U2 3D is heading for cinemas later this year – and a preview airs in US cinemas this week.

The feature length film, shot during U2’s visit to South America on the Vertigo Tour, is directed by Catherine Owens, with additional direction from Mark Pellington. The movie will arrive in specialist 3D cinemas in the autumn and a trailer has just begun airing alongside the only other 3D film to come out this year, Disney’s ‘Meet The Robinsons’.

Owens, longtime collaborator with U2 on live-show visuals, says 'this was the ultimate challenge in presenting U2’. But the results, she predicts, will startle audiences.

'There is no comparison with a traditional concert film seen in 2D. One minute you are on stage with the band and the next you are at the back of the stadium. 'The best way I can describe it for the viewer,' she adds, 'Is that it's like being on the wings of a bird flying around the concert stadium - it's really something else.'

As the web is not yet in 3D, our 30-second clip has one dimension less – that’s plain old 2D.

The 3D shoot took place over seven shows in Mexico, Brazil, Chile and Argentina in February last year and the film is being produced by 3ality Digital in Los Angeles, edited by Olivier Wicki with music produced by Carl Glanville, who has a long list of U2 production credits. Director of 3D photography was Peter Anderson and the Director of photography was Tom Krueger.

Na de strips, de film en de videogame komt er binnenkort een heuse Spiderman-musical. In eerste instantie klinkt dat niet echt heel interessant, ware het niet dat de muziek zal worden geschreven door de heren van U2.

Samen met regisseur Julie Taymor zullen zanger Bono en gitarist The Edge de nummers voor de musical gaan componeren. Alles is al in zo'n vergevorderd stadium dat de eerste repetities al op 2 juli gaan beginnen. Op dit moment is men druk op zoek naar een geschikte hoofdrolspeler.

En er is nog meer muzikaal Spiderman-nieuws: over een maandje verschijnt de soundtrack van alweer de derde film rondom de actieheld. De soundtrack van die film zal nieuwe nummers bevatten van onder andere Snow Patrol, The Killers, The Flaming Lips en de Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

The favourite guitar of U2's The Edge has been sold at an auction that raised about $2.4m (£1.2m) for a charity set up in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
The Gibson Les Paul used on every U2 tour since 1985 sold for $240,000 (£120,000), while one owned by Jimi Hendrix fetched $400,000 (£200,000).

Other items of U2 memorabilia included a pair of singer Bono's sunglasses.

The Edge co-founded Music Rising, a charity to replace instruments lost or destroyed in Hurricane Katrina.

Julien's Auctions, who organised the Icons of Music sale at New York's Hard Rock Cafe, said it included the largest selection of U2 memorabilia ever made available to collectors.

An autographed guitar belonging to Bono sold for $180,000 ($90,000), a bass guitar donated by Adam Clayton for $22,000 (£11,000), and Larry Mullen Jr's tom-tom drum fetched $19,000 (£9,500).

The Edge donated other items including a 1958 Gibson archtop guitar, that sold for $105,000 (£52,500), and clothing accessories such as a signature knitted hat which earned $11,000 (£5,500).

"I have to say that it is a strange feeling to see some of your stuff up here," the 45-year-old guitarist told Reuters news agency.

A saxophone signed by former US President Bill Clinton fetched $54,000 (£27,000), while $30,000 (£15,000) was paid for a pair of John Lennon's round, blue-tinted sunglasses.

The Edge, real name David Evans, created Music Rising in 2005 with record producer Bob Ezrin and Henry Juszkiewicz, chairman of guitar-makers Gibson.

"One of the good things about globalization is it has created a single international music community, and I feel very much part of it," he has said.

"So this doesn't seem like it's someone else's problem. It's really our problem too."

He said jazz from New Orleans "was the forerunner of everything".

"You mix jazz with European rhythms, and that's rock 'n' roll really. You can make the argument that it all started on the streets of New Orleans with the jazz funerals."

Hurricane Katrina hit the southern US in August 2005, causing flooding in the Louisiana city of New Orleans that killed some 1,300 people.

The population of New Orleans fell from nearly 500,000 to less than 200,000 in the wake of the disaster.
