WASHINGTON (AP) -- The United States' image is so tattered overseas two years after the Iraq invasion that communist China is viewed more favorably than the U.S. in many long-time Western European allies, an international poll has found.

The poor image persists even though the Bush administration has been promoting freedom and democracy throughout the world in recent months -- which many viewed favorably -- and has sent hundreds of millions of dollars in relief aid to Indian Ocean nations hit by the devastating December 26 tsunami.

"It's amazing when you see the European public rating the United States so poorly, especially in comparison with China," said Andrew Kohut, director of the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, which surveyed public opinion in 16 countries, including the United States.

In Britain, almost two-thirds of Britons, 65 percent, saw China favorably, compared with 55 percent who held a positive view of the United States.

In France, 58 percent had an upbeat view of China, compared with 43 percent who felt that way about the U.S. The results were nearly the same in Spain and the Netherlands.

The United States' favorability rating was lowest among three Muslim nations which are also U.S. allies -- Turkey, Pakistan and Jordan -- where only about one-fifth of those polled viewed the U.S. in a positive light.

Only India and Poland were more upbeat about the United States, while Canadians were just as likely to see China favorably as they were the U.S.

The poll found suspicion and wariness of the United States in many countries where people question the war in Iraq and are growing wary of the U.S.-led campaign against terrorism.

"The Iraq war has left an enduring impression on the minds of people around the world in ways that make them very suspicious of U.S. intentions and makes the effort to win hearts and minds far more difficult," said Shibley Telhami, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution.

The overseas image of the United States slipped sharply after the Iraq invasion in 2003, the Pew polling found, and it has not rebounded in Western European countries like Britain, France, Germany and Spain.

However the U.S. image has bounced back in Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim country which benefited from U.S. aid to tsunami victims, as well as in India and Russia.

Support for the U.S.-led war on terror has dipped in Western countries like Britain, France, Germany, Canada and Spain, while it remains low in the Muslim countries surveyed like Pakistan, Turkey and Jordan.

"The position of the United States as the one surviving superpower is to be assertive in responding in a world of terrorism. But in the rest of the world, there is a great wariness about that," said John Danforth, the former Republican senator from Missouri who also was U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. He is now a St. Louis attorney.

The poll found a positive reaction in European countries to President George W. Bush's campaign for more democracy in countries around the world. People in Muslim countries were wary of the U.S. campaign, but supportive of the idea of democracy in their own countries.

Danforth said the attitudes in the Mideast about democracy were a bright spot.

"We should keep plugging away on democracy," Danforth said. "But we need to do a better job of communicating what we're trying to do."

The survey found that a majority of people in most countries say the United States does not take the interests of other countries into account when making international policy decisions.

It also found most would like to see another country get as much military power as the United States, though few want China to play that role.

People in most countries were more inclined to say the war in Iraq has made the world a more dangerous place. Non-U.S. residents who had unfavorable views of the United States were most likely to cite Bush as the reason rather than a general problem with America.

The polls were taken in various countries from late April to the end of May with samples of about 1,000 in most countries, with more interviewees in India and China and slightly less than 1,000 in the European countries. The margin of sampling error ranged from 2 percentage points to 4 percentage points, depending on the sample size.

Mikhailov, on a visit to the Volga region town of Engels, said Russia's need to strike terrorist bases abroad was linked to aspects of U.S. foreign policy, but did not go into details.

Russia threatened pre-emptive strikes on rebel bases anywhere in the world after Chechen separatists took a school hostage in the town of Beslan in September 2004. More than 300 people, half of them children, died in the siege.

Moscow has not specified where it thought these bases were, but has repeatedly accused Georgia of allowing Chechen rebels to operate from the Pankisi Gorge which borders Chechnya.

Critics are skeptical about Russia's threats, pointing to its crumbling armed forces, which have not recovered from a post-Soviet slump due to what analysts say are ineffective fund allocation systems and endemic embezzlement.

Mikhailov himself said in January that Russian fighter pilots got paid so little that it pained him to talk to them.

The blast is said to have taken place as the US patrol was passing through Baghdad's eastern al-Jedidah district which is populated mainly be Shia Muslims.

Shocked relatives

At the nearby Kindi hospital, correspondents say hundreds of distraught relatives wandered along the blood-soaked corridors shouting and screaming as they looked for their children, many of whom were badly mutilated. n official said the bodies of 24 children had been delivered to the mortuary. Abu Hamed, who lost his 12-year-old son in the blast, told the AFP news agency he was at home when he heard the explosion.

"I rushed outside to find my son. I only found his bicycle," he said. He said he found his son at the Kindi hospital mortuary. "I recognised him from his head. The rest of the body was completely burnt." The area of eastern Baghdad where the blast took place has a mixed community of Sunnis, Shia and Christians, BBC correspondent Richard Galpin reports.

A bomb blast in Baghdad in September last year killed at least 34 children.

The children had gathered around US troops who were handing out sweets at the opening of a water treatment plant.

39.000 Irakezen gedood sinds invasie

NEW YORK - Sinds de Amerikaanse invasie in Irak zijn ongeveer 39.000 Irakezen gedood. Zij kwamen om het leven als gevolg van de strijd of door ander geweld.

Deze balans van een Zwitsers instituut, die maandag is gepubliceerd, is aanzienlijk hoger dan eerdere schattingen. Tot nu toe was in berekeningen sprake van tussen de ruim 22.000 tot bijna 26.000 burgerslachtoffers sinds de invasie in maart 2003.

In het zuidoosten van de stad raakten twee Amerikaanse militairen gewond toen een autobom bij hun konvooi explodeerde. Twee Iraakse soldaten kwamen om het leven bij een aanslag bij het voormalige ministerie van defensie in de stad. Bij een autobomaanslag in het oosten van de stad raakten zes mensen gewond, onder wie een Amerikaanse soldaat. Een schietpartij tussen Amerikaanse militairen en opstandelingen die uitbrak nadat bij een Amerikaanse legerpatrouille een bom was ontploft kostte het leven aan een Iraakse burger. Acht mensen, onder wie vier Amerikaanse soldaten, raakten gewond.

De mortierbeschietingen waren gericht tegen het hoofdkwartier van een Iraaks legerbataljon en een sjiitische wijk in Noord-Bagdad. Er vielen geen slachtoffers en de granaten richtten nauwelijks schade aan.

Gewoonlijk worden in Bagdad op vrijdag, de islamitische gebedsdag, niet zoveel aanslagen gepleegd. Waarschijnlijk zouden er meer slachtoffers zijn gevallen als het, omdat het vrijdag was, niet zo rustig was geweest op straat. Al-Qaida in Irak heeft de verantwoordelijkheid voor twee van de in Bagdad gepleegde zelfmoordaanslagen opgeëist. In Haswa, 50 kilometer ten zuiden van Bagdad, kostte een autobomaanslag aan vijf Iraakse soldaten het leven. Bij een controlepost in de buurt van Baqouba werden drie politiemannen doodgeschoten. In Kirkuk kwam een autobom kennelijk voortijdig tot ontploffing. De twee inzittenden en een voorbijganger werden gedood.

Een boer vond vrijdag aan de oostelijke rand van Bagdad de geboeide en geblinddoekte lichamen van vijf mannen die in het hoofd waren geschoten. Woensdag werden in hetzelfde gebied al tien lijken gevonden.

Het Amerikaanse leger maakte vrijdag ook bekend dat een dag eerder twee Amerikaanse mariniers om het leven waren gekomen bij een aanslag met een bom langs de kant van de weg. De mariniers reden op een weg bij de Jordaanse grens.

Tschiderer, with E Troop, 101st “Saber” Cavalry Division, attached to 3rd Battalion, 156th Infantry Regiment, 256th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, was knocked to the ground from the impact, but he popped right back up, took cover and located the enemy’s position.

After tracking down the now-wounded sniper with a team from B Company, 4th Battalion, 1st Iraqi Army Brigade, Tschiderer secured the terrorist with a pair of handcuffs and gave medical aid to the terrorist who’d tried to kill him just minutes before.

Moet je eens beter luisteren. Je hoort heel duidelijk dat de nederlandse stemmen er later ingeplaats zijn. Het geluid van de nederlandse stemmen kloppen niet met de omgeving van waar de opname geweest moet zijn. Ook zijn de stemmen veel te relaxed voor een situatie als deze.
