Major quake strikes off coast of Northern California
A major earthquake struck about 80 miles off the coast of Northern California on Tuesday night, prompting a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast.
The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. about 90 miles west southwest of the coastal community of Crescent City, according to the U.S. Geological Survey Web site.
A tsunami warning is in effect from the California-Mexico border all the way north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.
Residents were being evacuated from low-lying areas of Crescent City, KCBS radio reported.

A tsunami bulletin has been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. No destructive Pacific-wide tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.
However, earthquakes of this size sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within a hundred kilometers of the earthquake epicenter. Authorities in the region of the epicenter should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action.

At Santa Barbara, Ward calculates, the wave height would be 6.5 feet, and smaller waves would crash against the shore as far south as the tip of Baja California.
"These calculations are still rough," Ward concedes, "but they do indicate a level of danger that needs to be considered."

Storm in een glas water Ze hadden voor een half uur een "Tsunami Warning" afgekondigd, maar het was al snel duidelijk dat het type bewegingen van deze aardbeving niet voor een tsunami kon zorgen.

Staat niet eens (meer) prominent op CNN, het is ook een " moderate" quake. Lijkt dus heisa m weinig, hoewel je nooit weer of dit een vorobode van iets is natuurlijk.
