quote:
Benicio Monserrat Rafael Del Toro Sanchez (born February 19, 1967) is an Academy Award winning actor. He was born in San German, Puerto Rico and grew up in Santurce, but spent his teens and attended high school in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh.

His parents, Gustavo Adolfo Del Toro Bermudez and Fausta Sanchez Rivera, were both lawyers. He has an older brother, also named Gustavo, who is a pediatric oncologist working in Manhattan.

Biography
Benicio attended Academia del Perpetuo Socorro (The Academy of Our Lady of Perpetual Help), a Roman Catholic school in Miramar, Puerto Rico. When he was nine years old, his mother died of hepatitis. At age 13, his father moved his family to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, near Chambersburg, where Benicio was enrolled in Mercersburg Academy, a boarding school.

After graduation, Del Toro followed the advice of his father and pursued a practical degree in business at the University of California, San Diego. Success in an elective drama course encouraged him to drop out of college and study with noted acting teacher Stella Adler in Los Angeles, as well as at the Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York. Benicio hid his new career goals from his family until roles began to come his way.

He began to surface in small television parts during the late 1980s, playing mostly thugs and drug dealers on programs like "Miami Vice" and the NBC miniseries, "Drug Wars: The Kiki Camarena Story." Work in films followed, beginning with his debut in Big Top Pee-wee and in the 007 film Licence to Kill, in which 21-year-old Benicio held the distinction of being the youngest actor ever to play a Bond villain.

Although both films were considered box office disappointments, Del Toro continued to give worthy performances in movies like The Indian Runner (1991), China Moon (1991), Christopher Columbus: The Discovery (1992), Money for Nothing (1993), Fearless (1993), and Swimming with Sharks (1994).

His career gained real momentum in 1995 with his breakout performance in The Usual Suspects, where he stole scenes from his more seasoned costars as the mumbling, wisecracking Fred Fenster. The role won him an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actor, and firmly established him as "the guy to watch."

The heat from Suspects led to more strong roles in independent and major studio films. He played the charming, ruthless mobster Gaspare in Abel Ferrara's The Funeral (1996) and won a second consecutive Best Supporting Actor Independent Spirit Award for his work as Benny Dalmau in Basquiat (1996), directed by his friend, artist Julian Schnabel. Benicio also shared the screen with Robert De Niro in the big budget thriller The Fan, in which he played Juan Primo, a charismatic Mexican baseball star.

In 1997, Alicia Silverstone personally chose Benicio to costar with her in the quirky romantic comedy Excess Baggage, which she also produced. The film was generally panned, but critics singled out Benicio's distinctive screen presence and creative performance.

For Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the 1998 film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's famous book, he packed on 40+ pounds to play Dr. Gonzo (aka Oscar Zeta Acosta), Thompson's lawyer and drug-fiend cohort. Del Toro's highly immersive, uncanny performance divided critics and audiences. The negative reviews upset him, as he had fully invested himself in the role both emotionally and physically, even burning himself with cigarettes for one particular scene (later cut from the film). Even though del Toro has told interviewers this was a low point in his career, Terry Gilliam's surrealistic film has earned a cult following over the years.

Returning from a self-imposed two-year hiatus after Fear and Loathing, Benicio would gain a mainstream audience in 2000 with an impressive string of performances in four high-profile films. First up was The Way of the Gun, a sardonic crime yarn that reunited him with The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, making his directorial debut.

A few months later, he stood out among a first-rate ensemble cast in Steven Soderbergh's Traffic, a complex dissection of the North American drug wars. As Javier Rodriguez -- a Mexican border cop struggling to remain honest amid the corruption and deception of illegal drug trafficking -- Benicio, who spoke most of his lines in Spanish, gave a heartfelt, multifaceted performance that dominated the film and earned him his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. His universally praised work swept all of the major critics awards in 2000, as well as the Golden Globe, and the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Actor. In addition to the critical accolades, Traffic was also a surprise success at the box office, bringing Benicio real Hollywood clout for the first time in his career.

While Traffic was still playing in theaters, two other del Toro films were released in late 2000/early 2001. He had a brief, memorable role as the diamond thief Franky Four Fingers in Guy Ritchie's hip caper comedy Snatch, and was powerful as a mentally-challenged Native American man in The Pledge, directed by his old friend Sean Penn.

All of this attention helped to cement Benicio's status as a sex symbol. His smoldering looks have led to comparisons with James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Brad Pitt, and placement on People Magazine's annual "50 Most Beautiful People" list. Although he stayed out of the limelight in 2002, Benicio had another banner year in 2003 with the release of The Hunted, an action thriller costarring Tommy Lee Jones, and the drama 21 Grams, an acting tour-de-force, costarring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts. He went on to garner another Best Supporting Actor nomination for his work in the latter.

His most recent work can be seen in the film adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel Sin City, directed by Robert Rodriguez. He is currently filming a version of the life of Che Guevara, directed by Steven Soderbergh.

Trivia
Del Toro has a cameo in Madonna's music video clip La Isla Bonita as a background character.
In 2001, Del Toro became the fourth Oscar winner whose winning role was a character who speaks predominantly in a foreign language.
He is the third Puerto Rican actor to win an Oscar. The other two were actors Jose Ferrer and Rita Moreno.
The night he won his Oscar, it was the first time that two actors born in Puerto Rico were nominated in the same category. (The other actor was Joaquin Phoenix for his role in Gladiator).

Joaquin Phoenix.

Oeps, was ik bijna de i vergeten!
quote:
Joaquin Rafael Phoenix (pronounced /wəˈkin/) (born October 28, 1974 in San Juan, Puerto Rico), once also known as Leaf Phoenix, is an Academy Award nominated and Golden Globe Award-winning, American actor.

He often plays supporting roles as conflicted, insecure characters with a dark side. Phoenix is a devout vegan. He has stated on numerous occasions that he has never watched any of his performances on screen.

Upon being cast as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line after Cash himself approved, Phoenix responded by buying a guitar and learning how to play. He spent several years practicing in-character as Johnny Cash before principal photography, including voice and guitar lessons, and mimicking Cash's personae. In 2006, he was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, and won a Golden Globe in the same category, for his portrayal. Reese Witherspoon, who portrayed June Carter Cash in the film, stated during an interview that when they first performed in-character before a live audience, she was so impressed with his impersonation that she knew she "had to step it up a notch". Indeed, all of the vocal tracks in the movie and on the accompanying soundtrack are played and sung by Phoenix and Witherspoon.

The scar on Phoenix's lip is popularly believed to be the result of a repaired cleft lip. However, he has stated in interviews that his mother, while pregnant with him, felt a sharp pain one day and he was born with a scar on his lip. The birth scar is a microform, almost taking the form of a cleft, as the tissues just reached far enough to join up; since the bone and muscle tissues joined correctly no surgery or cleft repair was required.

Early life, siblings
Phoenix's father, John Lee Bottom, is of Irish and Spanish descent; his mother, Arlyn Sharon Dunetz, was born in the Bronx, New York City to Orthodox Jewish emigrants from Hungary and Russia.

Shortly after they met, the two joined the Children of God cult and began traveling throughout South America as missionaries. Joaquin Phoenix was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and lived there until he was six years old; he speaks Spanish fluently.

He is the third of five children, the others are River (1970 - 1993), Rain (or "Rainbow Joan of Arc"; 1973), Liberty Butterfly (or "Libertad Mariposa"; 1976), and Summer (or "Summer Joy"; 1978) .

After leaving the cult and returning to the USA (upon which they adopted the surname "Phoenix"), John and Arlyn Phoenix encouraged their children to develop their creative instincts. Since his siblings had nature-related names, Joaquin changed his name to "Leaf."

The family moved to Los Angeles, where his mother started working as a secretary for NBC, and his father became a landscaper. His parents hired an agent, who eventually got the five children acting work.

Film career
Phoenix's first acting jobs were guest appearances on two television shows with his brother River: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1982) and Backwards: The Riddle of Dyslexia (1984).

He made his big-screen debut in Space Camp (1986), playing the role of Max, and his first starring role was in Russkies (1987). He went on to establish himself as a child actor in Parenthood (1989), before deciding to withdraw from acting for a while and move to Mexico with his father.

Phoenix came back into public view under tragic circumstances — he was the person who dialed 9-1-1 when his brother River suffered a fatal drug overdose outside Hollywood nightclub The Viper Room.

He was reluctant to re-enter the world of acting, but he did so at the insistence of his friends. He changed his name from "Leaf" back to "Joaquin."

He portrayed a troubled teen in Gus Van Sant's To Die For, and has earned positive reviews for adult roles as the cruel Roman emperor Commodus in Gladiator (for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor), a conflicted priest in Quills, a washed-up baseball player in M. Night Shyamalan's Signs, and a lovestruck farmer in Shyamalan's The Village.

On January 26, 2006, a few days after his Golden Globe win for Walk The Line, he and another person were involved in an auto accident in the Hollywood Hills suburb in Los Angeles when his SUV flipped over and skidded onto its side. He suffered no serious injuries, and was pulled from his overturned car, in a bizarre detail, by German art film director Werner Herzog, whose home was located nearby. Phoenix appeared at the 2006 Screen Actors Guild Awards a few days later.

Phoenix is rumored to be cast as John Kelly (aka John Clark) in the film version of Tom Clancy's best-selling novel, Without Remorse. This is unconfirmed as of April 2006.

He has recently admitted himself into rehab to deal with alcoholism. He is also a chain smoker.

He also directed a music video for the recently acclaimed band "She Wants Revenge"

Kate Elizabeth Winslet (born October 5, 1975) is an Academy Award-nominated English actress. She is noted for having played a wide range of diverse characters over her career, though her best known role may be that of Rose DeWitt Bukater in the highest-grossing film of all time, Titanic (1997).

Although Winslet has not won an Academy Award, she has been highly favoured by the Academy, and holds the record for the youngest person to receive two Oscar nominations, as well as the record for the most Oscar nominations of any actor before the age of 30 (having received a total of four nominations by that age).

Early life
Winslet was born in Reading, Berkshire to Roger Winslet and Sally Bridges, both of whom were actors. Her maternal grandparents, Oliver and Linda Bridges, founded and operated the Reading Repertory, and her uncle, Robert Bridges, appeared in the original West End production of Oliver! Her sisters are Beth Winslet and Anna Winslet, also actresses.

Winslet, raised an Anglican, began studying drama at the age of eleven, and was soon cast as a spokesperson for a cereal in television commercials.

Career
Winslet's career began on television, with a co-starring role in the BBC children's science-fiction serial Dark Season in 1991, followed by appearances in the made-for-tv movie Anglo-Saxon Attitudes in 1992 and an episode of the medical drama Casualty in 1993, also for the BBC.

Winslet's film career took off in 1994 when she starred in a joint leading role, as Juliet Hulme in director Peter Jackson's critically acclaimed Heavenly Creatures, playing a vivacious and imaginative teen who helps her best friend murder her mother when they are not allowed to be together. This role was followed by the successful film Sense and Sensibility (co-starring Emma Thompson), which made her well-known, especially in the UK. Winslet became famous world-wide after the 1997 release of Titanic, which was the most expensive film of all time, and became the highest-grossing film of all time after several months in release, grossing $600 million at the United States box office.

Winslet has since become regarded as something of a critics' darling, having received generally positive reviews for every one of her films. Despite Titanic's success, Winslet has continued making lower-budget films, including Hideous Kinky and Holy Smoke; her roles in smaller, more artistic films appears to be one of choice, as she turned down the lead in Shakespeare in Love to make Hideous Kinky. She has also taken several roles in studio "period drama"s like Quills, Iris and Finding Neverland. For a time, she became associated with such films and given the nickname "Corset Kate". Winslet has most recently appeared in several American films, including the well-reviewed quirky comedy Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the dramatic thriller The Life of David Gale.

Winslet has also enjoyed a brief taste of success as a singer, with her single "What If" from soundtrack of Christmas Carol: The Movie, which reached #1 in Ireland and #6 in the UK. More recently, she participated in a duet with singer "Weird Al" Yankovic on the Sandra Boynton CD, Dog Train, and sang in the 2006 film, Romance and Cigarettes.

In 2005, Winslet appeared in a television commercial for the American Express credit card. As part of the "My Life, My Card" campaign, the ad shows Winslet visiting shops in London as she makes references to all the events that have happened to her film characters - such as going to prison for murder (Heavenly Creatures), almost drowning (Titanic), and having her memory erased (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). During the ad, she is shown holding items relating to her films; during the reference to Sense and Sensibility she thumbs through a copy of the book, and when she references Finding Neverland, she's holding a hook.

In February 2006, Winslet announced that she will collaborate with her husband, director Sam Mendes, on a film version of the Richard Yates novel, Revolutionary Road.

Despite being married to one of the UK's best theatre directors, she is not a stage actress.

Personal life
On November 22, 1998, Winslet married director Jim Threapleton. The two have a daughter, Mia Honey, who was born on October 12, 2000. After a divorce in 2001, Winslet began a relationship with director Sam Mendes, whom she married on May 24, 2003, on the island of Anguilla in the Carribean. Their son, Joe Alfie, was born on December 22, 2003.

The media, particularly in England, have enthusiastically documented her weight fluctuations over the years. Winslet has been outspoken about her refusal to lose weight in order to conform to the Hollywood ideal. In February 2003, the British edition of GQ magazine published photographs of Winslet which had been airbrushed to make her look dramatically thinner than she really was; Winslet issued a statement saying that the alterations were made without her consent.

Her home town of Reading has named a street – Winslet Place – in her honour, built on the site of a demolished cinema.

Awards and Nominations
Winslet has earned four Oscar nominations and four Golden Globe nominations, as well as one BAFTA Award and three further BAFTA nominations.

She has also received numerous awards and nominations from other organizations, including the Screen Actors Guild and the Evening Standard British Film Awards. A more comprehensive list can be found here

Academy Awards (Oscars)
On January 25, 2005, Winslet was nominated for an Oscar for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind where she eventually lost to Hilary Swank. She surpassed Marlon Brando's record for the youngest actor to have received four Oscar nominations. Her Titanic nomination secured her the record for the youngest ever double-Oscar-nominee. Her Academy Award nominations to date are as follows:

1995 - Nominated - Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Sense and Sensibility
1997 - Nominated - Best Actress in a Leading Role - Titanic
2001 - Nominated - Best Actress in a Supporting Role - Iris
2005 - Nominated - Best Actress in a Leading Role - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Golden Globes
Winslet has received Golden Globe nominations for Sense and Sensibilty (Best Supporting Actress, Drama), Titanic (Best Actress, Drama), Iris (Best Supporting Actress, Drama), and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Best Actress, Musical or Comedy).

BAFTAs
Winslet won a BAFTA Award as Best Supporting Actress for her role in Sense and Sensibility. She also received a nomination as Best Supporting Actress for Iris, and a double nomination for Best Actress in 2005, for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Finding Neverland. She lost to Jennifer Connelly and Imelda Staunton, respectively.

Grammys
In 2000 she won a Grammy Award for the 'Best Spoken Word Album for Children' for Listen To the Storyteller.
