Paul Gascoigne staat voor een nieuw avontuur. De voormalige Engelse vedette gaat als coach aan de slag bij het Portugese Algarve United, dat pas één jaar bestaat maar grote plannen heeft.

De 38-jarige Engelsman moet de club verder omhoog helpen, uiteindelijk tot aan de Superliga. Algarve United promoveerde afgelopen seizoen uit de laagste klasse in Portugal komt dit seizoen uit in de eerste divisie van het district Faro (vijfde niveau in Portugal).

Voor Gascoigne is het niet zijn eerste klus als trainer. In China was hij al eens player/coach bij Gansu Tianma en in eigen land leidde hij Boston United. De excentrieke Brit stapte op omdat hij een toptrainer wilde worden en zich daar volledig op wilde toeleggen.

In de tussentijd liet Gascoigne weten voortaan als G8 door het leven te willen gaan. De G komt van zijn achternaam, het getal acht staat voor zijn rugnummer. 'Met mijn Geordie-accent klinkt het een beetje als great.'

Guus Hiddink ontvangt eredocoraat in Z-Korea

Guus Hiddink heeft er weer een onderscheiding bij gekregen in Zuid-Korea. De voormalig bondscoach ontving vrijdagochtend op de Korea University een eredoctoraat vanwege zijn verdiensten voor sport, vriendschap en motivatie.

De onderscheiding is een zeer speciale, Hiddink is pas de tweede persoon die deze incasseert. Woensdag had PSV nog een oefenduel gevoetbald tegen een gelegenheidsteam dat speelde in naam van de honderdjarige Korea University.

Met Hiddink werd ook Bum-Kun Cha gehuldigd. De voormalig international en bondscoach kreeg een eredoctoraat vanwege zijn verdiensten als voetballer.

Vieri: 'Ik wilde niet weg bij Internazionale'

Christian Vieri wilde helemaal niet weg bij Internazionale, verklaarde hij donderdag. De 32-jarige spits verhuisde onlangs van Inter naar AC Milan, nadat de nerazzuri zijn doorlopende contract met negen miljoen euro hadden afgekocht.

'Het was niet mijn keuze om Inter te verlaten', bekende Vieri, die zes jaar voor Inter speelde. 'Ik weet niet waarom ze die beslissing hebben genomen. Maar ik kon niet blijven bij een ploeg waar ik niet gewenst was.'

'Daarna was het niet meer dan juist om naar de sterkst mogelijke club te gaan.' Vieri tekende bij de aartsrivaal van Inter een contract voor twee seizoenen. 'Ik hoop eindelijk iets te winnen', verklaarde Bobo cynisch. Met Internazionale pakte hij geen enkele echt grote prijs zoals de landstitel of de Champions League. 'Ik ben gelukkig hier.'

Foutieve incasso shirts aktie

Gisterenavond is de incasso voor de shirtsaktie van 55 euro door de bank foutief uitgevoerd. In plaats van 55 euro te incasseren is er 55 euro gestort bij iedereen die de shirts heeft besteld.

De bank zal deze fout zo spoedig mogelijk herstellen. De correcte incasso zal spoedig worden doorgevoerd.

Reginaldo is in het harnas gestorven. De 34-jarige speler van Clube de Regatas Batateira stortte in nadat hij in de strafschoppenserie in het duel met Beira-Río de winnende penalty had benut.
De Braziliaan werd nog in allerijl naar het ziekenhuis vervoerd maar in de ambulance bleken de reanimatiepogingen tevergeefs. Een hartinfarct werd hem fataal.

Riquelme denkt aan stoppen bij WK-succes

Het WK van volgend jaar in Duitsland heeft een hoop spelers gestimuleerd na te denken over hun toekomst. Nadat Ronaldo aangaf na het toernooi ruimte te maken voor jonge spelers bij Brazilië, stopt Juan Roman Riquelme er mogelijk helemaal mee.
'Als ik het wereldkampioenschap win, dan weet ik eerlijk gezegd niet of ik wel doorga met voetballen', bekende de 28-jarige spelmaker van Argentinië tegenover de Argentijnse zender Todo Noticias.

Riquelme lijkt onder bondscoach José Pekerman de onbetwiste leider van de Zuid-Amerikanen. In het toernooi om de Confederations Cup speelde de introverte nummer 10 sterk, scoorde hij drie keer en moest hij alleen Adriano voor zich dulden in het MVP-klassement.

Argentinië verloor in de finale van Brazilië maar liet in de aanloop naar de eindstrijd mooi voetbal zien. 'Argentinië gaat een goed WK spelen en hopelijk blijven we ons verbeteren. Het is aan ons om de verantwoordelijk te nemen. Iedereen wil van ons winnen. Laten we hopen dat we in Duitsland het beste uit onszelf halen.'

Riquelme kende afgelopen seizoen zijn beste jaar sinds hij Boca Juniors verliet en naar Europa verhuisde. Hij nam Villarreal bij de hand en leidde de kleine club met vijftien doelpunten naar de derde plaats in de Primera División, waardoor het voorronde Champions League mag spelen.

Manchester United's difficult pre-season continues after jokers altered a huge sign at Old Trafford, turning it into a four-letter word.

The impressive neon construction - which sits at the top of the stadium, high above the statue of Sir Matt Busby - usually spells out the club's name.

But somehow pranksters managed to change it to reveal the obscenity.

United officials were alerted to the embarrassing situation by journalists at the Manchester Evening News and acted quickly to restore the sign to normal.

A club spokeswoman dismissed suggestions fans angry at the takeover by the Glazers were responsible.

She said: "We have had contractors in doing work on the stadium. It seems someone has messed with plugs at the back of the lights as a prank.

"We would like to apologise to anyone that took offence - the sign now proudly says Manchester United again."

Os dispensados já regressaram ao Porto, enquanto os restantes elementos cumprem amanhã o último jogo no estágio holandês, com o Brugge.

«Bomfim é um n.º 10 que pode jogar nas alas. Acontece que temos vários jogadores para a esquerda e para a direita e diversas soluções para n.º 10, como Diego, Lisandro, Jorginho e até o Postiga, por isso decidimos que tinha de ser ele a sair.
Para o lugar desempenhado por Areias temos Nuno Valente e Leandro, que em minha opinião são melhores defesas. Foi uma decisão complicada, até porque ele é sócio do clube e vive o FC Porto de forma muito especial. Sinto que tem o clube no coração.
Sandro é um médio defensivo que teve de competir com Raul Meireles, Paulo Assunção e até com Lucho e Bosingwa, que podem cumprir esse papel. Acabou por ser ele o escolhido para deixar o plantel.
Depois da partida de Leo Lima e das decisões que tomámos hoje, já saíram quatro jogadores do grupo de trabalho. Considero que a equipa está fechada. Uma das tarefas de um treinador é tomar decisões. Inter Milan have cancelled their four game pre-season tour of England because of safety fears in the wake of the London bombings.
The Italian club were due to play Portsmouth, Leicester, Norwich and Crystal Palace in July.

"Football takes a step back because of increasing serious events which touch the sensitivity of everyone," said a statement on the Inter website.

"For this reason, and given the situation, we have decided to cancel."

The Serie A outfit added they did not want to "add to the activities of the emergency forces there, who are already very busy at this time".

However, Leicester City chief executive Tim Davis said the Foxes would be seeking substantial damages from Inter.

"We are extremely disappointed in the actions of Inter Milan," he said.

"We will be contacting the Football Association and Uefa and we shall also be seeking substantial damages from Inter.

"The club has already incurred substantial costs in preparing for the fixture and we had expected a crowd of up to 30,000 supporters - all of whom will be very upset by Inter's late withdrawal."

The club has already said it would refund fans who have bought tickets.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini and club president had insisted on Friday that the tour would go ahead.

Mancini had stated that only one of Inter's matches - at Palace - was in London but the continuing events in the English capital have forced Inter into a change of mind.

Norwich City's chief executive Neil Doncaster described Inter's decision as hugely disappointing and wrong.

He said that for Inter to refuse to travel simply because of the threat of terrorism was giving into the terrorists.

And London's mayor Ken Livingstone was also scathing: "I think that it is a very silly thing to do because it is playing the terrorists' game. They want to change the way we live.

"The terrorists, I am sure, will be celebrating their decision. The idea there might not be an attack back home in Milan, that they are more safe there than here, is a complete illusion.

"The truth is, as we have seen from the horrifying news from Egypt, nowhere in the world is safe."
