Billy Connolly's World Tour of...
Sat 4 Dec, 9:30 pm - 10:10 pm 40mins
New Zealand
Triking through Arthur's Pass, Billy travels right across the country from Greymouth to Christchurch.
Christchurch is 'really a kind of country town that's grown and grown over the years'. Billy takes us on a drive round the town and points out some of the sculptures that have caught his eye, like the Queen's Corgis, erected to commemorate her Jubilee, and the memorial to the World Trade Center tragedy. In Christchurch, Billy plays to his largest audience in New Zealand, 14,000 people in two nights.
While in Christchurch, Billy takes a small excursion to the island of Ripapa. It was here that Felix Von Luckner, a German seaman, was held prisoner for many years. During the First World War, Von Luckner was ordered to sail the Atlantic and destroy as many ships as he could. But as Billy explains, he was quite the gentleman warrior. Von Luckner always maintained that he'd never killed anyone, not even a ship's cat, in his military carrier!
Leaving Christchurch behind, Billy moves on to Nelson. En route he stops off at an idyllic spot to recount the story of the ship called Delaware. On being caught in a nasty storm, the boat was in grave danger of sinking, taking with it all its passengers and crew. However, due to the bravery of one Maori woman, Huria Matenga, all but one were rescued.
In Nelson Billy visits the Museum of Wearable Art. It hosts a collection of garments made from various materials like plastic bottles, tyres, and feathers.
The final destination is Kaikoura. This area is best known for whale watching. After a few unsuccessful trips out to sea, Billy finally spots a couple of sperm whales.
