The Fifties
The U-461 Submarine of the former Baltic Red Flag Fleet was listed as part of a project NATO 651 the JULIETT Class.Towards the end of the fifties this type of Submarine was designed specially to encounter the fleet of US-Aircraftcarriers.72 JULIETT,S were planned to be built, but only 16 actually went into service. The rest was scrapped as part of a new agreement to scrap nuclear driven submarines.
The Sixties
The U-461 was built in the beginning of the Sixties and actually went into service with the Navy in 1965.It then carried out exercises and patroled with live ammunition in the area of the North Atlantic.Units of the 35th Submarine Division carried out many long patrols which took them far away from their home bases, and at that time the then known 90 days at sea record was broken many many times. The submarines of the JULIETT-class carried 4 Inter Continental Balastic Missiles (I.C.B.M.) of the schiff-schiff Class each situated in it,s own chamber. To firing of the missiles was risky and dangerous task the because the submarine first needs to dive before it can carry out the firing
The Seventies
In the Seventies it,s sea operations was mainly based on the snorkel effect. The submarine dived approximately 8 meters deep and used it,s diesel motors working with air from the snorkel system on board. The officers and sailors from the Russian Nuclear Submarines usually smiled when the crew from JULIETT climbed out of their tower looking dirty, oily and sweaty. No comparision to the short sleeves office like atmosphere in the Nuclear Submarines.
The Eighties
In the beginning of the Eighties, the submarines of the JULIETT class were provisionally put out of service, but a few years later in 1985 returned to service. It was possible to have up to 6 submarines with the Baltic Red Flag Fleet, and acording to the NATO scout planes, there was 4 in active duty and 2 are in reserve status or standby. After a certain time the submarines are exchanged. Since 1988 the JULIETT genreally found it,s self in the reserve status.
