Sam and Max krijgt een 9 op Eurogamer. Please Nintendo, geef ze licentierechten en een devkit .
They told me all of my cages were mental, so I got wasted like all my potential.

Advies?

Red Steel handson
quote:
I have spent significant time with Red Steel's single-player (well, two-ish levels) and I can say without reservation that... it's still a work in progress.

Red Steel is probably the most anticipated Wii launch game not made by Nintendo, and seeing as how it's all about shooting and sword swinging, it should, in theory, be perfect for the Wii controller. I'm not sure if it's the controller's fault of the game's fault, but it's not perfect just yet.

First, I should note that I jumped in somewhere midway through the game, without the benefit of a tutorial, manual, or gentle ramp-up in difficulty. But this thing is definitely not easy to just pick up and play. The enemy A.I. will take you out quick if you mess around, and that's perfectly fine. That's great. The problem is that I didn't feel like the Wii Remote aim was going where I wanted it to go all the time. At certain moments it zipped around from one side of the screen to another when I thought I was holding the remote pretty still.

An attending PR person thought a background light in the already pretty dark room might be messing with the Wii's sensor bar, which tracks the controller's movement. With the light off and the room totally dark, the aim problem was significantly improved. The aim still didn't feel as accurate as I expected, though.

The parry system may take a few tries to figure out, but when you pull off a proper deflection, you feel like a badass. Click the image above to check out all Red Steel screens.

The demo started off in an airplane hanger, with two enemies on a higher level, half-way behind cover. Switch from pistol to machine gun on the D-pad (which is kind of a stretch for my right thumb, but I guess that's where your right thumb is supposed to be), wiggle the Nunchuck to reload, tap A to toggle a down-the-sights view, etc. As long as you don't have the pistol equipped, you can thrust the Wii Remote forward to zoom your aim and pick off the dudes. Like Halo's shield, your health in Red Steel regenerates if you can avoid fire for a few seconds, so gun combat is all about moving in and out of cover/safety.

Before exiting the hanger section, I grabbed some grenades; to chuck 'em you've got to hold down on the D-pad while flicking the Nunchuck back and forward for an overhand lob, down and back up to roll a grenade along the ground. Worked OK, but judging the throw distance takes some trial and error.

And then there was the sword fighting. Let me mention again that I had no idea what the controls were, aside from that swinging the Remote sometimes equated to an on-screen sword slash. The PR guy told me that sword combat is really based around parrying the other guy and then counterattacking, but neither of us could figure out how to parry reliably. Defense wasn't working, but randomly, fitfully swinging the remote on all-out offense, while not very elegant, got the job done. I know there's more to it. There has to be more to it.

Check out our new videos for footage of pretty much everything I got to play (including a new weapon, the sniper rifle). To be fair, the video was going out through an S-Video cable so it doesn't look as good as it possibly could (either on the TV or the clips), but to me the graphics were about on par with most GameCube games. There were some nice things going on with light streaming through windows and such, but also some effects (like the heat wave effect visible in the first sword battle) that were a bit underwhelming. I've got hope for Red Steel, but launch is coming up soon and it does need some significant layers of polish still.
