Folderen in strijd tegen aanslagen
„We willen ons geloof beschermen.
„We wonen hier.

Somali Islamic Courts Offers US Olive Branch
"It was shameful for the US to support warlords who have ruined our country for the last 15 years," said Aweys.
MOGADISHU — Somalia's rising influential Islamic Courts Union, now controlling the capital Mogadishu and large parts of the Horn of Africa country, is offering an olive branch to the United States.
"We are ready for partnership with the Americans. We would like to work with them if they respect us and stop interfering with Somali internal affairs," Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aweys, head of the Somali Council of Islamic Courts, told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
"I am not against the US or any other country," he added.
Washington has ruled out any contact with Aweys, whom it is designating a terrorist for alleged links to Al-Qaeda network, but left the door open to contact with other members of the Islamic Courts.
Somalia's interim government and the Islamic Courts last week agreed to recognize each other and hold more talks on July 15 at a meeting in Khartoum brokered by the Arab League.
Tensions have risen between the two sides since the Islamic Courts defeated the US-led warlord Alliance for the Restoration of Peace and Counter-Terrorism (ARPCT) and seized full control of the capital Mogadishu on June.
Warlords had controlled the capital since the 1991 overthrow of president Mohamed Siad Barre.
After seizing Mogadishu, JIC fighters swiftly marched northwards, overrunning Jowhar and a string of other small outposts in Hiiraan region without heavy resistance.
Home to about 10 million largely impoverished people, Somalia has lacked almost all the trappings of a functional state, such as national systems of education, healthcare and justice, for the past 15 years.
Stop Meddling
Aweys, a former army colonel, said the United States must respect the sovereignty of the African nation.
"America should know that all people are equal and that no one has a right to dictate policies to others, including how to administer a nation," he stressed.
"It is our right to impose the laws that we want to govern our country. If we follow Shari`ah, it is not America's problem."
Believed to be in his late 60s, Aweys founded the capital's first Shari`ah court in the mid-1990s.
The head the CIC, which will have ultimate authority over the Islamic Courts Union, criticized Washington for bankrolling the warlords.
"It was shameful for the US to support warlords who have ruined our country for the last 15 years. It was not only a mistake, but a strategic error for them," he said.
Last week, the US top diplomat in charge of Africa Jendayi Frazer sought the help of the Islamic Courts to arrest terrorists believed to be hiding in Somalia.
Nearly half of Americans believe their government should mind its own business and let other countries get along as best they can on their own, a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll showed on Friday, April 14.
For the past five years, the US has been championing a "democracy" drive worldwide and a global "war on terror."
Border Dispute
Aweys also suggested talks with arch-foe Ethiopia to resolve a lingering territorial dispute that has been a source of animosity between the two countries.
"We are ready to negotiate," he said.
Relations between the countries have been frosty since they fought in 1977-1978 over the ownership of the barren Ogaden region, which is largely inhabited by ethnic Somalis.
"Ethiopia mistreats the Somalis under their administration. The land was given to them by colonialists and we will seek justice to resolve the crisis that is dividing the two countries," Aweys aid.
"The land taken by Ethiopia cannot be forgotten because it is attached to our blood and nationalists," he said, referring to the casualities of war.
Analysts have said that efforts to settle the border dispute face challenges, notably because Addis Ababa is a key ally of Washington in its so-called war on terror.

Vier verkrachters opgehangen in Pakistan

PARIS — French national soccer team player Franck Ribery did not notice that his reversion to Islam would steal the limelight at his country's opener in Germany World Cup 2006 as the attacking midfielder raised his hands and supplicated to God like a typical Muslim before the kickoff.
The 23-year-old Ribery sees his new faith a matter of privacy and dislikes to talk about it in public with many French knowing nothing about his reversion to Islam.
The Olympique Marseille right-sided winger and midfielder has even been reluctant to tell reporters his reversion story, though it is believed that his Muslim wife, of Moroccan origin, played a pivotal role in his new lease of life.
Some reports hinted at his one-year stay in Turkish Galatasaray in 2005 when he helped the team win the 2005 Turkish Cup.
He rarely speaks about how he found the Muslim faith, urging the paparazzi to let him live in peace.
But he recently told the Paris Match magazine that he felt "safe" with Islam.
"Islam is my source of strength either in or outside the playground," he said.
"I lead a difficult career and I was determined to find peace of mind, and I finally found Islam."
Ribery's reversion to Islam was first leaked by L'Express magazine earlier this year, though the weekly did not mention him by name and said that a national team player was used to frequenting a mosque in southern Marseille.
Thousands of French revert to Islam every year in France, but not all of them declare their new faith outright, fearing discrimination at home or work and a stereotypical view that reverts tilt towards extremism, according to recent studies and surveys.
Last March, sources confirmed that former French soccer coach Philippe Troussier and his wife Dominique had reverted to Islam in the Moroccan capital where they live.
Super striker Anelka, who played for Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Liverpool and Manchester City, eventually had to leave for the Turkish league after increasing harassment.
France is home to some six to seven Muslims, the largest Muslim minority in Europe.
Proud
Steve Bradore of Shehada organization, which caters for Muslim reverts, said that French Muslims must be proud of Ribery.
"He is really a source of pride for us due his unique performance and modesty," he told IslamOnline.net Saturday, June 17.
Ribery is tipped to succeed playmaker legend and three-time FIFA World Player of the Year Zinedine Zidane, who said he will quit football at the end of the World Cup.
He started his playing career at his home town club US Boulogne and then moved to Alès, Brest and FC Metz in consecutive seasons.
His move to Olympique Marseille has earned him top French player honors for the months of August, October and November 2005. He was selected for the France squad for the FIFA World Cup 2006 in Germany.
France's opener with Switzerland at the World Cup ended goalless to the disappointment of the French people.
The French team will play on Sunday, June 18, with South Korea, which is a virtual must-win fixture for the 1998 World Cup winners if they are to cruise square two.
The Koreans top Group G ahead after the 2-1 win over Togo.
quote:EU Muslim Conf. Probes Challenges
ISTANBUL – A galaxy of Muslim thinkers, scholars and leaders from all over the world flocked to Istanbul to attend a conference, which kicked off on Saturday, July 1, on the challenges facing European Muslims and the opportunities within their reach.
The two-day conference, themed Muslims of Europe: Challenges and Opportunities, aims at bringing together Muslim intellectuals and leaders from various ethnic and linguistic backgrounds to look at some of the most pertinent issues that face European Muslims and their societies.
Issues such as integration, citizenship, identity, Islamophobia and media representation, faith and its public role, and combating extremism top the agenda.
A galaxy of Muslim thinkers, scholars and leaders from all over the world are attending the two-day conference.
The focus for this conference is Europe because there is a common legacy of migration, minority status and culture that is distinct.
The event will help promote dialogue within European Muslim communities and explore the need for positive integration in a European context.
In addition to six plenary and breakout sessions, the conference also features a number of lectures by prominent Muslim scholar Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, Sheikh Abdallah Bin Bayyah and Amr Khalid.
The two-day conference is arranged by a steering group representing a number of major European Muslim organizations and figures.
Key participants include Muslim intellectual Tariq Ramadan, American scholar Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, British singers Yusuf Islam and Sami Yusuf.
Turkey is considered the model location for holding this conference, as it represents the virtual line that separates "the East and the West" and "Christianity and Islam."
It is also the sole country with a Muslim majority that is queuing to join the EU.
Cooperation
In his opening speech, Turkish Minister of State Mehmet Aydin said "we should not blame each other because there are many problems that we should join hands to work them out."
He highlighted some of the reasons hindering the integration of Muslims in European societies.
"There are many reasons behind the weak integration of Muslims into there respective European societies as their stay in these countries is regarded 'transitional', the matter which does not make these countries take the suitable measures that may ease the integration of these Muslims."
Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), said integration is easier said but done.
He criticized the depiction, by some, that Muslims are "the enemies from within", a smeared image which both parties should work to eliminate.
Sheikh Ali Gomaa, Grand Mufti of Egypt, said the conference "should be the start for us to do something and not only to speak because we should have been working on this many years ago."
Palestine
Qaradawi asserted that Muslims should be "upright without being inclusive and they should work for integration but not assimilation."
Qaradawi asserted that Muslims should be "upright without being inclusive and they should work for integration but not assimilation."
In his address, Qaradawi condemned the escalating Israeli aggressions against the Palestinian people and urged the organizers to include this in their final declaration.
He also took issue with the absence of Europeans from the conference, saying he expected to see Muslims and Europeans present.
"There is no harm in doing this; i.e. holding a meeting for Muslims to come to have a mutual understanding of their own issues then they can present themselves clearly to the other," noted the senior scholar.
"Islam calls for human brotherhood as we all belong to one Creator, Almighty Allah, and to one father, Adam."
Qaradawi urged Europeans to positively recognize the existence of Muslims among their ranks, noting that there are many native Muslims in Europe especially in the Balkan.
He noted that "some Europeans do not want those who are different from them in terms of color, faith or race, but this is against the diversity that characterizes the whole creation of God. We want all human beings to respect diversity and variety."
Qaradawi asserted that Muslims should be "upright without being inclusive and they should work for integration but not assimilation."
