Sneak Previews: Saturday, August 18th, 2001, select cities
MPAA Rating: (7/3/00) Nothing's official until the final cut is delivered to the MPAA, but R is likely. (7/22/01) Kevin Smith has mentioned on his official site that it did get an R. The official reasons should be announced by the MPAA soon. (8/5/01) And they are... "nonstop crude and sexual humor, pervasive strong language, and drug content."
Buy the Mallrats poster at AllPosters.com
Distributor: Dimension Films (Miramax; this is Smith's first film with Bob Weinstein's genre division, after two films with Miramax, and Dogma, which started at Miramax)
Production Company: View Askew Productions (Dogma, Chasing Amy, Mallrats, Clerks)
Cast Note: I've put some of the cast information in "spoiler space." Click and scroll over those spaces with caution.
Cast: Jason Mewes (Jay), Kevin Smith (Silent Bob), Joey Lauren Adams (Alyssa Jones), Ben Affleck (Holden McNeil, himself), Jules Asner (herself), Diedrich Bader (Miramax security guard), Jason Biggs (himself), Marc Blucas (Shaggy), George Carlin (hitchhiker), Wes Craven (himself), Matt Damon (himself), Morris Day and the Time, Shannen Doherty (herself), Eliza Dushku (Sissy), Shannon Elizabeth (Justice), Will Ferrell (Marshal Wilenholly), Carrie Fisher (Nun), Mark Hamill (Cock Knocker), Steve Kmetko (himself), Ali Larter (Chrissy), Jason Lee (Brodie Bruce, Banky Edwards), Tracy Morgan (Pumpkin Escobar), Alanis Morisette, Judd Nelson (Sheriff), Joe Quesada, Chris Rock (Chaka), Jon Stewart (Reg Hartner), James Van Der Beek (Chronic), Gus Van Sant (himself), Seann William Scott (Brent), Jeff Anderson (Randal Graves), Ever Carradine (Jay's mother), Dwight Ewell (Hooper X), Renee Humphrey (Trish "The Dish" Jones), Brian O'Halloran (Dante Hicks), Scott Mosier, Harley Smith (young Silent Bob), Jennifer Schwalbach Smith (Missy), an orangutang; see IMDb listing for more cast.
Cast Possibilities: On 6/24/00, News Askew posted a list of actors they predict will be in the film, based upon a list of initials supplied by Smith. In addition to some of the above, they are Marilyn Ghigliotti, Guinevere Turner, Bryan Johnson, and Walt Flanagan.
Cast Definitely Not Returning: Linda Fiorentino (Dogma), Claire Forlani (Mallrats), Salma Hayek (Dogma), Jeremy London (Mallrats) (note: the funny thing here is that News Askew once reported Shannen Doherty definitely wasn't returning...)
Director: Kevin Smith (Dogma, Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy; next up for him after this will be Fletch Won)
Screenwriter: Kevin Smith (Dogma, Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy; next up will be Fletch Won)
Based upon: This is to be the final live-action feature film set in Smith's "View Askewniverse," following Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, and Dogma. Note: if Kevin Smith's plans to make a feature film out of the remaining Clerks TV show happen, it may be most accurate to refer to this as the final live-action feature film.
Premise: Here's what Kevin Smith recently (7/1/00) said: "There's a dollop of poignancy, and an a**load of belly laughs. Expect no morals or lessons this time around, folks; we're in funny country now." (translate that as "more like Mallrats and less like Chasing Amy") Whatever it might be, expect this to be set at least partially in Red Bank, NJ. (10/25/00) NewsAskew has added that this is a "road movie." (10/31/00) Also, Randal and Dante from Clerks will serve as "bookends", opening and closing the film. (11/10/00) The road trip includes a stop in Kansas. (1/29/01) An image scooped at AICN reveals that part of the plot deals with a movie version of Bluntman and Chronic (with those roles played by Biggs and Van Der Beek). (3/12/01) The basic concept is that Jay and Silent Bob are on their way from Red Bank, New Jersey, to Hollywood to sabotage the B&C premiere. (3/19/01) The "monkey" is probably the same that appears in the Chasing Dogma comic book TPB (actually an orangutang). (5/14/01) The orangutang is being chased by a wildlife marshal (played by Will Ferrell). (8/5/01) Having seen the film, I can give a quick synopsis. When Jay and Silent Bob discover that Miramax is going to start filming of a Bluntman and Chronic movie in a few days, they decide to race across America to Hollywood to stop it from being made, because they're afraid it's going to ruin their good reputation (um, right...). Along the way, they become involved with a mysterious quartet of beautiful women, an escaped orangutang, and a national manhunt (for them)...
Filming: Production started on January 14th, 2001 on a budget of $15 million, Smith's largest yet. Most of the filming will take place in Los Angeles and the surrounding area, with just one week done in New Jersey. (4/19/01) Filming has wrapped.
Title Note: This project is also referred to as View Askew 5. Also, please note that although Kevin Smith did mention at one point that he was considering a Mallrats 2, and that Dogma mentions Clerks 2: Hardly Clerkin' in the closing credits, this project is neither of those (at least, not directly; there will be returning characters). Rather than being a sequel to any specific "View Askewniverse" film, this is the closing chapter of the entire quintet.

Greg's Preview Thoughts (2000) (7/3/00) Everything must eventually end, and so Kevin Smith is preparing to wrap up the series of movies with ties to Red Bank, NJ, commonly referred to as part of the "View Askewniverse." The third and fourth, Chasing Amy and Dogma, moved away from straight comedy and into romance and adventure, but this final film promises to go back to Smith's roots, though the details are sparse. What is known is that this movie will wrap up some loose ends, and definitively close the book, including featuring the last live-action appearances of the Jay & Silent Bob characters.
Filming is scheduled to start in a mere two or three months, so the news and details should start rolling onto the web, with the two official sites (linked to left) being your best daily sources. I try to keep up with most movies, but in a case like this, these sites are your one-stop best bets; no one covers View Askew like they themselves.
So, what's my anticipation level for this film like? Though I liked Chasing Amy and loved Dogma, I was lukewarm about Clerks and Mallrats. I've got no aversion to the films specifically; let's just say that I've seen both twice, and I am still not as avid as some. I laughed at Clerks more, but Mallrats was more consistent. My favorite of the series was Dogma, which impressed with its irreverent views on the church and what it means to be religious and devout. This movie won't be like Dogma, but what Chasing Amy and Dogma did accomplish was to introduce the characters to many more people, who can then go back and see Clerks and Mallrats, and finally, in May of 2001, see this film.
The May, 2001 release date is certainly interesting. That is the kickoff month of summer, and since this will be a raucous comedy, it seems Miramax is aiming to fill a niche like Road Trip did in 2000. Dogma did quite well, but I still think it could've done even better business at a different date, though the controversy was always going to be a fly in its ointment. This film shouldn't have many protests working against it (that I know of), so that shouldn't be a problem. Will this be one of the summer's big movies? That is impossible to guess 10 months early. Does it have a shot? Sure. Are millions of Kevin Smith fans anticipating it? Definitely. Expect more details soon.
(7/7/00) Smith has already finished his second draft, which is slimmed down to 110 pages from the 130 pages of the first draft. Dogma had a massive, hulking script, but this film clearly is slimmer and leaner. Does that mean it's less verbose? Not necessarily; much of what made Dogma so large was Smith's extra verbiage describing the action scenes, etc. Plus, it was indeed a 3 hour film before cuts, whereas most films see those extra scenes cut out in the script stage, which appears to be what Smith is doing here.
(8/6/00) Yesterday at Wizard World, Kevin Smith revealed the first list of confirmed cast. Here's the direct quote: "I'm sure he'll [Mewes] be in it. I'll be in it. That's all we need, really. [laughter] Jason Lee will be back. [Chris] Rock is coming back. Ivy [note: I don't know who he's referring to; do you?] is coming back. And Brian and Jeff [O'Halloran and Anderson; both from Clerks] are coming back." Kevin also mentioned that one of the "loose ends" that will be tied up is the ending of Chasing Amy, as well as storylines from the other three films. He didn't mention which characters each actor would be playing, although it's likely that Chris Rock would be playing "Rufus" from Dogma, and that Anderson and O'Halloran would be playing their Clerks characters. I'd guess Jason Lee will be playing "Banky" from Chasing Amy.
(8/7/00) This morning, as I listened to more of the tape I have of the Kevin Smith panel, he did say that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon would be returning for View Askew 5, later in the panel. Then, about 10 seconds later (seriously; it's funny how these things happen simultaneously), I got an e-mail that Kevin Smith had posted a reply to the news at his site. I then ran the tape through a different machine, and by fixing the volume to tone down the audience noise, I discovered that the "Ivy" that I first heard was in fact "Matty" (as in Damon). Weird. Regardless, both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are confirmed.
(8/20/00) Kevin Smith posted a note at his official site that filming is now scheduled to start in December (previously announced for either October or November).
(10/25/00) NewsAskew.com has posted some more little bits and pieces over the last few weeks. First of all, Jason Lee (Brodie and Banky) and Ben Affleck (Holden) are playing dual roles, though one of Affleck's is still a mystery. Next, this is a "road movie" with more filming to be done in Los Angeles than New Jersey. Also, there's a monkey.
(10/31/00) Lots more over at NewsAskew. First off, there will be new action figures for the Bluntman & Chronic characters from Chasing Amy, which will be tie-in's to this movie, so you can figure that they have something to do with it, somehow (not surprising considering that Ben Affleck and Jason Lee are reprising their CA roles). There's also a ton of casting news, including the word that Matt Damon will be playing a "character from a non-VA movie that Kevin was associated with." Well, an IMDb search brings up just one movie that matches that: Good Will Hunting, which Smith produced. It's also interesting to note that several of the actors who are "returning" are doing so as new characters (like Chris Rock and George Carlin).
(11/9/00) With Matt Damon likely to reprise his role as "Will Hunting", is it possible that one of the two "new" (to View Askew) characters that his pal Ben Affleck is playing could be his own Good Will Hunting character, Will's best friend?
(11/10/00) Well, the title is out: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. I had a hunch the title would include them, though I thought it might be something like Jay and Silent Bob Must Die (since we know this is the last "New Jersey Chronicles" movie...) The obvious allusion is to The Empire Strike Back, but I think it's a good bet that the joke is just a joke, and that we shouldn't be expecting to see Silent Bob say something like "Jay, I'm your father," or something like Silent Bob being frozen in carbonite, etc. The press release also included the news of a release date of August 10th, 2001, which confirms word that the release would be moved from May. That date is just before another similarly-titled film, Jason X, on the 17th.
(11/20/00) According to The Hollywood Reporter, Shannon Elizabeth is also in talks for a role. Kevin Smith wrote about meeting her at his PsyComic column recently.
(12/4/00) Kevin's column at PsyComic about the casting process continues to please. The latest entries hint that initial talks went well with Selma Blair and Charlie Sheen, though that doesn't mean they're technically "in talks" far enough to get listed in the cast ("in talks" as far as this site is concerned is generally when the agents are working their deals out, schedules and salaries are negotiated, etc). The latest entry focuses on someone who definitely won't be in this: Reese Witherspoon.
Also, the preview page for Clerks: Sell Out is now up.
(12/13/00) Judd Nelson has signed on, according to THR. (12/16/00) Dimension Films has announced a huge batch of new cast, including SNL stars Will Ferrell and Tracy Morgan, American Pie stars Jason Biggs and Seann William Scott (as well as confirming Shannon Elizabeth signed), and E! hosts Steve Kmetko and Jules Asner. A comparison was made to It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, which is interesting, since there's also a Mad World remake coming next summer: Rat Race.
Input about Upcomingmovies.com, or any movie covered here, is encouraged. Just e-mail Greg Dean Schmitz at greg@upcomingmovies.com. Please note that all release dates are subject to change.
Ending Note: The real ending of the movie comes after the credits... so don't leave early if you want to get your full moviegoing dollar's worth (though admittedly, that extra bit is only about 30 seconds long... it's still worth the stay).
Review (****) Kevin Smith's farewell to the characters that got him started, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, is a dense comedy (whereas Jay is just... dense), which is to say there are more jokes, more subtext, more visual gags and more to laugh at that than in any comedy I've seen in a long time. One could go back to Airplane! and Blazing Saddles to find comparisons.
Going in, I expected to laugh, but I thought much of it would be in a fanboyish "in joke" sort of way, and what Smith delivered, was the opposite. He introduces Jay and Silent Bob, literally from day one, and through a series of jokes makes it clear who they are. There are indeed references and appearances from Smith's first three films (and almost none from Dogma, except a few tiny things like Mooby's and Buddy Christ). I'd say the ratio is something like 30% Clerks, 15% Mallrats, and 55% Chasing Amy (since the plot is a sort-of-sequel to it). Being the final movie, fans might expect "endings" for the characters of those others, but they're mostly just here to benefit this film (although the justice Randall and Dante *finally* mete out in the first few minutes got many laughs; I think it's funny even if you didn't see Clerks though).
Something very important to mention at this point is that the "View Askewniverse" jokes are nearly outnumbered by the references to... just about anything else in "fandom." Smith even had the foresight to parody one of the big Summer 2002 releases a year ahead of time (telling you which may spoil the surprise). These references are often in a "Bizarro Universe" sort of way, with characters that sort of seem familiar, but then there's something... twisted. In a way, they're extensions of the ideas that could exist as only conversation in earlier Kevin Smith movies (having said, that J&SBSB is nearly absent of "Smith overgab"). Some scenes are so intense with multiple jokes going on at once (especially the sequence that pairs up both Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) that I can guarantee there will be a high level of repeat business. Add in the factor that even when there's just one "joke" going on, so many people are laughing that you miss things. Yes, there are "dick and fart" jokes, but Smith wisely keeps these unfashionably subtle, compared, at least to what we've seen this year in movies like Freddy Got Fingered and Dimension's Scary Movie 2. Even the jokes about the Internet, which I thought might be the ultimate inside joke, seemed to resonate.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, as funny as it is, works on its highest level because it achieves with this duo a sort of archetype, somewhere between Beavis & Butt-head and Laurel & Hardy, Bill & Ted and Abbott & Costello, etc. and etc. That's why this movie works for everyone. You don't need to have seen Clerks to understand what's funny about the dimwitted oversexed Jay and the slightly homoerotic bond he shares with Silent Bob, a classic case of underachiever who could... really do much better. Jason Mewes as Jay has never been better, rattling off his tough-guy machismo prattle with absolutely no clue about how out of touch he truly is. Overweight guys in comedy duo's aren't traditionally the straight men, but Smith's Bob counters Jay perfectly. There's a scene early on when Ben Affleck (as Holden from Chasing Amy) talks about the need in life to move on. It's cleverly written so that it's a metaphor, not just for Holden as the creator of Bluntman and Chronic, but for Silent Bob's relationship with Mewes, and most of all, Smith's creator relationship with Jay and Bob. Throw in a few cases of "breaking the fourth wall", which tease the audience for being in on the joke, and you've got a sharply written and performed comedic trek.
And trek they do. Without seeming like "sketch comedy", Jay and Silent Bob make their way across America meeting a variety of characters, but nothing (except maybe that summer 2002 movie joke) happens that doesn't further the story, or create a whole new subplot for the mix. Going back to that word "dense" (which I love here because it does have a double meaning), I found myself so caught up in the film's subplots that at one point, when they all seemed to be complete, I almost thought the film was over, and then you realize, hey, they didn't get to Hollywood yet. In other words, J&SBSB feels twice as long as it is in the best sort of way; by speeding along at such a furious comedic pace, you feel like you've seen nearly two movies in the time of one (Blazing Saddles did this as well, and curiously enough, both movies end similarly).
The cast, as you can tell by that list over to the right, is massive, and by the time Jay and Silent Bob get to H'wood, it all gets a bit dizzying. Watch out for "cameos" on the Miramax lot from characters from other films they released (like one directed by Quentin Tarantino, for example). In any comedy, not all of the jokes are going to work (the scene with Wes Craven and Shannen Doherty might've been funnier, oh, a year or two ago). The good news though is that there is so much going on, that Smith never dwells too long on any one thing. Watch out for the little touches, like the music that plays whenever Ali Larter, Eliza Dushku, and Mrs. Jennifer Schwalbach Smith are having an argument.
Comedy is the ugly stepchild of Hollywood, but the one whose dad also happens to be loaded. Even the best comedies have to fight tooth-and-nail to make critics' top ten list, something that can be accomplished much more easily by dramas (tear jerkers even more so). Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is one fine comedy that somehow not only treads, but pirouettes, the thin line between what appeal to a wide audience, and what appeals to Smith's many fans. There are going to be prudes who don't appreciate Jay's crudeness, but the joke is that he's no one's role model. I mean, he's a guy who goes around beating up little kids, and is most comfortable leaning up against a wall, selling pot and talking sh*t. The joke is that most of us, somewhere down the road, have known guys like Jay (though maybe not Silent Bob... he's more of an enigma). By parodying a stereotype of machismo-driven loud-talking American idiots like Jay through his first five movies, and then showcasing them here, Smith has done more to criticize the behavior than it might have seemed he was glorifying it on first glance (like, say, in Mallrats).
Summing up, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back finds Smith leaping to a whole new level of comedy, overcoming whatever rough edges of filmmaking he previously had, and giving us a comedy inspired by Mallrats, but with the intelligence of say, Chasing Amy or Dogma (but without having to, say, exactly duplicate either). Ending a long, varied series of misadventures, Smith ends it all at a most unexpected event. Given that this is the "final Jay and Silent Bob" movie, I was expecing any number of things... a funeral made for two, a wedding, maybe prison. Instead, Smith sends us off with good times and joy, reminding us that movies are supposed to, most of the time, be entertaining and fun. What an original idea.
P.S. Did I mention that this is the "funniest comedy of the year." Or "Jay and Silent Bob Strike... Comedy Gold!"?
P.S.S. (8/6/01) Thankfully, I don't have to end with the quote whoring. This is just a note to say that the print that I saw was missing the final credits, and so, actually... what I saw as the "ending" wasn't actually the ending. It appears Smith is holding out on that until 8/22, probably just so the ending won't be leaked to the Internet. Ahem. I've got an idea of what it might be (perhaps the most divine female character in Dogma?) but I'm going to have to wait until 8/24 like everyone else.
("Preview Thoughts" note; given the length of this page, I pushed the old 2000 thoughts over to the left column; the 2001 thoughts continue...)
Greg's Preview Thoughts (2001) (1/13/01) Universal has penciled American Pie 2 for August 10th, which is a definite showdown. The question now is... will Miramax flinch and move this elsewhen? Also, NewsAskew confirms that Joey Lauren Adams has signed on. They've also set up their Scooping the Monkey site to be a one-stop source. Finally, if you're going to be in Los Angeles on January 25th from 10AM-10PM and want to try out to be an extra, call 818-503-7474.
(1/25/01) E! reported last week that Eliza Dushku (Bring It On) is also among the many costars.
(1/28/01) Images recently scooped by AICN reveal that Jason Biggs and James Van Der Beek play "Bluntman and Chronic" in a movie-within-the-movie. (2/14/01) Empire Online reports that Mark Hamill has a humorous cameo, engaging in a light sabre duel with the boys.
(3/19/01) Ali Larter (Final Destination) and Diedrich Bader (The Drew Carey Show) also have roles.
(3/22/01) Kevin Smith has revealed that he has gotten permission for a Marvel superhero to have a cameo in the film. Who? All he will say is that it's a "vigilante close to my heart", but it doesn't take much to figure out he means Daredevil, a character he wrote a popular mini-series for a few years back.
(3/28/01) Over at VA, Smith has revealed two more cameos, Carrie Fisher and Shannon Doherty, and alluded to a "quartet of folks" and a "good egg", but on those cameos, he's staying mum.
(3/31/01) Corona reports (by way of Wizard) that Marvel editor Joe Quesada has a small speaking role as well. Finally, thinking back to the quartet Smith mentioned, how about this scenario? We already know that Judd Nelson has a role in the film. What if, like the importing of the orangutang from Chasing Dogma, Smith borrowed another sequence, which was when Jay and Silent Bob seek out the fictional Shermer, IL, the setting of John Hughes' teen movies, like The Breakfast Club. In the comic, the duo runs into Andy (Emilio Estevez) and Brian (Anthony Michael Hall). Throw in Nelson and either Ally Sheedy or Molly Ringwald, and you'd have a familiar quartet from The Breakfast Club. That's, however, just a guess.
(4/12/01) Carrie Fisher told Popcorn recently that her cameo is as a nun, with whom the duo gets into something... naughty.
(5/2/01) The whole month of August is crowded, but the first two weeks are especially crammed, so it's not much of a surprise that Dimension has moved this back a bit to the 24th (where its steepest competition is the newest John Carpenter movie). Smith broke the news over at his official site, where he singled out Rush Hour 2 as being the juggernaut they are most trying to avoid.
(5/9/01) The Internet-only teaser trailer is now online at MoviePoopShoot.com, a site set up by View Askew as a parody of sites like AICN. It's worth noting that VA's servers are obviously straining under the weight of their fans. If you can't get in, try later, like the very early morning.
(6/3/01) The names just keep adding up... director Wes Craven, for whom Mewes and Smith did that Scream 3 cameo, will have a cameo.
(6/23/01) The second trailer is now online at the official site.
(7/4/01) Although the first two trailers have been online for a while, the theatrical trailer first debuted this week, attached to Scary Movie 2. (7/13/01) Miramax has adjusted this slightly, moving it to Wednesday, August 22nd. (7/15/01) I just thought I'd add a little more thought here on that move. Something that happened recently, which I didn't make note of here, is that Touchstone (Disney) moved Bubble Boy to 8/24, which seems to me to be a strange way of showing "synergy" for their Miramax/Dimension brethren, since both BB and J&SBSB are "whacked out comedies" (my lingo, if no one else's). So, faced with this "friendly fire" release date challenge, that may be what led Dimension to change the date to 8/22. Besides, it gives them an extra two days before Labor Day and the average box office slides.
(7/30/01) The theatrical trailer has been online in various forms for a few weeks now, but it's finally been added to Apple.com in Quicktime.
(8/1/01) Let me join the parade of left-leaning writers and Kevin Smith fans, and as anyone who reads this site knows, as a supporter of gay rights (I've gotten flack for including a Gay genre), to say that the recent G.L.A.A.D. hubbub about this film, is more than likely (I haven't seen the movie, admittedly) ill-judged. I'm going to refer you to a lengthy and well-written post by Kevin Smith on this issue, but as the man says, the "buddy relationship" between Jay and Silent Bob has always had a slight homoerotic tinge. Yes, Jay uses words like "fag" frequently, but the joke is that it is often males who express the most distaste (ahem) for homosexuals who are actually themselves, gay. If J&SBSB gives the world another comedic example of this paradox which I do believe exists in many closeted men, then all the more power to Smith. G.L.A.A.D should be supporting this, not damning it.
(8/5/01) Having seen the film, I can now back up that opinion, by saying that I haven't changed it one bit. Smith makes it pretty clear that Jay is a complete idiot. Complaining about Jay is a bit like complaining that the rednecks in Deliverance were also homophobic (in other words, it's a case of "missing the forest for the trees").
(8/12/01) This past week, Kevin Smith revealed over at VA that the release has been moved two days to the 24th, with no reason given. It's interesting that Smith and crew will still be doing a great deal of publicity on the 22nd (since all that "stuff" had to be booked ahead of time), but it's not at all unusual for stars to plug a movie two days early.
uit een recent interview
CNN: There's buzz around town that you worked on the Internet short "The Phantom Edit," the reworking of "The Phantom Menace" movie by "Star Wars" fans. True?
Smith: Do you think that I have that much free time to sit around and re-edit George Lucas' movie? I'm busy editing my movie and doing a poor job at it. Why would I take a shot at his flick? I'd like to think that I have better things to do with my time than sit around and re-edit old movies.
If I was going to re-edit a movie, I don't think I'd choose "The Phantom Menace." I'd probably go for something like "The Wizard of Oz." That's too long and the black-and-white stuff doesn't work. I'd just get to the flying monkeys.
...It would basically be three minutes long with just the flying monkeys, because that's kind of what the movie is really about.

Kevin Smith is geweldig!

Geweldige deleted scenes hoor!
