Wayne Mark Rooney (born 24 October 1985 in Liverpool) is widely considered to be one of the leading young talents in world football - in September 2005 he was selected by his fellow professionals as the inaugural FIFPro World Young Player of the Year. He currently plays for Manchester United and the England national football team as a second striker, although the 2005-06 season has seen Rooney playing both centrally and on the left and right flanks. He wears the number 8 shirt for his club, vacated by Nicky Butt, and is generally given the number 9 for his country.

Rooney was brought up in a rough urban area of eastern Liverpool called Croxteth, where he and his two brothers attended the local Christian Brothers De La Salle school.

Although he has been under an intense media spotlight since first arriving on the scene in 2002, it was not until his performances at the Euro 2004 that he gained a reputation on the world stage, as he spearheaded the English attack, scoring 4 goals. England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson compared his impact to that made by the legendary Brazilian, Pelé at a similar age during the 1958 World Cup. This comparison has led to him being nicknamed "El Blanco Pelé" - the white Pelé - by some fans.

Premiership breakthrough
Rooney gained national prominence in October 2002 when he became the youngest goal scorer in the history of the Premiership at 16 years and 360 days of age, while playing for Everton F.C. His spectacular goal against Arsenal was a last-minute winner. At the end of 2002 he won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Young Personality award.

This record has since been surpassed twice; first by James Milner, aged 16 yrs 357 days, while playing for Leeds United F.C. on December 26, 2003; second by James Vaughan, aged 16 yrs 271 days while playing for Everton F.C. on April 10, 2005, making him the youngest Premiership goal scorer to date.

He has also figured prominently in recent England international matches, after having become the youngest ever player to play for England, in a friendly against Australia, on February 12, 2003, aged 17 years, 111 days. England's youngest ever player previous to this was James F. M. Prinsep of Clapham Rovers, who made his debut almost one and a quarter centuries before, on April 5, 1879, aged 17 years, 253 days.

Rooney is also the youngest England scorer ever (17 years, 317 days). In 2004, Rooney became the youngest player ever to score in the European Football Championships on 17 June 2004 when he scored twice against Switzerland; however the Swiss player, Johan Vonlanthen, broke this record against France four days later. However, Rooney was injured in the quarter finals against Portugal - England were subsequently knocked out. As of 2 March 2006, he has played for England 29 times and has scored 11 international goals.

World Cup 2006 doubts
There is concern for Rooney's fitness ahead of the upcoming World Cup after he fractured the base of the fourth metatarsal on his right foot during Manchester United's 3-0 defeat away at Chelsea on April 29, 2006, putting him out of action for six weeks [1]. However, a similar injury at Euro 2004 took up to 10 weeks for him to recover. England's first game is against Paraguay on June 10, casting serious doubts as to whether he will make the start of the World Cup, or even be able to play at all.

Transfers
Before turning 17 and becoming eligible for a professional contract, he was playing for £100 a week and living with his family on a council estate. Now, the teenage sensation has raised that several times and earns an estimated £50,000 (¤73,500 / $90,000) a week. Following intense media coverage of Rooney at the 2004 European Championships, Everton claimed that they would not transfer his contract for less than £50 million. The club offered Rooney a new contract for £50,000 a week. This, however, was turned down by Rooney on the 27 August 2004, leaving Manchester United and Newcastle United to battle for his services.

The Times newspaper reported rumours that Newcastle's initial bid was made at the request of Rooney's agent, who eventually made £1.5 million from the deal and employs the son of the Newcastle United chairman. This bid was intended to force Manchester United to try to buy the player a year earlier than they had planned. In any event, the Newcastle United bid succeeded in forcing Manchester United to enter the bidding. Rooney handed in a transfer request to Everton and on 31 August 2004 Rooney signed for Manchester United after a deal worth up to £27 million was agreed. The deal took place rapidly, and was concluded just hours before the transfer deadline.

The initial fee of £23m is to be paid directly to Everton Football Club over two years; the rest of the money depends on appearances and/or success at Manchester United and/or England. It is unlikely the fee will reach the maximum £27m due to the complex nature of the contract drawn up by the two clubs. A final fee in the region of £25m plus costs (mainly agents' fees) is more likely. In the club's 2004-05 accounts, Rooney's contract is recorded as having a book cost of £25.066 million as at 30 June 2005, with contingent payables of £4 million, giving a maximum final fee of £29.066 million including costs. Rooney's transfer fee is the second highest for an exclusively British deal, with only his Manchester United team-mate, Rio Ferdinand, commanding a higher fee. Rooney does, however, have the honour of being the most expensive teenage footballer ever, being only 18 when Manchester United signed him.

Rooney made his début for the club on 28 September 2004 in the UEFA Champions League against Fenerbahçe, scoring a hat-trick and also an assist (the match finished in a 6-2 win for United). For the 2005-06 season, Rooney initially started playing in wider positions than his more favoured central role. Pundits and fans alike agreed that he seemed less effective in such positions, and eventually, after Manchester United's poor run of form early in the season. Sir Alex Ferguson moved him back to his stronger position, playing behind Dutchman Ruud van Nistelrooy as a second striker. He got his first professional Winners Medal in the 2006 English League Cup. He was also named the Man of The Match in the Carling Cup final against Wigan Athletic, after scoring 2 goals in the final (a 4-0 victory for United), en route to winning his first senior medal. He was also a member of the United side defeated on penalties in the 2005 FA Cup final by Arsenal F.C..

Disciplinary issues
Rooney is also known for his hot temper and ill-discipline on the pitch. In September 2005, against Northern Ireland Rooney launched an on-field outburst at England captain David Beckham, but since then, the pair have played down the bust-up.

His temper problems also came to the forefront in the 0-0 draw with Villarreal during United's Champion's League encounter in Spain. Rooney was sent off for dissent after he sarcastically applauded the referee, Kim Milton Nielsen after he was initially booked.

Rooney has pledged to keep his temper under control and both his club and international managers have defended him, citing his youth as the main reason for his behaviour. It is known that other teams and players are familiar with Rooney's disciplinary problems and sometimes use them against him, teasing him or provoking him. Since the 2004-05 season he has been trying to keep his temper in check, as shown by a drop in cards received so far in the 2005-06 season.

Personal life
Rooney has rarely been out of the media spotlight since his emergence, and has received criticism for his relationship with fiancée Coleen McLoughlin, who is often featured in the tabloid press for her shopping habits.

Rooney's personal life has also often been marred by accusations from the press surrounding his visits to aging prostitutes, which he later unequivocally confirmed. [3]

In April 2006, newspapers suggested that he owed in excess of £700,000 in gambling debts [4], possibly connected to a business partner of Michael Owen [5]. Days later, he accepted £100,000 (which he donated to charity) in libel damages from The Sun and News of the World newspapers which had claimed he had assaulted his fiancée in a nightclub. [6]

Charity work
Rooney has often been involved in raising money for Claire House and Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, and is also noted for his role as ambassador for SOS Children UK. As a member of the Manchester United side, he also takes part in charity and promotional work for UNICEF.

Publishing deal
On 9 March 2006 Rooney signed the largest sports book deal in publishing history with the publishers HarperCollins. He is to receive a £5 million advance, plus royalties, for a minimum of five books to be published over a twelve-year period. The first book, an autobiography, is scheduled to be published after the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

The April 18, 2006 issue of the respected German soccer magazine kicker featured an article about Rooney (p. 79 and 80), and following facts were presented:

Rooney has signed lucrative contracts with Nike, Nokia, Ford and Coca Cola. His marketing value is estimated at 46 million Euro, making him the third-highest rated soccer player behind Ronaldinho and David Beckham. As a side note, he is featured on 500 million Coca-Cola cans.
Rooney's (yet to be published) autobiography earned him a record advance payment of 7,5 million Euro.

Het topic van de moffen loopt beter

Ik zag vanmorgen een stukje in de krant met een lijstje van Engelse spelers met dezelfde blessure als Rooney en de herstelperiode. Het kortst was die periode bij Beckham, die er in 2002 9 weken over deed. Dus het wk lijkt Rooney te kunnen vergeten.

Hebben ze voor Rooney eigenlijk wel een vervanger?
De eerste speler die bij mij op komt is Vassel maar die is volgens mij lang niet goed genoeg En Alan Smith misschien ooh nee die is ook al gebleseerd

Wat een selectie heeft Engeland toch: alleen het middenveld is al om van te watertanden

Rooney kan het WK vrijwel zeker vergeten lees ik op TT. Bij onderzoek in het ziekenhuis is duidelijk geworden dat hij meerdere botjes in zijn voet heeft gebroken. Dit in tegenstelling tot wat eerder gedacht werd, namelijk dat hij alleen een breuk in een voetwortelbeentje had opgelopen. In dat geval had de herstelperiode zes weken geduurd. Deze zal nu zeker langer zijn.

Eriksson blijft vastberaden om Rooney te selecteren

Sven-Goran Eriksson blijft vastberaden Wayne Rooney op te nemen in zijn definitieve 23-koppige selectie. Ook wanneer het blijkt dat de 20-jarige steraanvaller van Manchester United pas fit en dus beschikbaar is voor de finale op 9 juli. Een tweede scan heeft uitgewezen dat Rooney meerdere botjes in zijn rechtervoet heeft gebroken, waardoor zijn revalidatie tot acht weken zou kunnen oplopen.

“Waarom ik Rooney toch wil meenemen? Om de finale te winnen”, beantwoordde Eriksson zijn eigen vraag. “We hebben het wel over Wayne Rooney. Die laat je niet buiten de selectie totdat je zeker weet dat hij niet kan spelen op het WK. De vraag blijft alleen kan hij spelen of niet? De artsen geven in de loop van donderdag uitsluitsel. Toch ben ik niet depressief. Het is spijtig voor hem en voor het team, maar we hebben voldoende goede spelers om een succesvol WK te spelen. We moeten verder. Het leven stopt niet omdat Rooney geblesseerd is. Feit is wel dat Rooney wanneer hij wordt geselecteerd niet meegaat naar Duitsland, maar in Manchester aan zijn herstel blijft werken.”

Ferdinand is al een jaar hopeloos uit vorm. Terry als de Schoffelaar en Carragher als opbouwer.

ja idd maar toch kreeg Ferdinand de voorkeur in de laatste interlands en moest Carra genoegen nemen met een linksback positie.. Nu is gelukkig A. Cole weer fit (althans aan het voetballen) en die is nr uno voor die positie of Konchesky moet 1e keuze worden maar dat lijkt me heel sterk

Wanhopige Engelsen klampen vast aan sprankje hoop rond Rooney

De blessure van Wayne Rooney is een soort national trauma in Engeland. Nu de kleine grote man van Manchester United waarschijnlijk niet kan meedoen aan het WK is het hele land van slag. Vrijwel iedere Engelsman had zijn WK-hoop gebaseerd op de vaardigehden van de jonge topaanvaller. Nu hij er niet bij kan zijn, lijken de kansen van Engeland dan ook in Rooins, zoals The Sun kopte.
Inmiddels wordt wanhopig vastgeklampt aan ieder bericht dat Rooney wellicht toch kan meedoen aan (een deel van) het WK. Volgens de Daily Star heeft de aanvaller aan zijn vrienden verteld dat hij op tijd fiot zal zijn voor de knock-outfase.
The Sun meldt dat teamdokter Leif Sward Sven Goran Eriksson hoop heeft gegeven door te stellen dat Rooney het WK toch nog haalt. Het lijkt echter allemaal een kwestie van 'de wens is de vader van de gedachte'.

Ondanks dat alles en iedereen in Engeland hoopt en bidt dat supervedette Wayne Rooney op tijd fit zal zijn om voor Engeland nog een rol van betekenis te spelen op het WK, is bondscoach Sven-Goran Eriksson toch maar zo wijs geweest om een Emile Heskey als reservespeler aan te wijzen voor het geval het onverhoopt toch niet mag lukken.

Voor Aaron Lennon van Tottenham Hotspur lijkt een jongensdroom uit te komen. De 19-jarige aanvaller uit de selectie van Martin Jol maakt nog steeds kans op een invitatie voor de Engelse selectie voor het WK. “Wat mij is overkomen, is te mooi om waar te zijn. Ik had nooit gedacht dat er een mogelijkheid zou zijn dat ik naar het WK zou gaan. Ik zou het fantastisch vinden om te gaan. Wie niet? Ik heb niet meer dan mijn best gedaan voor de Spurs en dacht het WK op de tv te zullen gaan volgen”, aldus de jonge vleugelspits.

Zou goed zijn als Lennon meegaat. Zo'n snelle en gevaarlijke jongen is goed te gebruiken.

The teenager is likely to be placed on standby with reports that Eriksson has watched him during visits to the Arsenal training ground where the Swede also ran the rule over defenders Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell. Walcott has yet to make a first-team outing for the Gunners since his move to the club from Southampton in January but his cause has been championed by manager Arsene Wenger. "If Sven calls me to ask should he take Walcott, I would not stop him doing that," said Wenger. "Theo needs games at the moment but he has something very special. It would be a gamble, but he is an option."

Eriksson gave Rooney his England debut at 17, although he had played for former club Everton's first-team before becoming the country's youngest ever player. Manchester United forward Rooney's chances of being fit for the World Cup in Germany appear to be slim, despite the 20-year-old spending sessions in an oxygen chamber to improve his chances of recovering from a broken foot. United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is wary of Rooney being taken to the World Cup in the hope he will recover for the later stages and then being pressured into playing when not fully-fit.

"I think Wayne will be in the squad. I'd do the same if I was in Sven-Goran Eriksson's position," said Ferguson. "Wayne is showing a great determination to try to get ready for the World Cup. We know it is a forlorn hope but we will give it a try. "We will see how he gets on over the next few weeks. That's the important time for him."

Former England captain Bryan Robson has voiced his concerns about taking Rooney and told BBC Radio Four: "I think if he is not fit then what is the point of him going? "You have other squad players who you know will be champing at the bit to impress and improve themselves at international level.

"If Wayne Rooney is not fit then he should not go and should stay back in Manchester. "But I think the manager should give him every chance right up to the last minute before making his decision as to whether he goes or not."

Owen raised concerns over the state of his fitness when he was not included in Newcastle's squad for their final game of the season against Chelsea. He could now play a part in Alan Shearer's testimonial at St James' Park on Thursday as he bids to recover from his own foot injury.
"That will be left down to Michael completely now," said Newcastle caretaker-manager Glenn Roeder. "If between the medical team and Michael, they thought there was any mileage in giving him a short run-out, that would happen.

"But if they didn't, he wouldn't take part. Michael wasn't on the bench because, exactly how he was after the game against Birmingham, he wasn't 100% happy with it. "He's done some light training this week, but he's not 100% happy with it. "There's still a dull ache there. It's nothing serious and he hasn't needed to visit the surgeon or have any more scans or X-rays since Sunday, and it's just a question now of being more patient and building him up.

"I'm sure there still is time for the World Cup, but with this injury now as far as Michael is concerned, I think you will have to take a weekly view of it rather than making long-term statements that can make you end up looking silly."

Eriksson's squad may have major worries in the striking department but the rest of his squad appears mostly to be the players he has kept faith during his five-year reign. Central defender Ledley King is expected to be included, despite his foot injury, while the only other doubts are over whether he will include Aaron Lennon ahead of Shaun Wright-Phillips and Stewart Downing in place of Jermaine Jenas.
