The idea behind the Lamborghini Miura mid-engine supercar came from all over the ocean, from the United States, were the Ford GT40 was designed and built.
The Ford GT40 was practically unbeatable during it's entry in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but the car presented on this page is a GT40 Mark III, the street version of a seven Litre engined V-8 race car.
This specific type of car with the mid-engine placement inspired Lamborghini to build their own supercar for the road. The V-8 placed in the GT40 was however a little smaller than the massive 4.0 Litre V-12 Lamborghini engine, and fitting it in a chassis wasn't very simple, but a genius idea was found to overcome this problem, let's place the engine transversly in the chassis with the gearbox incorporated into the engine block, just like on the Mini Cooper engine.
After the chassis was shown with the engine in place, Marcello Gandini designed a sensuous body to fit the power of this very special car, way ahead of Ferrari in every aspect, they continued to build front engined cars up to the Boxer, which came years behind the fabulous Miura.
