High alert

A section of a city centre street in Edinburgh was closed because of gale damage.

Part of a roof from a derelict building was reported to have been blown into McDonald Road, off Leith Walk.

Ferry sailings were being disrupted and power company engineers were on high alert in case cables were damaged.

ScottishPower suspended all regular maintenance work and brought in extra staff to local engineering centres.
