Desperate families searched through the early morning hours for scores of missing Nicaraguans on the Caribbean coast where Hurricane Felix blew away villages and flooded rivers.

Some 150 Miskito Indians who were adrift on the ocean clinging to buoys, canoes and slabs of wood were rescued by authorities, said Honduran federal Congresswoman Carolina Echeverria, who represents the northeastern province of Gracias a Dios, on the Nicaraguan border.

Nine of those rescued were in serious condition and were being attended by five Honduran doctors, Echeverria said.

"We believe there are many others out there floating on the sea," she said.

Far to the northwest, meanwhile, Henriette plowed into Mexico for the second time in two days, making landfall shortly before 9 p.m. EDT near the port city of Guaymas with top sustained winds of 75 mph. Seven deaths were reported from the Pacific storm, which hit Baja California on Tuesday.

On Wednesday night, Nicaraguan Civil Defense Department spokesman Alvaro Rivas said at least 60 people were missing: more than 50 in the Matagalpa province in the north and another 10 around hard-hit city of Puerto Cabezas.

Dodental orkaan Felix loopt op

(Novum/AP) - Het dodencijfer van de orkaan Felix langs de Miskito-kust van Honduras en Nicaragua is donderdag opgelopen tot 98. Overlevenden verklaarden dat zij niet op de hoogte waren van de komst van de orkaan en dat de meeste mannen op zee door de storm werden overvallen.

De orkaan geselde riffen en kleine eilandjes voor de kust, waar kreeftvissers in paalwoningen huizen. De achtergebleven vrouwen en kinderen probeerden in de overgebleven boten te ontkomen, waarvan er vele kapseisden.

Onder de doden waren 44 vissers van het eilandje Miskito Caye, die drijvend in zee werden gevonden. Op televisiebeelden was te zien dat de eilandjes voor de kust totaal waren verwoest; het enige wat was overgebleven waren de boomstronken waar ooit ruim honderd primitieve woningen op waren gebouwd.

In het gebied wonen ongeveer 150 duizend Miskito's, nazaten van indianen, Europese kolonisten en Afrikaanse slaven.

Ook landinwaarts waren de verwoestingen groot. Van de Zumo- en Mayagna-indianengemeenschap in Awastingi, 90 kilometer van Puerto Cabezas in de jungle, was volgens hulpverleners niets meer overgebleven.

Sara Isolina Alvarado zei dat de autoriteiten in Puerto Cabezas de bewoners veel te laat voor de orkaan hadden gewaarschuwd. "Wij hebben geen eten, water, kleren, niets. En wij hebben het koud."

Voedsel en brandstof waren donderdag schaars, zelfs nadat hulpgoederen waren gearriveerd in Puerto Cabezas, een stad die ook bij goed weer moeilijk te bereiken valt. Een AP-fotograaf die een afgelegen dorp in Nicaragua bereikte meldde dat het enig drinkbare daar de melk in gevallen kokosnoten was.

De Hondurese regering stelde boten en een legerhelikopter ter beschikking. Ook de Verenigde Staten, Venezuela en Cuba boden hulp aan.

PUERTO CABEZAS, Nicaragua — The death toll from Hurricane Felix neared 100 Thursday night as U.S., Honduran and Nicaraguan soldiers searched remote jungle beaches and the open sea for survivors and the dead. Villagers in canoes helped, paddling through waters thick with fallen trees.

Two days after the Category 5 storm hit, dozens more bodies were recovered along the Miskito coastline that stretches across the Nicaragua-Honduras border, many found floating in the sea, emergency officials said.

Abelino Cox, a spokesman for the Regional Emergency Committee, said the death toll from Felix had risen to at least 98. The previous toll was at least 65 dead.

The storm also destroyed the ethnic Zumo and Mayagna Indian community of Awastingni, located 55 miles northwest of Puerto Cabezas, Cox said. Fourteen people from there were missing.

"This is horrifying," said committee official Brooklin Rivera, who lives in the area.

Felix damaged or destroyed 8,000 houses in and around Puerto Cabezas and 18,000 Nicaraguans are living in shelters, civil defense officials said.

In Puerto Cabezas, about 500 people crowded onto a pier overlooking the beach where 13 bloated bodies had been laid out on black tarps after being pulled out of the sea. Some tried to rush down a small wooden stairway onto the beach but were held back by police.

GABRIELLE JUST ABOUT DONE WHILE THE REST OF THE TROPICS CONTINUE TO BE ACTIVE

Gabrielle is finally moving on towards an exit in to the Atlantic and it even appears that the Canadian Maritimes will not be bothered by the pesky 7th named storm. Winds are still gusting in to the 40s and 50s along portions of the exposed Outer Banks and there are some rain showers left over here and there. Otherwise, the storm is pretty much over and we can focus on the rest of the tropics- which are still very busy.

The NHC points out three distinct areas to watch in their latest tropical weather outlook. One is in the Gulf of Mexico and looks fairly tame righ now. The other is a small tropical wave just north and east of the Leeward Islands with very little convection associated with it. This may try to develop further this week but I am not seeing much to support that in the global models. The third and perhaps most interesting area is a large and well organized tropical wave deep in the eastern Atlantic The low level center is located around 10 north and 36 west. It has a large envelope of circulation in which to draw in vast amounts of moisture. While the global models don't really show much happening with this system, it just seems to have that look to it which suggests additional development. The global models have not done too well this season at predicting the birth of tropical storms- so we'll see. In any of these cases, I see nothing out there, besides our current Gabrielle, that will affect land within the next three days or so. We are in an active period in the hurricane season as the climatological peak is just about now. I will post updates often and keep on top of the latest developments in the tropics. So far, we have been very fortunate to have escaped any major problems from hurricanes this season. Hopefully that luck will continue- time will tell.
