The battery life of the DS surpasses that of the PSP.
There's no denying that, or that Nintendo's handhelds have always been some of the most battery-efficient systems on the market. Is that, however, as much of a factor nowadays as it was in the past? Does the recharge-ability of today's portables diminish such concerns, at least to a small degree? I, for one, can honestly say that I spend a vast majority of my gameplay time in the comfort of my own home, usually in close proximity to an electrical outlet. Yet another factor that'll make PSP battery life something of a non-issue (at least to those of us with some extra $$$ to blow) is the fact that the PSP's battery can supposedly be removed quite easily, so that another one can be carried along to be used as a backup. For some, battery life will be a major concern. For me...I really don't think so.
"leaving out the GBA slot would've been a good start". "Other than that... hell, I don't know". Nee, tuurlijk niet.quote:The Nintendo DS is a kind of bulky system.
Honestly, I've seen mock-ups PhotoShopped by IGN members that I probably would've preferred over the DS design that Nintendo came up with (no, not that one with like 10 different screens). I find the DS to be a tad too bulky, I find it's buttons too small and close together, and it has a non-ergonomic feel to it that I can't quite put my finger on (no pun intended). To top all that off, just looking at the DS always gives me a sense of too much "wasted space", as though the system could've been made to be far more compact and efficient than it is. How could Nintendo have made the DS to satisfy the likes of me? Well, as mentioned in the previous topic, leaving out the GBA slot would've been a good start (and would've killed two birds with one stone, as doing so would've also distanced the DS from the GBA). Other than that...hell, I don't know, but I'm sure that the engineering geniuses at Nintendo could've figured something out. By comparison (or even on its own), I have to say that I love the look of the Sony PSP. It's sleek, it appears to be well-constructed, and just about every square inch of the thing is occupied by a button, switch, or plug of some sort (I like my gadgets to look especially "gadgety"). Whereas it seems that the folks at Sony really outdid themselves when they designed the PSP, it seems that the folks at Nintendo were just doing themselves when they designed the DS.
"but, thus far, Nintendo really hasn't shown us much that couldn't be accomplished on a non-touch-screen system with a single display". Jammer.quote:Make the games more innovative, not the system.
I know, I know...an innovative system facilitates the creation of innovative games. Honestly, I'm really going to feel that I'm missing out when the likes of WarioWare DS and...well, WarioWare DS finally comes out (as well as a few third-party games I've had my eye on), but, thus far, Nintendo really hasn't shown us much that couldn't be accomplished on a non-touch-screen system with a single display. In my opinion, Nintendo's contribution to the launch lineup should've been a game (like WarioWare DS) that really, really demonstrates the importance of their new system's novel features. The real irony of Nintendo making Super Mario 64 DS their sole launch title for the Nintendo DS is that it was already a launch title for another system, designed to demonstrate the importance of that system's (the Nintendo 64's) own novel feature...the analog controller, which the Nintendo DS sorely lacks. I'm sorry, but Nintendo was leaving themselves and their new system open for criticism on at least a couple of fronts by rehashing a game (criticism front #1) whose original control scheme is impossible to achieve on the DS (criticism front #2). I'll be the first to admit that Sony's PSP launch lineup doesn't exactly make me want to do cartwheels, but there are at least a few games I'm excited about...ones that should have no trouble at all showcasing the features--however mundane, though most of them are more than adequate--that the PSP has to offer. In short, Nintendo has quite a bit more to "prove" to gamers with their system. As unfair as that may seem, it's sometimes the price of innovation.
