Luca Toni steps back into the Stadio Barbera for the first time since leaving Palermo in the summer and admits he’s concerned about the reception he’ll receive.

“I spent two wonderful years at Palermo and received a great deal from the people, but I also think I gave them a lot too. I have no desire for revenge, quite the opposite, as finally the circumstances surrounding my move are becoming clear. The club blamed me, but it turned out to be a good deal for all concerned.”

The striker scored 50 League goals in two seasons for the club, but was sold to Fiorentina for £7m in the summer after patron Massimo Zamparini accused him of demanding an unreasonable pay rise.

Toni will now return to the Sicilian city when Italy play Slovenia in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier.

“I left many friends here and can’t wait to see them again. I would love to receive only applause this weekend, but even if there are any insults then I won’t let them get to me and I doubt Coach Marcello Lippi would take that into account either.”

The 27-year-old scored a hat-trick in the 4-1 win over Belarus and is the firm favourite to take the centre-forward role in Lippi’s World Cup plans.

“I have been a part of this squad for some time now, but you can never tell in football and there are great strikers out there like Cristiano Lucarelli and Emiliano Bonazzoli,” he noted. “My dream is to play in the tournament in Germany and I’ll do everything I can with Fiorentina to earn my place.”

Milan consider San Siro exit

Adriano Galliani has made the shock revelation that Milan are considering leaving the San Siro.

The Rossoneri have occupied the famous Giuseppe Meazza stadium since 1926 and Vice-President Galliani believes that the time is right to start thinking of a change.

“Our stadium is among the best in Italy,” said Galliani. “The pitch is magnificent, you have a good view from the stands, the majority of fans don't get wet if it rains and it is easy to get to.

“But the first level was built in 1926 and sharing with Internazionale isn't easy. Inter's directors have different ideas to us and so maybe it is time to think of two new stadiums for the city of Milan.”

Milan called five different places ‘home’ after forming in 1899, before they switched to the 80,000 capacity San Siro.

And though League chief Galliani is full of praise for the stadium, he is less complimentary about the rest of the stadia in the country – much of which was redeveloped for the 1990 World Cup.

“The error of Italia ‘90 was developing existing stadiums or building new ones with athletic tracks. That was how we lost a historic opportunity,” he continued.

“All the club Presidents agree with my view that the fall in attendances is without doubt related to stadiums that are obsolete and not designed for football.

“You have a bad view and if it rains you get soaked, as happened to 5,000 Livorno fans at Florence on Sunday who will have caught colds after watching the match in the pouring rain. We can't go on like this.”

And not one to simply criticise without a solution, Galliani suggests that the latest crop of stadia in Germany – much of which have been built for next year’s World Cup – are the example to follow.

“The way forward is to build new stadiums because the majority of the current ones are neither savable or able to be restructured,” he said.

“The Germans told me that they sell an average of 30,000 litres of beer for each game. In our stadiums you can't even get a cup of water!

“It's obvious that as long as the stadiums are like this people will prefer to watch the game on television rather than go to the match.”

Chiellini sick of Juve bench

Giorgio Chiellini has warned Juventus that he’s looking for a move to Roma if he doesn’t get more first team football.

“I really can’t stand for the fact we’ve played eight games between Serie A and the Champions League, yet I haven’t played a single minute of football with a Juve jersey,” slammed the defender.

“I knew I’d have to wait for my turn and that I am still very young, but I have a desire to play that may take me elsewhere. I can only thank Claudio Gentile and the Under-21 side for giving me the chance to prove my worth. If the situation doesn’t change, then I’ll ask to be sold.”

The 21-year-old full-back impressed last term at Fiorentina, scoring three goals in 37 Serie A appearances and doing enough to earn five caps for the senior Azzurri squad.

However, since his move to Turin in the summer, he has remained firmly rooted to the bench – or even the stands – and returned to the less hallowed Under-21 international line-up. This situation will almost certainly see him drop out of the 2006 World Cup squad contenders.

“Fabio Capello doesn’t talk to me, but that’s just the way he is,” continued the furious defender in the ‘Corriere dello Sport Stadio.’ “I can only assume the fault is mine if I haven’t convinced him of my potential up until this point. Of course Gianluca Zambrotta is the first choice for that role, but I thought that with the squad rotation I might get my chance eventually.”

There is a light at the end of the tunnel for Chiellini, as he was very close to a summer switch to Roma and that move could be completed in the January transfer window.

“I would love to join Roma. I do have a few regrets that I didn’t go to the Giallorossi in the first place, seeing how things are going at Juve, but it wasn’t my choice.”

Messina to name stadium after Scoglio

More than 7,000 people attended Franco Scoglio’s funeral this week and his home town of Messina has announced plans to name the stadium after the Coach.

“I don’t think there will be any obstacles to this retitling of the Stadio San Filippo,” explained local Mayor Umberto Bonanno. “It is a request put forward by the entire city.”

The 64-year-old died of a heart attack during a live television debate with current Genoa patron Enrico Preziosi on Monday evening.

The casket was saluted by over 7,000 Genoa supporters in the city on Thursday and it was taken to Messina’s old Stadio Celeste for one last lap of honour round the field, as fans chanted Il Professore’s name.

Scoglio was a legendary figure in Italian football, as he took his beloved Genoa to promotion in the late 1980s. In recent years Scoglio - known as Il Professore - had been heavily involved in African football and Coached both the Tunisian and Libyan national sides.

He returned to Genoa in February 2001, leaving Tunisia on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup, rescuing the club from relegation.

His other experiences in Italy were at Reggina, Messina, Bologna, Udinese, Lucchese, Pescara, Torino, Cosenza, Ancona and most recently Napoli, interspersed with regular appearances as a television pundit.

Cassano snubs Roma extension?

Antonio Cassano has rejected Roma’s offer of a new two-year deal, according to reports in the Italian capital this evening.

Stories in the peninsula on Monday night claim that the starlet has snubbed the club’s offer of an extension.

Roma are believed to have tabled a two-year deal, worth £2.5m a season, for the youngster to add his signature to.

However, Cassano has allegedly rejected the proposal as he is looking for a five-year agreement instead.

Talks are now set to continue given the problematic state of affairs regarding the player’s current contractual status.

The 23-year-old is only tied to the outfit until June 2006, meaning that he could leave on a free transfer in the summer if he doesn’t agree terms with the Stadio Olimpico outfit.

Cassano was heavily linked with a move to Juventus in the summer, but remained after no transfer was finalised.

The former Bari starlet is also understood to be a target for both Milan and Internazionale.

There is the possibility that Cassano could be frozen out of the Roma squad if he doesn’t come to some sort of agreement.

That would obviously affect his chances of making the World Cup squad, which would be a massive blow according to Paolo Rossi.

"Out of Alex Del Piero and Cassano, I would undoubtedly take the latter to Germany," the 1982 World Cup hero stated.

"However, he may encounter some difficulties in getting picked if he can’t resolve his contract situation."

Meanwhile, Roma will return to training on Tuesday ahead of Sunday’s trip to little Empoli.

Inter prepare Salgado bid

Inter are now in pole position to sign Michel Salgado from Real Madrid, according to reports in Italy.

The Spaniard was being heavily linked with a January move to Juventus, but the Nerazzurri are the new favourites to land the defender.

Juve no longer seem to need another right-back, given the successful transformation of Manuele Blasi from a midfielder into a full-back.

While Inter do need another player in that position as they only have Javier Zanetti in that role – who is currently injured.

Whispers in the peninsula suggest that agent Ernesto Bronzetti has already commenced talks between the two clubs.

Real have previously dismissed claims of a Salgado exit even though they will complete the capture of Brazilian wing-back Cicinho in the New Year.

Salgado, 31, could become the fifth Real player to move to Inter in recent times after the captures of Esteban Cambiasso, Santiago Solari, Walter Samuel and Luis Figo.

The Madrid-based stopper has also been associated with a possible move to Manchester United.

Nesta out for a month

Milan have been dealt a massive blow with the confirmation that Alessandro Nesta will be sidelined for the next four weeks.

The stopper has picked up ligament damage in his left hand and will require surgery to resolve the problem.

Nesta will go under the knife on Wednesday and will subsequently be out of action for the next month.

He will therefore be unavailable for the Week 10 Scudetto showdown against Juventus at the end of October.

The Italian international is likely to be ruled out for five Serie A matches and two Champions League ties.

Boss Carlo Ancelotti will now be forced to stick with a central defensive pairing of Jaap Stam and Paolo Maldini.

His other rearguard options include veteran stopper Billy Costacurta, now 39, and Dario Simic.

Maduro catches Juventus eye

Italian champions Juventus are reportedly monitoring the performances of Ajax youngster Hedwiges Maduro.

Transfer guru Luciano Moggi has been impressed with the 20-year-old, who has already been likened to Edgar Davids and Frank Rijkaard in his homeland.

Moggi is understood to have sent scout Franco Ceravolo to the Czech Republic – Holland tie last week to watch the player.

Holland won the game 2-0 and Maduro underlined his potential with a powerful performance in the World Cup clash.

The youngster, who should appear at the German Finals next year, is contracted to the Dutch giants until 2008 and currently earns just £200,000 a season.

Het loopt gewoon niet bij Napoli, de trainer zit op het verkeerde spoor. Fantastisch dat Napoli nog geen wedstrijd verloren heeft, maar ze winnen ook veel te weinig. De verdediging geeft vrijwel niks weg maar is dermate druk bezet dat ze voorin vaak net die ene man te kort komen als afleding, speler om te kaatsen, het gat te trekken, een rebound te pakken of wat dan ook.

Beter kunnen ze er vol invliegen, dan verlies je misschien een keer een wedstrijd, maar win je er veel meer en haal je gewoon meer punten per wedstrijd. Want zo is het meer een tactiek voor een 2 punten per gewonnen wedstrijd systeem en dat is al van de vorige eeuw
