Wayne Rooney en Paul Scholes zijn woensdag in staat van beschuldiging gesteld vanwege de rode kaarten die ze ontvingen tijdens het duel dat Manchester United tegen FC Porto speelde in Amsterdam.

United ging direct in beroep om te voorkomen dat Rooney en Scholes de competitie beginnen met een schorsing voor drie duels. Engelse media speculeren al dat de tuchtcommissie van de Engelse bond (FA) de rode kaarten die scheidsrechter Ruud Bossen gaf, zal omzetten in gele kaarten.

Mocht dat het geval zijn dan ontloopt Rooney een schorsing, terwijl Scholes voor één duel de tribune op moet, omdat hij in het treffen met Porto voor zijn rode kaart ook nog een gele kaart had geīncasseerd, en dus een schorsing krijgt voor twee wedstrijden.

Een eventuele schorsing zal niet gelden voor de competitieopener tegen Fulham, maar voor de daaropvolgende wedstrijd tegen Charlton Athletic (en eventueel die tegen Watford en Tottenham Hotspur).

Manchester United heeft de contracten van Mickaël Silvestre en Ji-Sung Park verlengd. En als het aan Alex Ferguson ligt, blijft Wayne Rooney zijn hele leven bij The Mancunians voetballen.
Rooney staat nog tot de zomer van 2010 onder contract bij Man United. De twintigjarige international wil graag die verbintenis verlengen. 'Het is iets waar David Gill (algemeen directeur, red.) en ik het al over hebben gehad, want we willen allemaal dat Wayne hier een leven lang blijft', verklaarde Ferguson op de website van ManU.

'Hij is een fantastische voetballer, die de energie, het enthousiasme en de wil heeft om aan de top te blijven', aldus Ferguson, wiens woorden door Gill werden bevestigd. 'Het zit in onze plannen om met Wayne te gaan praten, maar we plakken er geen deadline aan vast.'

Park en Silvestre zetten vrijdag al hun handtekening. De Franse verdediger verlengde zijn contract met twee jaar tot medio 2009 en de Zuid-Koreaanse aanvallende middenvelder tekende voor één extra seizoen, tot de zomer van 2010.

Edwin van der Sar heeft er wel oren naar om zijn contract bij Manchester United te verlengen. De 35-jarige doelman lijkt hiermee gehoor te geven aan het voorstel van manager Alex Ferguson, die in juli bekendmaakte de keeper een nieuwe verbintenis te willen geven.

Het huidige contract van Van der Sar loopt aan het einde van dit seizoen af. Ferguson stelde onlangs al voor er een extra jaar aan vast te plakken. 'Ik weet niet hoe lang ik door zal gaan, maar het zou op zijn minst twee jaar moeten zijn', vertelde Van der Sar in Manchester Evening News.

'Dat is het doel en wat er daarna gebeurt, zien we dan wel weer', aldus de Nederlandse recordinternational, die ook al heeft aangeven tot het EK van 2008 door te willen gaan bij Oranje. 'Ik heb het naar mijn zin in Manchester. Het gaat allemaal goed en ik ben gelukkig, dus er is geen reden om aan iets anders te denken.'

Giggs sidelined for three weeks

Ryan Giggs will join Ji-sung Park on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury during United's 3-2 win over Celtic.

Just before kick-off, the club revealed that Park will have surgery on ankle ligaments on Thursday and consequently miss the next three months.

Afterwards, Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Giggs would also be missing for three weeks having tweaked his hamstring as he won United a dubious first half penalty.

Sir Alex Ferguson says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's ability to make an impact from the bench is a rare and invaluable commodity within the game.

One, and probably the best known, of the many hallmarks of Solskjaer's make-up is the incredible knack he has of registering himself as a scoring substitute.

His most famous super-sub appearance came against Bayern Munich in the 1999 European Cup final when he fired an injury-time winner, while the 33-year-old's two goals so far this season have both come after stepping off the bench.

"In all my years as a manager I've never come across a player like Solskjaer who has the ability to come on and make an impact the way he does," revealed Sir Alex.

"I'm not sure why he's so effective - it could be down to his temperament or his nature. He watches the game very closely and concentrates on what's happening on the pitch and I think that gives him an advantage.

"He showed against Celtic what he's made of," added the boss. "Some people might have thought his goal was a simple tap-in, but it wasn't.

"The great thing about it was how he created the goal for himself through his awareness; he showed fantastic goalsense."
