CDA-prominent Hans Hillen haalt hard uit naar D66 en haar fractieleider Dittrich, die de christen-democraten onlangs beschuldigde van 'botte machtspolitiek'. Volgens Hillen echter gedraagt D66 zich, zo pal voor de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen, als een 'dreinend verwend kind: een partij die negen keer zo klein is als het CDA maar wel in alles haar zin wil hebben'.

Hillen hekelt vooral Dittrichs manier om D66 'mooier te maken' door de ander - in dit geval het CDA - als lelijk af te schilderen. 'D66 gaat niet uit van eigen kracht. De partij zit al tien jaar bijna onafgebroken in de regering. GroenLinks en SP zijn groter, maar regeren doen ze niet. Daarom hebben zij veel minder invloed. In wezen heeft D66, zeker gezien zijn geringe omvang, ongelooflijk veel bereikt.'

Hillen wijst op typische Nederlandse vrijzinnigheden als het homohuwelijk en de euthanasiewetgeving, verworvenheden die voor een groot deel op het conto van D66 kunnen worden bijgeschreven. 'Maar het reële gevaar dreigt van volstrekte irrelevantie in de nabije toekomst', aldus het oud-Kamerlid. 'Nu zijn de vijf zetels van D66 nog nodig voor de meerderheid van het kabinet, straks zal de meest waarschijnlijke combinatie CDA/PvdA de partij gewoon chic links laten liggen. En dan is het ineens een heel klein oppositiepartijtje, zonder ministers, zonder aandacht, zonder publiciteit, met een mooi verleden, maar zonder toekomst.'

Orders from Brussels: Spell Christ with a lower-case "c"

It must be getting a little too close for Christmas for the chi-chi crystal palace of the pretentious European Union. Pooh-bahs in Brussels have come up with a new grammar rule for themselves and the Netherlands--making it official that the name "Christ" will soon be written with a lower-case "c". That was the stipulation in an orthography reform published earlier this month in Brussels.

According to the Kath.net agency, the new spelling legislation will also stipulate that the Dutch word for "jews" (joden) be spelled with a capital "J" when referring to nationality and with a lower-case "j" when referring to the religion. The changes will be mandatory in August of 2006. There is no description of the fines offenders will face if they keep right on spelling "Christ" with a capital "C".

The new spelling regulations are coming from the same folk, who include as one of their seat numbers in the august and austere chamber in which they gather to prevaricate on all things politically correct, the number 666.

The European Union hierarchy may have numbered the seat 666, but at last count no one has had the courage to actually claim the seat as their own.

At the European Union, the name of the humble carpenter from Nazareth may be diminished by lower-case spelling, but Javier Solana, The Great will continue to have his name spelled in capital letters.

Solana, a sort of Kofi Annan, European style, is High Representative of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Secretary General of both the European Union and the Western European Union. Note to the media, all of his titles are to be spelled in capital letters.

EU politically correct lockstep seems to be as infectious as bird flu. Across the ocean in faraway Florida, schools are banning Christmas and Easter holidays in response to Muslim demands.

"Demands from the terrorist-linked Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) for an official school recognition of a Muslim Holy Day has resulted in the Hillsborough County School Board banning all religious holidays–Christmas, Good Friday and Easter are off the calendar.

Any parent, whose little angel has been traumatized with nowhere to show off her Christmas pageant wings, will have to perform for the neighbourhood kids out in the garage this year.

The Hillsborugh County School Board and its trustees should be reminded of author Mark Twain’s take on school boards: "In the first place God created idiots. This was just for practice. Then he created school boards."

Meanwhile caving in to the march of the politically correct army will someday lead to the banning of the words "hi" and "hello" on the very likely basis that it may offend somebody who prefers to be greeted with the words, "Assalaam Alaikum".

Almond’s letter claims that I got my facts wrong in my Monday cover story, Orders from Brussels: Spell Christ with a lower-case "c".

The new spelling regulations in that global region, Almond writes, have nothing to do with the European Union.

It wasn’t the EU, but an "official multinational body" that has decreed that the surname of our Saviour should be written without a capital "C" starting in August of 2006.

And those are the new rules--only if you happen to be writing in the Dutch language.

It seems that spelling reforms for Dutch-speakers in the Netherlands, Belgium and Surinam are dictated by something called the "Green Booklet".

As proof of the European Union’s innocence, Almond emailed an attachment for an article he wanted me to read.

Others who disagreed with the cover story noted my sarcasm that European Union boss Javier Solana gets to have his name and titles spelled out in capital letters,

I don’t know much about the "official multinational body" or the "green booklet" that will see to Christ’s name spelt with a small "c" as of next August.

But I do know that an ocean away in a Brussels crystal palace the EU, the United Nations of Europe, gets to regulate on everything right down to crooked bananas.

If it weren’t the original idea of Javier Solana and Company to minimize Christ’s name with a lower-case "c", it would be one of the few areas where the EU did not involve itself in regulating.

Indeed, the European Union now runs most of Europe.

If Solana wants to do something worthwhile, he could start by regulating the "official multinational body" and the "green booklet", and in so doing save the name of the Saviour.

Meanwhile, Mr. Almond, in true European Union fashion, your request is denied.
