Originally written as a poem by a Jewish schoolteacher named Abel Meeropol , it tried to evoke the horror of lynching, initially by its lyrics, but later on by its haunting music as well, also composed by Meeropol. Even though never really proliferated herself as a political singer before 1939, and the black civil rights movement would still take several years to really get off the ground, she decided to add it to her repertoire anyway, after Barney Josefson, founder of the integrated New York club Café Society where she performed, had asked Meeropol to play it for her on piano. It was the measures that Josefson took that made the song exquisitely powerful – every time performed it, the personnel would cease their activities, the lights would be dimmed except for a spotlight on ; and every time after the song had ended, she would walk off-stage with no bow, nor any encores. Word of mouth recommendations soon turned her rendition of the poem into something legendary, putting a focus on the word ‘swinging’ – which many whites thought was the African-American’s main asset in those days, fulfilling the stereotype of the black man as a happy, swinging, music-loving and smiling caricature. By putting it in the context of a hanging, she stunned friend and foe alike, including her manager John Hammond; who on his part had advised against her use of as a protest song. That was also the reason she had to go to another record label other than her regular one in order to record it. The song was an instant hit however, and would become one of the most iconic protest songs in black music history.
