MS employee lifts the lid on the HD-DVD/Blu-ray debate

Microsoft has outlined prohibitive pricing, faltering industry support and technical troubles as the reasons behind why it has turned its back on the Blu-ray next-generation DVD format for the upcoming external Xbox 360 drive.

Microsoft has long associated itself with the rival HD-DVD format but few reasons have been given why. But now Microsoft PR employee Cesar Menendez has reported on his Gamerscore Blog that the MS big cheeses were reacting to a number of worries about Blu-ray.

Menendez sat down with Microsoft’s next-gen DVD drive boffins and asked the simple question: “Why HD-DVD?”

The answers were split into three categories: Price, industry support and Beta-ray's technical difficulties. First of all, Menendez mentions how Beta-ray drives are so much more expensive with one model (“that doesn’t even play CDs!”) going for $1800. “For 1,800, you could get a $500 Toshiba player, and about 40 HD movies,” he points out. Microsoft has promised the Xbox 360’s external HD-DVD drive will be affordable.

Then there’s the issue of industry support. Companies in the electronics and entertainment industries have been choosing the allegiances for years, but Menendez reports that the pendulum is swinging towards HD-DVD. “It's only a matter of time before people start backing out of the Blu-ray camp," he says, quoting an analyst’s expert view of the situation.

Finally, Menendez points to Sony’s recent admission that the PS3 could be delayed past its ‘spring’ release date because of problems with the Blu-ray technology. “Microsoft had serious doubts around the technical feasibility and pricing of Beta-ray for some time and our fears now seem well founded,” he says.

He also points out something he calls a “little reported fact” about the capacity of the Blu-ray DVD discs, which is often quoted as being much more than HD-DVD. “The first Beta-ray discs will actually hold less: only 25GB compared to HD DVD’s 30GB. That means less room for high definition extras and interactive features, which HD DVD says they fully intend to support.”

Microsoft announced a future external HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360 at January’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. It will allow you to watch movies on the new discs at much higher resolution and clarity. The difference between current DVDs and HD-DVDs has been described as being like the difference between VHS tapes and DVDs.

Ik had net bijna Full Auto gekocht omdat ik een nieuwe Xbox360 game wilde hebben... maar ik heb me kunnen inhouden en wacht gewoon netjes op echte toppers.

Het is een best wel leuke racer. Waarbij het inhalen een stuk makkelijker is dan bij de meeste racers.
