met alle negativiteit op de officiële sellaband forums ben ik wel benieuwd hoe de leden hier er tegenaan kijken... ikzelf ben er nog van overtuig dat het nog moet groeien en dat 2008 bepalend gaat zijn, maar dat er voornamelijk wat reclame tegenaan gegooid moet worden om het werkelijk succesvol te krijgen.
het feit dat een believer zoals Isca vertrekt is daarentegen een minder goed teken...

Australian rock band Vegas Dragons have secured a worldwide release for their album "Lovingly Cruel".

The production of the album was funded by music fans around the globe, though a website called SellaBand.

Vegas Dragons are the world's first Heavy Metal Band to have their album funded by their fans. The five piece band, led by Sydney based vocalist Brian Taylor, raised $50,000 which enabled them to record "Lovingly Cruel".

To show his love and dedication to his fans and SellaBand, Taylor had the logo of the website tattooed on his left arm.

"Lovingly Cruel" contains 11 hard rocking tracks and is released today. Brian Taylor is currently in Europe to promote the release of his album.

Ha, een topic over sellaband!

Vond het album van Julia Marcell wat tegenvallen, had eigenlijk beter verwacht. Heb momenteel op recording staan: BPM, Kaitee Page, Ellie Williams en Electric Eel Shock. Vooral de laatste verwacht ik een mooie CD van.

Wat betreft gezeur op de officiele SAB forums, ik vind het persoonlijk erg jammer dat sommige mensen echt puur voor de winst die ze zouden kunnen maken parts van een artist kopen. Ik zelf koop er een paar, en heb voor een normaal winkelbedrag (of als je maar 1 of 2 parts koopt zelfs nog minder) een CD thuis van een artiest waar ik in geloof.

Winst maken? Kan mij het schelen, voor een habbekrats heb je 'n CD en je helpt een beginnend artiest! Okay, ik zou het niet erg vinden als ik winst zou maken, natuurlijk niet, maar reken er maar niet op.

SellaBand viert tweede verjaardag met eigen Festival


Online muziekplatform verwelkomt 23e artiest met $50,000


Op vrijdag 15 augustus organiseert muziekbedrijf SellaBand haar eerste festival: SellaBration '08. Op de twee podia van de Amsterdamse poptempel Paradiso zullen deze avond liefst tien verschillende acts uit negen verschillende landen te zien zijn. In samenwerking met Heineken Nederland, I Amsterdam en AOL Europe viert SellaBand deze avond tevens het tweejarig bestaan van haar online platform.


"One Night, Two Stages, Ten Bands, Four Continents" is het thema van deze avond. Speciale gast is de Japanse rockband Electric Eel Shock, alweer de 23e act die de magische grens van $50,000 op SellaBand heeft behaald en dat in een tijdsbestek van 50 dagen. EES heeft dan ook al een stevig muzikaal verleden, maar heeft bewust de traditionele muziekindustrie de rug toegekeerd en gekozen voor een toekomst met SellaBand.


De line-up bestaat verder uit vijf Europese artiesten die allemaal al de benodigde $50,000 via hun fans hebben ingezameld om samen met SellaBand een CD op te nemen. Francis Rodino (UK), T-ka (Frankrijk), Julia Marcell (Polen), SolidTube (Oostenrijk) en Confused5 (Oostenrijk) komen speciaal naar Amsterdam om hun SellaBand CD's live te presenteren. Voor de Nederlandse inbreng zorgt de Haagse formatie So What, die eerder dit jaar hun $50,000 binnen haalden. Maitreya (Nieuw Zeeland) en Mysti Mayhem (Verenigde Staten) vertegenwoordigen de andere continenten.


De tiende plek in de line-up van SellaBration is gereserveerd voor een artiest die wordt uitverkozen door de internationale community van SellaBand. Zegt algemeen directeur Johan Vosmeijer van SellaBand: "Best ambitieus, zo'n eigen festival en het belooft dan ook een spannende avond te worden. Maar het is ook een verjaardagsfeestje en tevens een dank je wel aan onze community die zich het hele jaar zo fanatiek inzet voor SellaBand."


Kaarten voor SellaBration kosten ¤10,00 en zijn te koop via Paradiso en het complete festival zal tevens live op internet te volgen zijn via www.fabchannel.com.

vanavond cd presentatie van Confused 5. cd-releases beginnen aardig op stoom te raken nu.
zou toch fijn zijn als de verkopen het ook een beetje zouden weerspiegelen, maar tot nog toe gaan eigenlijk alleen Nemesea en Second Person echt goed geloof ik.

Wie gaan er trouwens nog meer naar Sellabration?

Maar gezien de verkoop van Limited Editions enzo (veel 50k artiesten zitten nu over de helft van het aantal verkochte LE's) verwacht ik wel binnenkort wat meer winst te maken. Zeker als je ziet welke partnerships erbij komen en hoe vaak Sellaband in het nieuws komt. Het begint nu pas op stoom te komen.

Te laat natuurlijk voor alle artiesten die al een album uit hebben gebracht, niet?

O nee hoor, als je ziet hoe goed Second Person het doet in Engeland bijvoorbeeld (ze hebben net de soundtrack van een aankomende engelse film gemaakt en zijn bezig met de voorbereiding voor de 2e cd) of Julia Marcell uit Polen die ook op de luisterpaal van 3voor12 heeft gestaan laatst. ze lopen niet allemaal gruwelijk hard maar van de 10 50k artiesten die ik heb gesponsord zijn er toch 3 die het behoorlijk goed doen, alleen de cd verkoop zelf valt wat tegen.... je ziet dat er meer gedownload wordt dan dat er fysieke media verkocht worden en daar komen niet echt grote opbrengsten vandaan.

Winst? Voor 10 dollar heb je 'n CD, doe dat maar eens in de free record shop! Pure winst man!

Als je meer dan 1 a 2 parts koopt denk ik niet dat je dat moet doen met de intentie winst te maken. Wel als je een artiest echt wilt helpen natuurlijk!

Sellabration was erg geslaagd, Maitreya geskipt om de trein te gaan halen maar de rest was erg goed. M.u.v. Confused5 die net zo zoutloos optreden als dat ze op cd doen. Hulde voor de rest (uitschieters waren toch wel Mysti Mayhem en EES voor mij)

Zal nog wel komen, die info deden ze de afgelopen 2 maanden 1x per maand maar meen gelezen te hebben dat het verzamelen van deze data binnekort sneller gaat en dat ze het dan semi-realtime weer kunnen geven.

Sellaband the new 'era'

SellaBand artists playing the largest and most prestigious arenas of North America. Could it really be possible? I think this is the single question that fascinated me the most in the past six months or so. I know now the answer is 100% affirmative, but let's cue back some seven months ago, when we received an e-mail at info@sellaband.com that said: "Would SellaBand like to be involved in a major new music program that is about to be launched within many of the largest most prestigious arenas in the United States? The opportunity we can provide will attract approximately 1 million music fans in the first year."

My initial reaction was: Yeah, right... The e-mail also stated that is was "not a spam e-mail." Fortunately, Dagmar was a little less cynical about this e-mail than I was and he got in touch straight away. Cue 7 months and many, many meetings and brain storm sessions later, and SellaBand can now claim to be the exclusive partner to provide a total of 180 performance slots at major arenas in North America, in the Summer of 2009. 'Our' bands will get to tour the US, will get to play at 20,000 capacity venues, as part of a revolutionary concept: ArenaFest, the first ever live social network. It involves professional sports, gaming, contests and music. 90 Different events that will each have a well-known headlining act every night, as well as two SellaBand artists filling the opening slots. Hard to believe, right... But it's all 100% true... In fact we have just hired a Tour Director, who will be in control of the scheduling of the event, the logistics and hiring tour managers, stage hands, etc.

The invitation to participate in ArenaFest arrived at a time when we were doing the first preparation for SellaBration '08 and Dagmar and I realised once more that adding the live element to the SellaBand concept on a more permanent basis would be not just the icing on the cake, but a redefinition for unsigned bands trying to translate their online presence back into the 'real world'. If only we could offer this live platform on a more permanent basis.

SellaBration '08 came and went and during this period, our negotiations with the company behind ArenaFest were underway. Very inspiring brain storm sessions and conversations, but also a bit confrontational at times. SellaBand is going to be part of the huge marketing campaign, surrounding ArenaFest. What is going to be our single most important message? SellaBand has the right to have kiosks at every Arena, to promote the concept and sell the music. Do we have the people to man these concessions?

We thought hard about it, but only for a few seconds. What an amazing opportunity. Not only for bands to play these arenas, but also for SellaBand, to market the concept and put the company on the map, Stateside. The ambition to reach hundreds of thousands of music lovers suddenly became more realistic, as well as the opportunity to come a bit closer to the essence of the original SellaBand concept. The challenge to make it happen was daunting, but at the same time it made us realize that now was the time to implement the changes we had in mind for quite some time, already.

Our participation in ArenaFest is not a 'one off'. What will be rolled out in the Summer of 2009, is only the beginning. SellaBand will also be part of this very exciting new platform for unsigned bands, in years to come. And there may be other, like minded initiatives, where other SellaBand artists can have a shot a showing their live skills to a big audience. The Arena people are incredibly impressed with what SellaBand has achieved in its first couple of years. The concept, the team, the community, and let's not forget the music. 29 Recording artists already. Some of them can expect an invitation to be part of ArenaFest any time, soon.

Last week it all became even more 'real'. When the web team showed us the designs and flow for ArenaFest, and when I traveled to New York to conduct a number of interviews. All embargoed until December 1, of course. One media representative put it as follows: "With adding something as big as ArenaFest, SellaBand is actually redefining what is success for unsigned bands." He hit the nail on the head. As of now, SellaBand not only offers a platform for funding your music, recording a professional album and distributing your recorded music, we have added another crucial element: get out there and play. And not just in clubs and bars, but at major arenas across the United States. SellaBand artists playing the largest and most prestigious arenas of North America. Who would have thought...

Nouja, we zitten ook op myspace, hyves, reverbnation, etc etc etc, en als ik alles up2date moet houden dan zou ik dat bijna als 2e baan doen. En ik heb zelf geen idee hoe ik uberhauot sellaband zou moeten promoten, aangezien 99% van de mensen tegenwoordig te gierig is om ook maar iets van muziek aan te schaffen.

Afgelopen maandag in de nieuwsbrief stond de artist-welcome-kit... doe er je voordeel mee.
Maar als je geen moeite in je sellaband profiel wil steken kun je het net zo goed verwijderen natuurlijk...

As a new Artist on this site you must be filled with questions like: What do I do first? How do I get new fans? How do I convince fans to believe in my journey to 50k? Well don’t worry, you are not alone, and these are very common questions.

Let’s start with the most basic question: “What is SellaBand”. Primarily this site is all about musicians interacting with fans. You are a musician; your fans are what drive you. Your fans are what make you successful. And here, like nowhere else, your fans can help you get your career underway. In other words, you can’t let the money aspect of the site intimidate you. Instead all you need to do is focus on your fans, focus on bringing your music to as many people as you can, and the money aspect will start to take care of itself.

Ok, that was the easy part, now how do you start building that fan base? Well there are many, many things you can do, so why don’t we break it down into blocks and prioritize. First, let’s go over what things you can do immediately after getting signed up.

1. Try to get three songs up as soon as possible along with pictures and information. If you leave out your info, or only post one song, the potential believers aren’t going to feel like they know you well enough to invest in your career. Posting just a link to your external website is not enough either. People want to know that you are serious about your music, and creating a complete profile page is the first thing they will notice.

2. Bring your first believers with you. If making music is your dream, then don’t be afraid to ask your friends and family to help you get started by becoming your first believers. When people who know you show that they believe in your music then it makes it much easier for total strangers to also believe in you.

3. Believe in yourself. You can also create a believer account and invest in yourself. Nobody expects you to have a lot of money, but $10 or $20 when you can afford it tells people that you are serious about reaching 50k and making that CD. You will also get an increased share in your own profits this way.

4. Don’t forget your fans from your live shows. If you perform live shows, tell those fans that you are trying to raise enough money to make a professional CD. Some of them may be willing to become believers and help you reach that goal.

5. Web friends can believe too. If you have your own website or a MySpace page, put your SellaBand profile link on there. That way, anyone who hears your music and likes it, knows where they can go in order to invest in your career.

Great that should get you started! See…it isn’t so tough to get going. Now you’ve got a complete profile, you have a little bit of a fan-base ready to support you. Now how do you start moving up the charts? How do you get NEW potential fans to listen to your music? How do SellaBand believers expect you to interact with them? Again there are many different ways to do this, so let’s go over some of them.

6. Let people know you are here. Check out some of the other bands on the site, especially ones who make music comparable to yours. Give them feedback the way you would want them to do for you. Make note of who their believers are and visit the profiles of those believers. Some believers like you to contact them directly, some don't. Check their profile when in doubt. If they welcome messages, give them an invitation to hear your music.

7. Always use the public “post comment” unless you really have something private to say. The public viewable comments will get your name in front of everyone who visits that profile. It is free advertising for you. In addition, most people on the site only want private messages to be from other community members they already know. Getting private messages that say “I’m new listen to me” may turn off many potential fans.

8. Observe other artists on the site, and learn from them about what works and what doesn't. Some do promotions or autograph things for their fans. Others schedule live shows with fellow SAB artists. These other artists are in it for the same reasons you are, and even if you never make a single dollar, these connections with other musicians could change the way you see your life.

9. If possible rotate in new songs when you can. Keep your page fresh and interesting and people will come back. Fans love new music from their favourite artists. Even if you can’t afford professional recordings, the fans will still like to hear from you.

10.If you have a video camera, give making videos a try. It gives fans a way to feel closer to you, which will strengthen their belief in you. Check out some other great video makers for tips: Second Person, Mysti Mayhem, etc.

Ik vind het zwaar zuigen op z'n zachtst gezegd... heb er al tijden geen geld meer ingestoken en zie wel waar het heen gaat nu. Ze zullen er zwaar aan moeten werken om alles weer op de rit te krijgen want het afgelopen jaar heeft hun imago niet veel goed gedaan.
Eerst dat Arenafest wat niet doorging om duistere redenen, vervolgens die brakke website etc etc.
We zien wel waar het heengaat.

Dat is wel even wat anders ja. 25 dollar per 'believer' tot een maximum van 250.000.
Dat zou ik nooit doen. Zelfs als ik de artiest echt goed vond zou ik geen 25 dollar inleggen voor een album dat als die klaar is voor ca 15 te koop zal zijn.

Met de huidige dollarkoers valt dat natuurlijk wel mee, 25 Dollar komt neer op 17 euro en dat is dan weer aardig richting de retailprijs hier.
Het mooie is nu dat artiesten vrij worden gelaten in het budget en de waarde van de 'aandelen' die je koopt. Die Chris Jones bijv. gaat voor 60.000 met de standaard 10 dollar parts.
Ben vooral benieuwd hoe het uiteindelijk gaat werken.

Ik ben ook benieuwd, maar het moet wel leuk blijven.
Tuurlijk zitten er ook mensen voor het gokken of het verdienen, die kopen 50 of meer delen van een artiest waar ze het in zien zitten en als het te lang duurt schuiven ze die misschien zo door naar een ander. Die krijgen dan ook 50 cd's thuisgestuurd als zo'n artiest wint, misschien hebben ze dan zelf wel een webshop ofzo waar ze die weer verkopen.
Maar dat is niet waar het mij om gaat. Ik hoop gewoon een artiest te kunnen steunen die ik goed vind om een album op te nemen.
