Toen de eerste Spaanse veroveraars het land van de Maya's betraden, was het hiërogliefenschrift nog volop in gebruik. Een bekend boek is de Dresden Codex:
De laatpostklassieke codex, die 78 bladzijden telt en 365 cm lang is, bevindt zich sinds 1739 in Dresden. Op de beschreven pagina's staan ingewikkelde tabellen waarin de toekomstige stand van Venus en zons- en maansverduisteringen zijn berekend. Hierin werd de rituele kalender van 260 dagen ook gebruikt voor bepaling van gunstige of ongunstige dagen voor bepaalde handelingen.

Codex Madrid:
Dit boek telt maar liefst 112 bladzijden en is het langste vouwboek van de Maya's. Een andere naam voor deze codex is Tro-Cortesianus, afgeleid van de naam van een vroegere bezitter. Deze codex is minder zorgvuldig uitgevoerd. Ook deze bevat almanakken op basis van de 260 dagen kalender (Tzolk'in).

Codex Parijs:
Deze codex bestaat slechts uit fragmenten en telt 22 bladzijden. Hierin worden de voorspellingen voor de 13 k'atun-perioden van de korte telling en voor afzonderlijke jaren gegeven. Verder word er de schepping van het universum en over de 13 sterrenbeelden van de Maya-dierenriem.

Codex Grolier:
Deze codex is vernoemt naar de galerij waar het eerst tentoongesteld werd. Het werd ontdekt in de jaren '70 door plunderaars in een droog hol in Mexico. Het telt 11 pagina's en werd in het begin als een vervalsing gezien. Onderzoek heeft uitgewezen dat het papier uit de mayatijd komt en als echt beschouwd kan worden. Deze codex bestaat uitsluitend uit gliefen die getallen voorstellen.

Haha. Maar door welke middelen/methoden zijn de mayas een succesvolk geworden? Waar lag dat aan?

De spanjaarden gedroegen zich tegenover de indianen als barbaren. Ze verbrandden hun heilige boeken, sloegen hun godenbeelden kapot en doodden zonder mededogen allen die tegenstand boden. Na 15 jaar van verbitterende gevechten en schandelijke gewelddaden slaagden ze erin elk verzet bij de maya's te breken. Yucatan werd een Spaans gewest. Deze verovering betekende de verwoesting van een cultuur die ondanks barbaarse elementen de bewondering en verbazing blijft wekken.
MEn is nog steeds niet helemaal op de hoogte van de Mayacultuur. Vele raadsels zijn nog onopgelost. Maar de archeologen zijn ijverig bezig met de bestudering van de problemen en in de oude ruïnesteden der MAya's worden de opgravingen voortgezet. Nieuwe vondsten werpen nieuw licht op hun merkwaardige samenlevingsvorm.

Het is gebleken dat de Maya-indianen een leidende positie hebben ingenomen in Midden-Amerika's culturele ontwikkeling in oude tijden. Hun geschiedenis, die kan worden nagegaan tot aan het begin van onze jaartelling is interessant, vooral als ze wordt vergeleken met die van de Azteken. Er bestaan namelijk belangrijke verschillen.
Wat de MAya's gemeen hadden met de Azteken was hun godsdienstigheid, hun eerbied voor goden. De merkwaardige kunst en grootse architectuur van de Maya-indianen waren geïnspireerd door de religie.
Wat de MAya's aan beeldende kunst hebben nagelaten, is bijna uitsluitend reliëfwerk. Een steeds terugkomend motief in de kunst van de maya's, zeer bewonderd door het nageslacht, is de slang. De MAya's zagen de slang als een heilig dier, een openbaring van de godheid.

De moderne archeologen hebben de ruïnen van de Maya-stad Chichén-Itza opgegraven uit de wildernis. Door hun onderzoekingen kan men zich een voorstelling vormen hoe Chichén-Itza er in haar bloeitijd moet hebben uitgezien - een stad met vele duizenden inwoners, met brede, door palmen overschaduwde straten en grote open pleinen, met statige paleizen en enorme tempels. Door de piramide en de tempel van de god Culculcan werd het stadsbeeld overheerst.
Naar deze tempel leidden brede trappen met ballustraden die met slangenmotieven waren versierd. Eens gingen van de piramide in alle richtingen geplaveide wegen uit waarlangs boodschappers de verschillende delen van het land snel konden bereiken. Aan alle kanten van de tempel bevonden zich ingangen en deze waren rijk versierd met beeldhouwwerken. Voor de hoofdingang stond een offersteen, het centrum van vele bloederige ceremoniën. De Maya's schijnen zelf maar zelden mensen te hebben geofferd. Bij de vreemdelingen uit Mexico daarentegen was het mensenoffer zeer gebruikelijk

Tot de bezienswaardigheden van Chichén-Itza behoort de doodshoofdenplaats die door een toeval werd ontdekt. Ze bestaat uit een terras waarvan de wanden bedekt zijn met een paar duizend doodshoofden, uitgehouwen in steen. Bij opgravingen in het terras vond men delen van mensengeraamten - klaarblijkelijk is het een plaats van wrede offerceremoniën geweest. Merkwaardig is ook de tempel der krijgers. Onderaan de ingang ligt een hal met vierkante pilaren, versierd met beelden van triomferende Mexicaanse krijgers en overwonnen MAya's in onderdanige houding. Naar deze figuren is de tempel genemd. Daar vlakbij ligt 'het plein van de duizend zuilen', die waarschijnlijk eens het handelscentrum van de stad en de omliggende streken is geweest.

Onder de ruïne treft men het oude observatorium aan. Het ligt boven op een hoog terras. Daar verrichtten de MAya-indianen met verbluffende nauwkeurigheid astronomische waarnemingen. De kalender, die met behulp daarvan hebben uitgewerkt, vormt een bewonderingswaardig product van hun cultuur. De geleerden zijn van mening dat hij alles overtreft wat andere volken op een gelijkwaardig cultureel niveau op dit punt hebben gepresteerd. Volgens kenners kan hij wedijveren met de Gregoriaanse kalender van de westerse volken. Een uiteenzetting van de uiterst gecompliceerde chronologie zou te lang en ingewikkeld worden.

We moeten volstaan met erop te wijzen dat de MAya's in nauw verband met hun astronomische en mathematische berekeningen een schrift ontwikkelden die hen in staat stelde op te tekenen wat ze over de beweging van de hemellichamen en hun eigen geschiedenis wisten. Zo schiepen ze een literatuur die door de Spanjaarden bij de verovering van Yucatan helaas zo grondig is vernield dat slechts DRIE MAYA-HANDSCHRIFTEN bewaard zijn gebleven. Vandaar dat het zo buitengewoon moeilijk is hun geschriften te interpreteren. De hiërogliefen van de MAya's vormen een nog onopgelost raadsel. Tot dusver heeft men slechts enkele van de inscripties, die op de tempels en monumenten voorkomen, kunnen ontcijferen.

Ze worden hier wel erg opgehemeld en neergezet als zielige slachtoffers van de Spanjaarden.

Spanjaarden waren geen lieverdjes daar, maar de Maya's en zeker de Azteken en de Inca's waren net zo barbaars. Zo niet erger

Dat mag dan zo zijn, maar het was wel 'hun' cultuur.

En zo barbaars waren ze niet, want ze hadden makkelijk de Spanjaarden kunnen verslaan. Het was tenslotte hun eigen continent waar ze op vochten.
Toch dachten de maya's e.d. dat ze met hun Goden te maken hadden (de blanke gebaarde mannen).

Ja das toch echt hun fout . Overigens heb ik me nog ff ingelezen en je opmerking e.d. klopt niet. Tot e.d. reken ik ook de Inca's, welke ook door de Spanjaarden verslagen waren. Dit door een strategische fout van henzelf, lees maar op Wikipedia. Kort gezegd kwam het erop neer dat ze de Spanjaarden op een presenteerblaadje aangeboden kregen, toen die hen kwamen bezoeken, maar omdat ze de Spanjaarden onderschatten en minachtten deden ze niets. Vervolgens werden ze in een veldslag afgemaakt

De Azteken is hetzelfde lot beschoren, die hebben de Spanjaarden zelf naar hun schatten geleid om ze te imponeren. De Spanjaarden werden hebberig, weg Azteken

Onterechte ophemeling van deze volkeren dus, zij waren net zo fout als de Spanjaarden en minstens zo wreed. Me dunkt dat we daar niets aan missen. Itt de Indianen in Noord-Amerika, die in veel kleinere groepen leefden en geen wezenlijke bedreiging vormden. Wat hen is aangedaan vind ik schandaliger.
