quote:1705 Brasil 1 tacks on to starboard, movistar carring on, but all the rest of the boats sailing now on starboard. Brunel or ABN AMRO TWO are in second. movistar stay on port and finally tack. All boats now on port tack. Brunel is the surprise package, holding well with the leader. ABN AMRO ONE is trailing with Pirates. Torben Grael took the start in front of the massive spectator fleet and still leads.
quote:1710GMT Ericsson have dropped to the back of the fleet, sailing on the left side of the course, but the leaders are on the right side. ABN AMRO TWO, Brasil 1, Pirates and ABN AMRO ONE have dived into the spectator fleet, scattering boats all around as there is a mad scramble to get out of the way. The wind seems to be shifting, with pressure on the right, but a lift in the middle of the course at the moment. Brasil 1 still leading from ABN AMRO TWo, then Piraes, movistar and ABN AMRO ONE followed by Brunel and Ericsson. Sailing outside the exclusion box is allowed, but is causing some consternation.

Cool, een WW2 schipquote:1715GMT The right side is the side to be and the leaders are Brasil 1, followed by Pirates taking ABN AMRO TWO, then movistar, ABN AMRO ONE, Brunel and Ericsson. Everybody is out here on the water, even a restored WW2 Liberty ship that might make a bit of a wind shadow for the leaders who are close to it. Wind speed about nine knots. The leaders trying to climb rounmd the bow of the ship.

2000 man, daar gaan we overheen in R'damquote:1720GMT movistar starting to look stronger in more pressure. The boats are still making good ground to windward to the Bay Bridge, though the trailing boats, Brunel and Ericsson are dropping back. Two miles to the windward mark. Today one span of the Bay Bridge has been closed so that the Bay Bridge walkers can watch the start of the Volvo Ocean Race Leg 6. Some 2,000 and more people are expected. The fleet is heading towards the Eastern Shore, but perhaps they should all be keeping a close eye on the depth sounder. Brasil 1 with Torben Grael at the wheel are still leading as they have from the gun. Ericsson and Brunel have sailed into some very soft conditions and are slowing badly.

quote:1725GMT Brasil 1 leading from Pirates with movistar in close attention, then the two ABN AMRO boats with - as we have seen before in light winds - ABN AMRO TWO leading ABN AMRO ONE. Ericsson parhaps coming back a little on the leading pack, Brunel slowing a little after their excellent start and first couple of miles. Just a mile or so to the mark.

quote:1730GMT movistar are making ground on the leaders, but it is the man with the light weather skills, Torben Grael, who has the lead in his pocket and is pulling away. It looks as though the first three boats will be Brasil 1, Pirates and movistar, but the Spaniards are looking as though they might be closing on Pirates. ABN AMRO ONE has tacked and crosses towards ABN AMRO TWO and on the srossing it looks as though the black boat has crossed in front of the kids. ONE is the first to tack into the middle of the clourse, while the rest of the fleet are continuing on. Brasil 1 then tack. The fleet is well to the right of the mark.

quote:1735GMT It looks as though there is slightly more pressure in the middle and Ericsson might be coming back into the race. Brunel has slipped off the back of the fleet. Traffic and spectators on the Bay Bridge have a fantastic view of the racing just in front of them.Brasil 1 on starboard, heading for the mark, and should be there in about three minutes. movistar is in second. Now Ericsson has come back into it, they have caught up on ABN AMRO TWO on the right side, while ABN AMRO ONE is sailing more in the middle of the course. Brasil 1 are the heroes of the moment, extending their lead every moment of the race so far.

damn...quote:1740GMT Brasil 1 rounds one minute and two seconds ahead of movistar, followed by Pirates another 41 seconds behind. ABN AMRO ONE have got in front of ABN AMRO TWO, but it is very close and with TWO getting to the mark slghtly cracked and ONE pointing high to get to the mark. There can't be more that a quarter of a boat length between them. ABN AMRO ONE gets there first, but ABN AMRO ONE have their spinnaker snuffer jammed and as a result TWO sails through them to leeward. ABN AMRO ONE were 55 seconds behind Pirates, TWO seven seconds from their big sister and then Ericsson one minute and one second behind.

quote:1745 Tricky stuff now as the fleet gybes downwind. movistar are trying to get into some new breeze that seems to be taking Brasil 1 into an increasing lead. Pirates were first to gybe, followed by Brasil 1, then ABN AMRO TWO and then movistar. Brunel rounded one minute 25 seconds behind Brasil 1 and the whole spread was five minutes and 11 seconds at this first mark. Paul Cayard has taken Pirates right into the spectator fleet once again and is hard to his port side, sailing towards the eastern Shore. ABN AMRO ONE gybes last.
