I know of no reason why the Gun Powder Treason
should ever be forgot.
Gesitueerd in een toekomstig Engeland dat gebukt gaat onder een tiraniek bewind maakt een van de meest sadistische en verwrongen helden van de laatste jaren zijn opwachting. V is harteloos en een anarchist in hart en nieren, zijn doel is het onderuit halen van de regering om zo de mensen de vrijheid te gunnen die hen eigen is. Er lijkt V geen prijs te hoog om dit doel te bereiken, en vanaf een veilige afstand organiseert deze terrorist een aantal spectaculaire aanslagen die het gezag ondermijnen.
De toekomst van V for Vendetta is zowel realistisch als onrealistisch, het vermengt een aantal elementen uit de geschiedenis en presenteert ze in een nieuwe bleke toekomst. Het grappige aan dit alles is dat een aantal elementen uit V for Vendetta vandaag de dag waarheid zijn geworden, terwijl ze zeventien jaar geleden werden bestempeld als zijnde een dwaas angstbeeld van de toekomst.
Vergeet het gezever over superhelden, vergeet de Fantastic Four, Superman en Elektra, V for Vendetta is samen met Frank Miller's Sin City en Constantine een sprong naar een nieuw onderdeel van de comic-naar-film rage, namelijk het adapteren van een donkere zwaardere stof naar het witte doek. Want als mensen denken dat comics gaan over superhelden in strakke pakjes al zwierend aan draden tussen de hoogste gebouwen van New York, dan vergissen ze zich zuur in het medium van comics.

Gebaseerd op het gelijknamige werk van Alan Moore en David Lloyd komt nu dan eindelijk de film versie van V for Vendetta. Het valt me nog mee dat ze de film V For Vendetta noemen, en niet iets nieuws, wat toevallig bij elkaar gejat is van diverse andere dingen (zoals ze bij The Matrix gedaan hebben).

Joel Silver is idd de grootste blaaskaak die er is, maar om de Wachowski's nu overrated te noemen en The Matrix gejat maakt jou net zo'n grote blaaskaak. Purefoy to play V.
February 18, 2005 - According to The Hollywood Reporter, British thesp James Purefoy (Resident Evil) will star opposite Natalie Portman in the big-screen version of the Alan Moore/David Lloyd graphic novel V for Vendetta.
THR reminds us that "the futuristic tale unfolds in a Great Britain that's a fascist state. A freedom fighter known as V (Purefoy) uses terrorist tactics to fight the oppressive society. He rescues a young woman (Portman) from the secret police, and she becomes his unlikely ally."
Purefoy's credits include Vanity Fair, A Knight's Tale, Mansfield Park, and the forthcoming HBO miniseries Rome (as Marc Antony).
V for Vendetta will be directed by first-timer James McTeigue from a screenplay adaptation by the Wachowski brothers. Joel Silver will produce.
Filming begins in Berlin early next month for a fall 2005 release.

ik vrees toch wel een beetje voor de uitkomst. Dit is absoluut geen verhaal dat zich leent voor een eenvoudige filmversie en al helemaal niet met de subtiliteit die de Wachowski's over het algemeen gebruiken in hun films. Dit verhaal draait alleen maar om de psyche van V en zijn tegenstanders dat is wel wat anders dan de bordkartonnen protagonisten uit de Matrix reeks. Maar ja gelukkig regiseren ze hem zelf niet. Niet dat ik veel verwacht van AD James McTeigue.
las trouwens net dat ze al bezig zijn met grote plotwijzigingen waarbij de Nazi's Engeland overnemen en dat het daardoor dus Fascistisch wordt.....omg.
Dit lijkt op het eerste gezicht een project met mogelijkheden en dan zie je plots Wachowski's staan. Benieuwd waar ze nu weer hun ideeën gaan pikken. Of zouden ze weer hun gebrek aan talent laten verhullen door CGI? Voor die McTeague is het een debuut en die krijgt nog een kans, maar de films waarin hij assistant director was, beloven weinig goeds (met uitzondering van Dark City).

hier dan maar m'n reactie uit het andere topic:
Alan Moore heeft in ieder geval al aangegeven dat hij ook bij deze film z'n naam niet op de credits wil hebben. Hij is er ziek van dat Hollywood telkens zijn verhalen weet te verkrachten (From Hell, League of XO Gentlemen).
Hij heeft de cheque hiervoor ook teruggestuurd naar de studio met het verzoek dat bedrag te verdelen onder de rest van de medewerkers.
Ikzelf ben dan wel weer benieuwd naar de film.

After all the stuff with "The League," there'd been some minor law suit with somebody claiming that I had gotten the idea from an American Hollywood screen writer and you can imagine how I felt about that. So, I felt, if I'm going to react I might as well over react. (audience laughs) So, I said, right, that's it, no more Hollywood films. And if they do make films of my work, then I want my name taken off them and I want all the money given to the artists. I thought, God, that sounds principled (audience laughs) and almost heroic! (audience laughs) Then I got a phone call from Karen Berger the next Monday, she's an editor at DC Comics, and she said, "Yeah, we're going to be sending you a huge amount of money before the end of the year because they're making this film if your Constantie character with Keanu Reeves." I said, "Right, OK. (audience laughs) Well, take my name off of it and distribute my money amongst the other artists. I felt, well, that was difficult, but I did it and I feel pretty good about meself. HUGO WEAVING TAKES TITLE ROLE IN V FOR VENDETTA
Hugo Weaving, best known as Agent Smith in The Matrix trilogy, has replaced James Purefoy as the title character in the V for Vendetta movie.

Ik wil mezelf heel graag doen geloven dat dit een leuke film gaat worden, maar gezien de geschiedenis van Hollywood en comic verfilmingen vrees ik al bij voorbaat het ergste (dan kan ik alleen maar positieve verrassingen krijgen )

Films zoals Spiderman en X-men laat ik er even buiten want die hebben door hun uitgebreide achtergrond (te) veel verhaal om 1 op 1 te kunnen verfilmen. Bij V for Vendetta ligt dat wat anders.

America is a federal republic, Britain is not."
David Lloyd was reported to have commented on the script at the recent Bristol comics convention. Superherohype posted a fan report talking to Lloyd, saying "he thinks it was very good for an Action Thriller, but is very much different from the Graphic Novel. He said that the character of Evey is less of a victim in this film and that he had met with The Wachoski Brothers."

kzag hem vanmorgen al op filmtotaal staan, hele stoere trailer, wat mij meteen opviel was dat de makers van deze trailer een soundtrack van Batman Begins hebben gebruikt! past er zeker goed bijquote:

De trailer ziet er verrassend sfeervol uit. Mijn interesse is gewekt. Het lijkt in ieder geval geen overdreven luidruchtig spektakelstuk zonder ziel te worden.
xenofoob, misantroop, antiloop, limonadesiroop.
het zal wel aan mij liggen maar ben erg fan van de comic en vind deze trailer dan ook een aanfluiting, kan me nu goed voorstellen dat Alan Moore zijn naam van de credits af heeft gehaald.
