EA invests in development studio for Wii
It has been announced today by Electronic Arts that they have acquired developer Headgate Studios. For those of you that may remember, Electronic Arts have previously teamed up with the developer to work on the Tiger Woods and Madden franchises since 2000.
Now renamed EA Salt Lake, the developer has been given the job to exclusively develop software for the Nintendo Wii. "Having worked with EA for the past six years, we know their teams share work ethic, passion for creative excellence and commitment to quality," Vance Cook, founder of Headgate and now newly appointed Executive Producer of EA Salt Lake stated. "By joining EA, we are making official what we all already feel – that we are part of the EA family."
Paul Lee, President of EA Studios also shared his thoughts on the acquisition. "Salt Lake City is a terrific place to make games," He said. "It's a dynamic city with a vibrant creative community and a great quality of life. We are thrilled to have them join EA."
This news follows last month's announcement from Buena Vista who opened a new studio developing software exclusively for Nintendo consoles. Things are certainly looking bright for Nintendo. On a side note, less than a week until Wii reaches PAL shores.

Over fifteen more Wii games are underway at Electronic Arts, each one custom designed for the quirky new console.
Probably because it can rather than necessarily should at this stage, EA is giving Nintendo Wii huge support over the next 12-18 months. Speaking to Newsweek, EA’s CEO Larry Probst has promised “five or six” new Wii games before the end of March 2007, and a further “low to mid-teens” throughout 2007-2008. “You're going to see us be more prolific on Nintendo's platform than we have been in the past,” says Probst.
Among familiar brands that include Harry Potter, SSX, Need for Speed, and The Godfather, the all-seeing EA CEO also promises “Wii-specific” games – Wii Sims (http://boku-sim.jp), mentioned in our news on Tuesday, will be one of the first.
In closing, Probst is asked what he is most looking forward to from other publishers. “I think it's always interesting to watch Nintendo. They consistently do things that are unique, innovative, unexpected. It'll be fun to watch what they have in the pipeline for Wii and for DS.”

RUMOR: A Wii surprise coming?
Speaking with a friend of mine from Germany, who works for a very legitimate gaming production and publication, I can confirm that Nintendo truly does have something under their sleeves in the next few months. Of course, I can’t say more than that at the current moment, but now you’re glad that you checked the site other the weekend right? The secret lies within the Wii’s interface, most notably the channels. Something just might surprise you how far Nintendo can go in actually changing the infrastructure of their next-gen console.
Remember IGN’s interview with NOA’s Perrin Kaplan?
IGN: “Do we have any more surprises on the way before launch?”
Kaplan: “We do have a couple of other surprises. You know probably not as big as what you got today, but more details on a couple of different things that I think people… I think your folks will be very pleased about.”
These secrets are contained in upcoming channels to surface eventually - ones that haven’t been announced. Nintendo’s playing a waiting game on when to reveal this, but I cannot confirm anything other than that. Stay tuned on these developments.
In other developments, you might want to keep an eye on your Wii’s WiiConnect24 service leading up to this Christmas. Nintendo’s sending a nifty gift… a surprise.
