Britain says it will pay compensation for injuries and damage to buildings incurred when its army stormed a police station in a southern Iraqi city last month to free two British soldiers.
British armoured vehicles smashed through the walls of the police station in Basra on Sept. 19 in a successful bid to rescue the pair, who had been arrested by Iraqi police and handed over to a militia.
Several Iraqis died in the attack and the street protests that followed, as crowd members assaulted British troops with Molotov cocktails and other weapons.
“We regret the incidents that took place in Basra on 19 September 2005 at the Serious Crimes Unit. We also regret the casualties on both sides and the material damage to public facilities,” the British consulate and Basra city council said in a joint statement released Tuesday.
“The British Government is prepared to pay valid claims for compensation for casualties and material damage in the well-established manner.”
The British military said its troops only stormed the police station after coming under attack by a crowd and only because it feared for the lives of the two Special Forces soldiers, who were working undercover when arrested.
Basra authorities had refused to co-operate with Britain after the incident and suspended joint patrols between local police and the British army, demanding an apology and compensation.
The statement issued Tuesday said that “frank dialogue” between representatives for the local government and Britain was “key to co-operation in regard to the reconstruction of Basra and in making the necessary security arrangements for achieving the democratic process in Iraq.”

The senior military police investigator in Iraq has been found dead at the British base in Basra, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.
Captain Ken Masters was discovered in his accommodation in Waterloo Lines in southern Iraq on Saturday.
The MoD said an inquiry was under way but the circumstances were not regarded as suspicious.
Captain Masters, who was 40 and married with two children, had served with the Royal Military Police since 1981.
