Naturally there s the requisite dose of sleazing on board right from the very start when Kim Peers requires a motherlode of lovin', as does June⤦ on Fast Food Messiahs. Clarke also throws in a surprises which hark back to his post-punk roots on tracks such as GDX's version of 'This Corrosion' (originally by iconic goth band the Sisters Of Mercy), or the closing punk-funk of New Yorkers Silicone Soul asking a question relevant to many who ve taken to the dancefloor as Clarke performs a peak-time DJ set''Who Needs Sleep Tonight?'
Clarke's take on techno is no less refreshing. Over 26 tracks he journeys through a huge variety of styles, embracing the dark humour of Detroit's booty-tek but never losing sight of a thread of crunching four-to-the-floor dynamism. The pace seldom lets up from the opening demands by Underground Resistance's Mad Mike Banks to'find your strength in the sound and make your transition'to the echoing outer space robot fade-out of AJ McGhee's 'Octapie' at the CD's close. Along the way DJ Rush asks us to '⤦ Me All Night Long', DJ Funk wants you to 'Put Yo Back N 2 It'and there's even a track from 1980 by Japanese electronic legend Ryuchi Sakamoto. All income from the compilation will be donated to on orphanage in Indonesia. This way the money will not be subject to bureaucracy and go directly to helping children.

"On this unmixed compilation you can find some beautiful sophisticated minimal stuff".

The following tracks caught my attention: Hendrix Schwarz & Freestyle man with a track entitled Jena, containing deep twinkling atmosphere done with piano, given some extra flow with the bass line. Finished off with great delays and reverbs. Luciano - Hijos del Kaos: Soft kicks, tide drums sections, and a very warm intense bass line. Märtini Brös - Laboratory: He has been giving it a bit more funk with this electro stylish groovy bass line. The hypnotic synths in the background are making it complete. Dirt Crew - Let's Get It Done: the bassline has got the funk and the groove. Sascha Funke - Tears On My Pillow: Minimal Detroit influenced house. Classic drums, and melancolic strings.

This great initiative of Jay Haze will not only benefit musical collection, it will fully support the victims of the tsunami.

Weer een nieuw exportproduct uit Berlijn. Fenin sluimert al acht jaar in de schemering met releases op Echochord, Meteosound en Textone, maar het is pas met dit debuutalbum op T. Raumschmieres Shitkatapult-label dat Fenin een betekenisvolle stap voorwaarts zet.

Fenin mixt dub met minimale techno, maar dan niet zoals we dat bijvoorbeeld van Basic Channel gewoon zijn. De klemtoon ligt hier op digitale dub, niet op minimale techno. Grounded bevat zowel pure reggaesongs die wat naar On-U-Sound neigen (‘No C.IA’, ‘Interlude’) als ambient-minimal zoals we die ook wel eens bij Markus Guentner en andere Kompakt-onderdanen vinden (‘South’). Beloftevol, maar nog niet helemaal geperfectioneerd.

Fenin speelt op 23 juni samen met Apparat en Peter Grummich op de Shitkatapult-labelnight in de MS Stubnitz in Rotterdam.

Richie Hawtin has been working on his next release, DE9: Transitions at his studio in Berlin. With the use of new recording advances and automation techniques, Hawtin uses his new found freedom to expose a new area of the mix, that of the "transition."

This is the next project in the DE9 series that started with Decks, EFX & 909 (1999) and was followed by DE9: Closer to the Edit (2001).

DE9: Transitions blows the idea of the conventional DJ mix out of the water and not only explores the traditional musical "transition" in time & amplitude (X and Y) of sound, but also in the depth (Z) of space & perception, opening up the DJ mix for the first time into a fully encompassing, surround sound (5.1) environment.

DE9: Transitions has been from start to end, constructed, and composed to be a completely immersive experience, allowing you, the listener, to get further into the heart of it all... and this time, even closer to the edit.

To fully maximize the realization of this concept, DE9: Transitions will be released in September 2005 (novamute/Minus) on CD & DVD, including both stereo and 5.1 surround sound versions, as well as high resolution audio versions and accompanying visuals.

Richie Hawtin will preview DE9: Transitions in 5.1 surround sound for the first time at Sonar, Barcelona (June 16 -18, 2005).

De forcept series lijken wel een stuk minder experimenteel van karakter te zijn dan de concept series, niet dat dit uitmaakt want Forcept 2 is al een enorme monster minimal hit geworden!!

The original series (1996) of 12 monthly twelve-inch singles comprised of 24 tracks, strictly limited to 2000 copies per release, was a timely musical emission of that moment. Before the compiled CD release of Concept 1 96:CD in February 1998, Thomas Brinkmann (Cologne, Germany) visited Windsor to play Hawtin some of his "Variations" of Concept 1. The results unfolded a new structure from the original material, exposing a new side of Hawtin's compositions.
Explaining his custom system to produce the Concept 1 Variations, Brinkmann notes, "I used a self-made turntable with 30 kilo plate, and two SME 309 Tone Arms utilizing both Ortofon and Van den Hul moving-coil pickups." Using the original Concept 1 records on his two-arm turntable, Thomas found unheard dynamics within these recordings. Even the imperfections of the vinyl pressing process find new character within his Variations. "The interventions with the actual vinyl are few: I slowed down the speed of the record and used the left pickup (arm) for the left channel, and the right pickup (arm) for the right channel. I found out that the use of different pickup systems for both channels is important for the sound," Brinkmann adds. "It's possible to hear a melodic displacement between the channels."

Re-thinking the depth of sound, Thomas said, "I don't believe in creativity, but in sensibility. We have to invent the things to make them visible or audible, even though they had been there before, only invisible and inaudible." Through his unique angle of attention, Thomas has allowed us to hear what he hears, something that was there but unheard until now. Summing up his technique, Thomas mentions, "With a little intervention and displacement of elements, the Concepts are sounding different. The same information they had before, but two times present. Like the idea of cloning and twins: still Richie's DNA with a little mutation. A different groove."


In the spirit of MINUS, Thomas has used an untraditional technique based on theories of alternative listening and experimentation to produce an image of difference. A scientific yet natural way of revealing the complexity of what was originally deemed minimal.
