The request for a hearing follows previous requests for President Bush to release FEMA's California earthquake recovery plan.
Bijna ongelooflijk om voorstellen. Scientists: Natural Disasters Becoming More Commonquote:Op donderdag 20 oktober 2005 11:19 schreef Monidique het volgende:

Men meet er meer omdat er meer seismografen geplaatst worden, aldus datzelfde U.S. Geological Survey: "As more and more seismographs are installed in the world, more earthquakes can be and have been located. However, the number of large earthquakes (magnitude 6.0 and greater) have stayed relatively constant."
...quote:Earth might seem like a more active and dangerous place than ever, given the constant media reports of multiple natural disasters recently. But a broader view reveals that it's not just Mother Nature who's changed, but we humans.
...quote:According to the EM-DAT, the total natural disasters reported each year has been steadily increasing in recent decades, from 78 in 1970 to 348 in 2004.
Guha-Sapir said that a portion of that increase is artificial, due in part to better media reports and advances in communications. Another reason is that beginning in the 1980s, agencies like CRED and the US Agency for International Development (USAID) began actively looking for natural disasters.
"Like in medicine, if you go out into a village and look for cases you find much more than if you just sit back and let people come to you when they're sick," Guha-Sapir said.
However, about two-thirds of the increase is real and the result of rises in so-called hydro-meteorological disasters, Guha-Sapir said. These disasters include droughts, tsunamis, hurricanes, typhoons and floods and have been increasing over the past 25 years. In 1980, there were only about 100 such disasters reported per year but that number has risen to over 300 a year since 2000.
Als je een stijging van 20.000 naar 30.000 bevingen 'steady' noemt, ok.quote:In contrast, natural geologic disasters, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides and avalanches have remained steady in recent decades

Two groups of long finned pilot whales beached themselves near Marion Bay on the southern island state of Tasmania, according to Liz Wren, a spokeswoman for the state's parks and wildlife service.

* There 's going to be an eruption in the northwest with the volcanoes, within six months.

When officials began taking applications in Palm Beach County, people actually ran to get in line, some pushing baby carriages.
For the next few days, the state of Florida is offering food money to low-income residents hit hard by Hurricane Wilma. What's striking is these are people who normally aren't considered poor enough to qualify for food stamps but who now are in serious trouble.

NBC News weatherman Al Roker said on the “Today” show Wednesday that the front posed a “slight risk” of severe weather, including tornadoes, from the Carolinas to New York State.

Thirty-five tornadoes were reported in all.
