Israel keeps Hizbullah bodies 'for bargaining chips'
Israeli soldiers carry the body of a killed Hizbullah fighter from their armoured personnel carrier after returning from fighting in Lebanon.
Israeli troops are storing the bodies of dead Hizbullah fighters in refrigerated containers for use in a possible prisoner swap, it emerged today.
The military, which admitted to the practice, would not say why it was keeping the bodies. But security officials told the Associated Press that Hizbullah corpses had been used as bargaining chips in a previous prisoner swap and they were being collected for the same reason now.
The army said six bodies of Hizbullah fighters had been taken back to Israel and were being held in refrigerators until Israel's political leaders decided what to do with them. Israel has special cemeteries for Palestinian and Lebanese militants killed in fighting with Israel. Under the Geneva conventions the burial of war dead "should be honourable, and, if possible, according to the rites of the religion to which the deceased belonged".
The quick burial of complete bodies is important in both the Jewish and Muslim faiths.

The UN pulls out of some areas of the world because of threats but leaves its UN observer forces in the middle of a war zone. It seems to me that a prudent move would have been for the observers to have been pulled out immediately upon the initiation of hostilities.
The observers are in towers and bunkers and Hezbollah is using these for cover to fire its rockets. The UN left them there as cannon fodder and ground cover.
UN “observers” have no place in a war zone. They will end up as collateral damage or collateral assistance at some point in a war. This is either cluelessness, incompetency, or intentional. Sh** happens in a war zone and the fact that the UN left their “troops” there is a hat trick of inept proportions.
Note to UN: This is your fault - not Israel’s and not Hezbollah’s.

This is indeed a risk — because UNIFIL has long permitted Hezbollah to locate its forces, including its missile batteries, in the very shadow of installations belonging to the “peacekeepers.” UNIFIL has thus turned into a very convenient and high-profile human shield for terrorists.
The U.N. force commander in Rwanda, Canadian Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire, remains haunted by the refusal of U.N. bureaucrats to let him intervene to prevent the 1994 genocide by seizing the arms that Hutu killers were stockpiling. Gen. Dallaire’s boss in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at the time was one Kofi A. Annan of Ghana, who argued that any such action would exceed the peacekeepers’ mandate. There is no evidence that the Dallaire’s UNIFIL counterparts have even attempted to fulfill their duty in South Lebanon. If we are friends of peace, we must prevent the U.N. from foiling it again.

AMSTERDAM - De Verenigde Staten hebben ervoor gezorgd dat de Veiligheidsraad van de Verenigde Naties geen verklaring heeft uitgebracht waarin het Israëlische bombardement op een VN-post in Libanon wordt veroordeeld. China had op een dergelijke verklaring aangedrongen. Een van de vier ongewapende vredesmilitairen die bij het bombardement de dood vonden was afkomstig uit China.
De Amerikanen hadden bezwaar tegen een paragraaf in de ontwerptekst, waarin werd gezegd dat de Veiligheidsraad iedere opzettelijke aanval op VN-personeel veroordeelt en benadrukt dat dergelijke aanvallen onaanvaardbaar zijn. Het Amerikaanse bezwaar gold zowel de veroordeling als de suggestie dat de aanval op de VN'ers een doelbewuste aanval was, zeiden welingelichte bronnen.
In de ontwerptekst werd gerefereerd aan de beschuldigende woorden waarmee secretaris-generaal Kofi Annan dinsdagavond reageerde op de schokkende gebeurtenis. Annan zei dat het erop leek dat de VN-post in Khiyam moedwillig door Israël onder vuur was genomen. Israël heeft de beschuldiging met grote stelligheid van de hand gewezen.

Sterker nog, er is een VN resolutie aangenomen waarin staat dat Hizbollah ontwapend moet worden.
Maar ja, als de libanese legermacht niet in staat is om dit te doen, dan moet Israel er bij te pas komen.
