(CNN) -- A Delta commuter flight -- en route from Lexington, Kentucky, to Atlanta, Georgia -- crashed just after take-off from Blue Grass Airport on Sunday, and airlines and airport officials reported "multiple fatalities."
Federal Aviation Administration officials said Delta Flight 5191 -- which was operated by Delta's commuter carrier, Comair -- crashed around 7 a.m. ET in a wooded area about a mile from the Lexington airport on its way to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
At least 50 people were aboard the flight and it is not known if anyone survived, the officials said.
Delta Flight 5191 was scheduled to land at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport at 7:18 a.m.
The aircraft was a Bombardier Canadian Regional Jet (CRJ) 100, FAA officials said.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. There were no reports of bad weather in the Lexington area.

The Bombardier Canadian Regional Jet (CRJ)-200 was cleared to take off from runway 22, which is more than 7,000 feet long, the sources said.
Instead, it took off from runway 26, which is 3,500 feet long, the sources said.
That length is "pretty short for that type of aircraft," former National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bob Francis told CNN.
Lanter confirmed that the crash site was at the end of runway 26 but would not speculate from which runway the flight took off.
quote:The 3,500-foot-long strip, unlit and barely half the length of the airport's main runway, is not intended for commercial flights. The twin-engine CRJ-100 would have needed 5,000 feet to fully get off the ground, aviation experts said.
