U2 magnificent in Anaheim
Review: Having radically restructured its set, U2 proved even more potent at the Pond than at its tour kickoff in San Diego. So why no encore?

By BEN WENER
The Orange County Register

There are so many memorable moments from U2’s magnificent opener at Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim on Friday night worth discussing it seems odd to focus first on something that actually didn’t happen. Yet it’s surely what everyone who was there is still wondering: Where was the encore?

In one respect, the question needn’t be raised: This show ended as presumably all will on this tour, with the reinvigorated Irishmen stomping past the beefed-up glam-rock-for-God of "All Because of You," then slowing to a supernal close with their unplugged take on "Yahweh" and the revived hymn "40."

Bono dedicated that last piece to Pope John Paul II, who was on his deathbed at that hour. "Tonight we sing this for the Holy Father, a friend to the world’s poor," he said as the Edge (having swapped instruments with Adam Clayton) strummed the song’s familiar bass line.

Then he removed his crucifix, kissed it, hung it from his microphone stand and began the group’s one-by-one recessional from the stage.

That would havemade for a supremely satisfying finish to this two-hour deluge of emotion, which began aggressively and continued to gain potency and momentum, topping the pace and energy of Monday’s Vertigo 2005 Tour kickoff in San Diego.

If only the house lights had come up immediately after the band exited. Instead, the arena remained dark for what felt like five minutes. It may have been less, but time tends to stand still during such interminable pauses – and once 30 seconds passes without any crew emerging to tear down gear, the audience justifiably expects it will hear at least one more song.

Not surprisingly, the abrupt that’s-all-folks drew boos as loud as the cheers that preceded it.

So what happened? Was an 11 p.m. curfew strictly imposed? That’s possible, and logical, but also dubious; I’ve seen more than a few bashes here run a half-hour later than that, and I can’t imagine any Pond officials complaining if U2 had wanted to do another 10 minutes.

Did the band decide this particular crowd didn’t merit a slight return? That seems impossible. These fans were arguably more overcome than those on hand in San Diego, enthusiastically embracing not just staples in the set list but also Bono’s push for African aid and awareness and various other social statements – an unusual move from a region known to shout disapproval at rockers who make political asides.

Could it be, then – and this is what I think really happened – that the radical but rewarding rearrangement of the show’s musical segments, just three gigs in, threw the band for a loop?

Perhaps you, too, noticed U2’s main set seemed due to stop with "Vertigo," this night pushed back in the running order (more on that in a moment). Clayton and the Edge had unstrapped their axes, and Bono, having just sung "Hello, hello … goodbye," had given the guitarist acongratulatory hug. (I believe he muttered a deserved "Well done, gentlemen" as the number ended.)

Then came a brief huddle, drummer Larry Mullen Jr. gave a let’s-keep-going indication – and on they went into "All Because of You."

In that sense, we got our encore – and only one less song than San Diego scored at either of its shows. Yet the expectations that intensely mounted in those minutes in the dark couldn’t help but lead to a crushing letdown. Though it’s still very early in this international trek, here was the moment when U2 could have delivered that extra something, a bonus to really make those hundreds of dollars (thousands, even) that devotees doled out for tickets seem worth every cent.

And the delayed house lights suggest U2 was considering offering more, which must have had in-the-know types aflutter. After all, nearly everything in the show had been shifted.

For instance, the strikingly militant midsection – "Love and Peace or Else" into "Sunday Bloody Sunday" into "Bullet the Blue Sky" without pause, followed by the broodingly beautiful "Running to Stand Still" and a visual reminder of universal human rights – was now at the beginning, after each member entered by scoping out the crowd with spotlights while lapping the "elipse" (what the loop that encircles the stage is being called).

Rather than teasing with "Boy" oldies before getting to the meat of the message, this switch instantly asserted the evening’s themes: equality for everyone, don’t turn a blind eye to suffering, peace now, love is all you need.

The insertion of a robust "I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For" swiftly carried the substance of that bold start into the next, unchanged segment: a still-spectral "New Year’s Day" followed by a stronger "Miracle Drug" and this evening’s most moving moment, "Sometimes You Can’t Make It on Your Own."

With Bono trading swaggering poses for believable introspection, this was one of those rare times when the outsized superstar has appeared unguarded, his soul bared as he sang a warts-and-all tribute to his late father: "And it’s you when I look in the mirror / And it’s you when I don’t pick up the phone."

Taking off again, "Beautiful Day" served as the entrance to a portion that so far has led U2’s encore: "Pride (In the Name of Love)," the crowd chanting as if at a soccer match while Bono recited the same short speech about Martin Luther King he debuted Monday; "Where the Streets Have No Name," more stirring and urgent than it’s been in years; and "One," before which Bono urged the audience to get out cell phones to text-message for information about the One Campaign (also at www.one.org), designed to enlist a million Americans for African relief work.

"Get our medicine out there, get our smarts out there," he implored. "That’s the proving ground now. It might have been civil rights in America in the ’60s, but it’s Africa now."

What remained, after an inexplicable break not long enough to qualify as an intermission, was the usual end ("Zoo Station," a much-redeemed version of "The Fly," the always rousing "Elevation") mashed into the usual start (a confetti-filled "City of Blinding Lights" and "Vertigo").

Those halves were separated by a strut through "Mysterious Ways," accompanied by a devil doll yanked from the throng inside the loop. Theme-free as it was, all of it came off as gratitude toward the audience for having paid to encounter a charitable appeal along with some tremendous music.

I notice that once again I’ve talked more about what happened and what it might mean than how assured U2 sounds these days. Let me say this: No major-scale band, save for Pearl Jam and maybe Radiohead or Coldplay on particularly boisterous nights, plays with as much vigor and fervency, and none (including those) can leave its minions so inspired.

And what power from so few instruments! So overwhelming yet controlled is the Edge’s singular, chiming sound, so tense and insistent are Clayton and Mullen’s rhythms, that the minor flubs each man inevitably makes get amplified a thousand-fold.

But such goofs were very few, and the impact of the whole profound. Bono believes these guys are in their prime. He may be right after all. Encore or no encore.

I also haven’t said boo about opening act Kings of Leon, a notable bunch of modern-day rockers with the pulse of the Strokes beating from a Southern heart. I caught most of their set in San Diego and was thrice impressed – at how trenchantly their sometimes tinny guitars filled the hall, how relentlessly they blasted their way through song after song, and how they won over a scarcely interested crowd.

I regret to report that I missed their set entirely at the Pond, despite heading to the venue seemingly early enough to hear at least a handful of tunes. Such was the crawl down Katella Avenue on a night sporting two sell-outs – a concert at the Pond and a Freeway Series face-off at the Big A.

Bono has spoken of the passing today of Pope John Paul II.

"The best front man the Catholic Church ever had. A great show man, a great communicator of ideas even if you didn't agree with all of them, a great friend to the world’s poor which is how I got to meet him. Without John Paul II its hard to imagine the Drop the Debt campaign succeeding as it did."

U2 ends visit to San Diego with a bang

April 3, 2005

Opening-night jitters? What opening-night jitters?

If the members of U2 were nervous on the eve of the start of their "Vertigo/2005" world tour, as bassist Adam Clayton acknowledged they were in an interview in Monday's Union-Tribune, the group seemed more confident and relaxed at its second show.

With an increasingly animated Bono at the fore, Ireland's most famous musical export returned to the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena Wednesday night to perform for another full house. The show came two days after the band opened its tour here Monday with a concert that was uplifting and inspiring, despite being a bit rough and tentative in places.

But there was nothing tentative about Wednesday's concert, which found U2 performing with greater ease, fluidity and dynamic control. (The band returned to the arena Tuesday to rehearse and work out some kinks.)

"So, last night went pretty good," Bono told the audience Wednesday, in reference to Monday's show. "That was (the) rehearsal."

If so, it was the most memorable and accomplished rehearsal Pop Scene has attended – and certainly the highest priced. It was also exciting in a way that Wednesday's more assured performance was not, as fans got to experience the debut of the most anticipated rock-concert tour of the year.

But Bono was quick to explain to Wednesday's sold-out crowd of 14,500 some of the differences between the two gigs.

"We're getting to know these songs, getting to know each other on stage again, getting to know you," he said.

Bono then asked the audience: "What's Spanish for 'Love is the drug?'"

A moment later, he pulled a dark-haired young man out of the audience and onto the stage. "What's Spanish for 'There's a lot of love in Dublin town?'" Bono asked, as he handed him a microphone. The fan translated the remark to loud cheers. U2 then ripped into its next song, which wasn't Roxy Music's 1976 hit, "Love Is the Drug," but "Miracle Drug," a winning tune from U2's latest album, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb."

It was one of seven selections the band performed from its new album Wednesday, the same number as on Monday. But there were some surprises early in the show.

Rather than perform three songs from "Boy," U2's 1980 debut album, as the band did Monday for its third through fifth numbers, the group did just one "Boy" tune Wednesday, "Electric Co." It was followed by 1981's "Gloria," a song not heard Monday or, according to the U2tours.com Web site, at any concert by the band since 1990.

Two numbers later came another song not heard Monday, 1987's "With or Without You," which made for a nice change of pace between the soaring "Beautiful Day" and the moody "New Year's Day." One hopes U2 will continue to change its set list, the better to treat fans to different songs each night.

Another key difference Wednesday was how Bono and the band made much greater use of the stage's heart-shaped catwalk, which extended almost midway across the arena floor.

At one point he took a fan's camera to take a photo of the fan and then, playfully, of himself. Near the concert's conclusion, Bono took the American flag proffered by another fan and held it to his chest, as he sang the line a shot rang out about the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King during "Pride."

Bono again implored U2's audience to volunteer to help end poverty in Africa, but interspersed his appeal with more songs than on Monday. This allowed Wednesday's crowd more time to digest his civil rights-inspired message.

"Can I ask you for some help? I'm not looking for your money; you've given us enough of that, that's for sure," he said, alluding to the steep ticket prices. "We're looking for your voice. We're looking for 1 million American to go to work. . . . "

During other parts of the concert, Bono tailored his comments more specifically to San Diego than on Monday. He hailed "the brave men and women at Camp Pendleton," then saluted San Diego as a "Navy town" at a time of war, saying: "Our hearts and our love go with you."

He also gave another shout-out in between triumphant encore performances of "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "One."

"Wow! This is where Eddie Vedder was born, right?" said Bono, who apparently forgot that Vedder lived in and around his native Chicago before moving to North County, where he attended high school. "(We) love, love, love him. We love Pearl Jam."

The fans at Wednesday's concert, as at Monday's, left no doubt about their love for U2. Bono's "rehearsal" remarks notwithstanding, both concerts were equally notable in their own way – Monday's in part because of the band's opening-night jitters and the waves of anticipatory excitement that repeatedly shot through the audience.

The bassist speaks

ADAM CLAYTON EXPLAINS SECRET OF U2'S SUCCESS

By Marian Liu

Mercury News

On the way to sound check after a late concert night, U2 bassist Adam Clayton recently took some time out to give us a few thoughts:

Q With such a wide repertoire to choose from, 14 albums and 14 Grammy awards, how do you decide what to play?

A We're trying to find a perfect blend between the old and the new -- where the show is going, what the show is going to add up to.

Q Music groups come and go, but U2 has been together for almost three decades now. What's the secret to your longevity?

A (Laughing) I think a lot of it is kind of tolerance. You have to get used to being with people, being with them for a long period of time, and they become very tolerant of you and your little quirks, and you become tolerant of them and theirs. And you just try to see the positive in every situation. . . . We do great work together and we do inspire each other, and I think we have a very good sense of how much further we can go in the company of each other than just on our own.

Q How would you describe the members of U2, quirks and all?

A (Laughing) I'm not sure that they're kind of quirks, they're strengths, character.

Bono is just the most curious person I think I've ever met, always kind of wondering why things are the way they are. He lives very much in that moment.

Edge is very generous. He's always available to people, always there for other people.

And you know, Larry is a drummer. He's very, very black and white. Things are the way they are.

Q As the bassist do you ever feel like the least-visible member of the band?

A Yeah, I mean, certainly you don't stand out as much.

Q Way back you responded to a high school bulletin board asking for band members. What have you learned over the years?

A Loyalty is very important, and building relationships is very important.

Q Bono recently praised the pope as Catholics' ``best front man.'' Any thoughts about the spiritual influence in U2's music?

A A lot of the original forms of traditional music are rooted in spiritualism of some kind or certainly a kind of spiritual ecstasy. That's the kind of music that we like, and it comes out in our music.

Q U2 has supported music downloading with the iPod. Where do you see music distribution going?

A I think definitely downloading is here to stay. It's a very convenient way to get music, but I think it is true that music distribution is going to come a number of different ways; probably in the end it's going to be mixed up with your phone service. And, you know, your phone will also become your digital music player.

Q Do you download?

A Occasionally, I do, . . . but I still like the hard copy.

Q What is some music that you download or buy?

A Arcade Fire. And a band out of England called Bloc Party that are really great . . . and then there's the Killers. You'd probably heard them.

Q What about these younger rock bands, like the Killers, rising up?

A I think it's great that there's new people coming along that are just bringing a freshness into the band scene and kind of competing with hip-hop -- melodic, emotional tunes.

Q How long do you guys plan on doing U2?

A There isn't really a plan. Just as long as, you know, it still seems like it's going somewhere.

Q What kind of legacy would you and the band like to leave?

A To leave a body of work that people respect. It seems like we're very lucky to have the records that we make that seem to be getting better, so that's really all you can ask for.

Meanwhile, Athlete, who are already playing support in Manchester on June 15th and at Twickenham on June 18th, are now lined up as second support before Snow Patrol in Amsterdam on July 16th.
