quote:Little stars - Heerenveen pack powerful punchAug 8 2006
By Philip Tallentire, Evening Gazette
Few Dutch sides have punched above their weight with more success than SC Heerenveen.Since winning promotion to the Eredivisie in 1993, the ambitious Frisian club has slowly but surely established itself in the top half of the Dutch top flight.Heerenveen's greatest season to date came six years ago, when they finished second in the league and qualified for the Champions League.A year later they dipped down to 10th, but since then they have achieved fourth, seventh, fourth, fifth and seventh and are consequently regular UEFA Cup qualifiers.
Not bad for a club based in a town with a population of less than 40,000 in the north of the country, well away from the big cities. One explanation for their ability to compete with the likes of PSV, Ajax, Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar can be found in the make-up of their squad.Of their 10 first-team squad midfielders, nine are foreigners, while up front, only two out of seven strikers are Dutch. One player familiar to Boro fans will be veteran midfielder Paul Bosvelt, who was a Premiership regular for Manchester City not so long ago.The club are on a sound financial footing, which makes their consistency all the more remarkable and admirable. They have a reputation as a footballing academy and graduates include Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jon Dahl Tomasson, Markus Allback and Erik Edman. They did, though, loosen the purse strings this summer, paying a club record fee of £3m for Malmo's Brazilian striker Afonso Alves.
Tonight's match (ko 7.30pm local time) will be played in the impressive Abe Lenstra Stadion, which boasts a capacity of 21,600 following redevelopment work which, when complete, will boost the eventual capacity to 26,000.
