Saha Injury Not Serious, Says Sir Alex

Louis Saha and Gabriel Heinze could both be United's substitutes bench for the visit of Sunderland to Old Trafford on Good Friday.

Saha suffered an injury in training on Wednesday. Press reports speculated that a recurrence of an old ankle injury could rule the French striker out for the rest of the season.

On Thursday, Sir Alex confirmed that Saha had indeed suffered a knock, but insists the injury is not as bad as has been reported.

"Louis got an injury in training on Wednesday," confirmed the Reds boss at his pre-match press conference. "It’s not serious. He may be on the bench against Sunderland, and he’ll certainly be fit for Monday."

Gabriel Heinze, who hasn't played for United since damaging knee ligaments in the 0-0 draw against Villarreal back in September, could make his first appearance for United in over six months against the Black Cats.

"I think Gabriel Heinze will be on the bench," the United manager revealed. "It’s a possibility. He’s been training very well and we couldn’t ask any more from him.

"You can imagine what he has been like. He has been fantastic in training. He hasn’t shown any inhibitions in his attitude towards training. "He’s been getting stuck right in, it’s like he’s never been away.

"I know that when players come back from these serious injuries, sometimes there is a certain trepidation about it. They’re wondering if they are going to be OK. But he’s got right into it and had no problems at all.

"It’s good to have him back. He’s infectious and he’s committed – fans love that type of player."

Heinze is known to be targeting a place in this summer's World Cup finals. And Sir Alex wants to help give the Argentinian defender the best possibile chance of making it.

"The problem for him in terms of making the World Cup is that we only have five games left and Mikael Silvestre’s form has been absolutely fantastic. Therefore it makes it difficult.

"But we will give him games and the chance to impress the Argentina coach and their medical staff, to show them he is all right for the World Cup.

"We should give him every opportunity to go to the World Cup," Sir Alex added. "He's 28 next week and we can't deny him the chance of playing in the biggest tournament for any player.

"Looking at him in training, in a month's time he will certainly be ready for a big competition. It's just slightly unfortunate for him that we only have five games left in our season."

Sir Alex Ferguson heeft in verklaringen aan de BBC laten weten dat Dong Fanghzuo wellicht vanaf december speelgerechtigd is voor Manchester United.

De 21-jarige Chinese aanvaller speelde de voorbije seizoenen voor de Belgische tweedeklasser Antwerp omdat de speler nog niet in aanmerking komt voor een werkvergunning in de Premier League.

“Dong heeft zich gekwalificeerd voor een Europees paspoort en dat is goed nieuws voor ons. Hij is al vier keer uitgekomen voor de Chinese nationale ploeg, dus is het duidelijk dat hij erg talentvol is. Hij is snel, sterk en ondanks dat 'ie niet kan voetballen zal 'ie heel waardevol voor ons zijn", aldus de Schotse coach.

United have not won the title for four seasons now and Ferguson knows his rivals will be stronger than ever. Chelsea have brought in Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko, Arsenal have added Tomas Rosicky while Liverpool have signed Craig Bellamy and Fabio Aurelio. Ferguson has yet to sign anyone. He has also had to cope with the fallout from Van Nistelrooy's transfer requests and Ronaldo's World Cup bust-up with Wayne Rooney.

Fergie is adamant Van Nistelrooy, 30, will not be allowed to leave on the cheap, with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich interested in his signature. He said: "Ruud asked away, it is as simple as that. He asked away before the Arsenal Cup final last year, then asked away through his representative and now has asked away himself in writing. Quite frankly, if he wants to leave there really is no point trying to persuade him to stay. If a player's heart is not in it then you have to make a decision. I couldn't tell you why he wants to leave or why his heart isn't in it, all I can tell you is he has asked away and we have accepted that."

The United boss refuses to be held to ransom in his search for the players and insists he does not need to bring in a new striker with Rooney, Louis Saha, Alan Smith and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer already at the club. He has bid Ŗ12million for Tottenham's Michael Carrick but revealed the North Londoners want double that for the England midfielder.

Fergie said: "World Cup year is always difficult but we tried to do some fundamental business before the tournament, making a bid for Carrick. Tottenham turned down that offer and are looking at something approaching double what we offered. They want to play the long game. We have put a value on him and we will not go above that."

Ferguson is certain Ronaldo will return to United, despite his World Cup bust-up with Rooney. The Portuguese winger claimed he would have to go and made no secret of his wish to for Real Madrid. But Fergie said: "Ronaldo will return to Manchester United. We are not in the process of letting our best players go, certainly not our young players. There is no rift between Wayne and Cristiano. In fact Wayne has been fantastic throughout all of this, he has handled the whole thing very well. I know Wayne has been in touch with Cristiano and I don't anticipate any problems."

Fergie insists he finds the axing of star players one of the most difficult aspects of his job — and believes his reputation for being tough is unfair.

Brutal
Van Nistelrooy will ultimately follow David Beckham, Paul Ince, Nicky Butt and Keane out of Old Trafford but Fergie insists these decisions were all for the long-term good of the club. He added: "It's unfortunate that, as the years go on, the players you grow attached to grow older. It is a sad fact of life. It isn't a case of me being brutal, it just happens. Denis Irwin got to a certain age, Roy Keane, Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister retired, Bryan Robson became a manager. In our present squad we have Ryan Giggs who is now getting to 33 — hopefully he can play for us for two or three years because he is such a fit lad."

"But we know that, at some point, he will come to the end. It happens. Because I have been with this club for so long I have had to deal with that situation with many, many players. It maybe gives a false impression of me being ruthless or having to make crucial decisions.It is nothing like that. Most of the time it is just common sense — players come to the end of their careers and it just happens."

Smith goes back to his roots

Sir Alex Ferguson plans to revert Alan Smith back into a striker next season.

Having spent the entire 2005/06 campaign as a makeshift central midfielder, the 25-year-old's season was curtailed in January by an horrific injury against Liverpool.

However, with Rud van Nistelrooy attracting concrete interest from Real Madrid and Sir Alex actively pursuing at least one new midfielder, the fans' favourite is set to go back to his attacking roots next term.

Sir Alex admitted: "We are not too badly off in the forwards department. We are going to convert Alan Smith back into being a forward.

"He will be back in training soon and should be available by the end of August or the beginning of September."

Despite rumours mooting a bid for Spain's Fernando Torres, Sir Alex has not confirmed that he plans to bring in a new striker if van Nistelrooy leaves.

Alan Smith was the surprise face on show as almost the entire United squad trained on Tuesday morning.

The 25-year-old, who will revert to his original role as a striker this season, has been out of action since breaking his leg and dislocating his ankle against Liverpool last January.

Michael Carrick is stalling on a bumper new Ŗ45,000-a-week deal to stay at Spurs. The England midfielder wants to wait and see if Manchester United come back with a new bid. Ietwat omzichtig vertelde Ruud van Nistelrooy waarom hij weg ging van Old Trafford. De spits en coach Alex Ferguson waren uit elkaar gegroeid.

Schokkend is de verklaring niet die Van Nistelrooy gaf tijdens zijn eerste persconferentie in dienst van Real Madrid, maar de dertigjarige Brabander had tot vrijdagavond nooit iets gezegd over zijn reden van vertrek bij Manchester United.

'Mijn relatie met Ferguson kwam ten einde en dat was pijnlijk. Hij heeft een hoop voor mij gedaan, hij wachtte op me terwijl ik geblesseerd was en gaf me daarna de kans om te spelen bij een van de grootste clubs, en hij gaf me zelfvertrouwen. Maar wat is gebeurd, is gebeurd. Een goede relatie kwam ten einde. Dat was heel teleurstellend voor mij.'

Hoe die relatie precies ten einde kwam vertelde de aanvaller niet. Wel gaf hij aan wanneer hij genoeg had van de manager. 'Tijdens de finale om de League Cup besloot ik dat mijn tijd erop zat', blikte Van Nistelrooy terug. Ferguson had de Nederlander op de bank gezet en besloot vanaf dat duel om Louis Saha de voorkeur te geven tot het einde van het seizoen.

'Vanaf dat moment was ik ongelukkig. Het had niets te maken met de club of de fans. Het was de relatie met de manager die stuk was gegaan. Het was het beste om te vertrekken, dacht ik.'

'Ik heb vijf ongelooflijke jaren gehad in Manchester en ik zal mijn tijd daar altijd blijven herinneren, net als de onvoorwaardelijke steun van de fans.' Alleen in de competitie scoorde hij al 97 keer en daarvoor had hij slechts 152 duels voor nodig.

Van Nistelrooy zei zelfs geen wrok te voelen ten opzichte van Ferguson. 'Ik heb nooit de kans gehad om afscheid te nemen van Ferguson, maar daar zal nog genoeg tijd voor zijn. Ik heb een hoop aan hem te danken en dat maakt het zo pijnlijk.'

Manchester United en Tottenham Hotspur zijn het eens over de voorwaarden van een transfer van Michael Carrick. Beide clubs maakten dat vrijdagavond bekend via de eigen clubsites.

Carrick moet zelf nog tot een akkoord komen met Manchester United. De centrale middenvelder moet tevens nog een medische keuring ondergaan. Die staat komende maandag gepland voor de zevenvoudig international. Waarschijnlijk zal hij over een week zijn debuut maken tijdens het Amsterdam Tournament.

'Dit is een transfer die Michael graag wilde maken', reageerde Spurs-manager Martin Jol op de aanstaande overstap van de vrijdag 25 jaar geworden speler. 'We hebben hem alle redenen gegeven waarom hij zou moeten blijven, maar hij heeft gevraagd of hij mocht vertrekken.'

Over de hoogte van de transfersom hebben beide clubs geen mededelingen gedaan, maar naar verluidt zal Man United twintig miljoen euro overmaken aan Tottenham. Carrick stond nog tot medio 2008 onder contract bij The Spurs, die hem twee jaar terug voor vier miljoen euro hadden overgenomen van West Ham United.
