Eenmaal lang geleden het genoegen gehad om ze live mee te maken in de Jaap Eden Hal, was een fantastisch concert.

'You fucking die." . Mooi tussenstukje. Ik geloof dat Radiohead ook wel is beinvloed door de Pixies. En Bowie heeft inderdaad een Pixies cover gedaan, maar dat was er maar eentje toch?

En wie zei nou ook alweer dat Smells Like Teen Spirit een rip off was van U-mass? Anderen hoorde ik weer zeggen dat het op Gigantic was gebaseerd, en iemand anders noemde weer een compleet andere band.

Feit blijft dat de Pixies wel terug zijn te horen in verschillende band . Maar goed, mijn favo's:
Where is my mind
Dig for Fire
Cactus
Gouge Away
Monkey gone to heaven
En ongetwijfeld vergeet ik er nog veel .

Ze hebben ook een coole Beatles cover gedaan, Wild Honey Pie. Erg cool

This wasn't the first Pixies tribute album to come out in 1999, although it may have been the absolute last (didn't get it in my mailbox until December). However, I would rate it as the best Pixies tribute I've heard-the problem with a lot of tribute albums is that the contributing performers concentrate way too much on getting the original band's notation down while almost completely neglecting the energy/feel of the songs. In fact, the one major-label Pixies tribute that came out '99 ended up sounding like a bunch of flat versions of the original songs, and made me go back to Surfer Rosa/Come on Pilgrim to see if those records were actually as wonderful as I remembered them being.

So saying, most of the tracks on Lifelike Records' Pixies Fuckin' Die sound nothing the originals, yet still retain all the wonderfulness that made these songs classics in the first place. An April March contributes an atypically hard-rockin' version of "Alec Eiffel," while Moth Wranglers and Jarboe's versions of "No. 13 Baby" and "Tame" are beautiful and just a teensy bit really scary-and Twelve24's version of "Velouria" is worth the price of the disc alone. Other contributors to this disc include J Stroke, Bethany Curve, Underwater and Garageland. You may not be able to find this in stores yet, but they're still selling them off the Web site

On the heels of the reissuing of virtually their entire back catalog, The Pixies, that most upstanding of classic late 80s/early 90s alternative rock bands (who I'm sure need no introduction here) may be just a few baby steps away from a full-fledged reunion. Pixies frontman Frank Black (formerly known as Black Francis, for those who may have needed to ask) recently said in an interview with London radio station XFM that the group has been getting together every once in a while to play informally.

Black isn't 100% sold on the idea; he told the station, "I do dream about the Pixies reunion... It's like those schoolboy dreams when you don't do your homework and you don't study for the test, but I'm at the gig and we're hanging out, but it's an utter failure and I don't know the songs, and hardly anyone turns up for the gig and people walk out. That's what I'm afraid of, that it'd be a big, big failure."

Despite Black's hesitation, he does admit that the Pixies "do get together and have private jams together, but not for public consumption." It's a huge step, considering the well-publicized bad blood between Black and second singer/bassist Kim Deal. It was this tension that originally split up the band in 1993, leaving Deal to form The Breeders with sister Kelley. Black's confirmation that the original line-up of himself, Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago, and drummer David Lovering still play together is a big step toward the band overcoming their past difficulties and reforming for a tour-- or possibly a new album.
