Het heeft alle schijn van dat een heel seizoen van één van de vier grote Amerikaanse sporten (ijshockey, basketbal, American Football en honkbal) voor het eerst niet doorgaat vanwege een arbeidsconflict. De NHL geeft woensdag een persconferentie, waarop waarschijnlijk bekend wordt gemaakt dat de ijshockeyers en de bond geen akkoord bereiken.

Normaal gesproken was het nieuwe NHL-seizoen vorig jaar oktober van start gegaan, maar de bond en de spelers lagen met elkaar overhoop. De NHL wil een salarisplafond invoeren, wat voor de spelersvakbond NHLPA maandenlang onbespreekbaar was. Deze week kwamen beide partijen in een allerlaatste poging dichter bij elkaar dan ooit, omdat de NHLPA voor het eerst instemde met een salarisplafond. Er werd echter geen akkoord bereikt over de hoogte van het bedrag.

Het is niet het eerste arbeidsconflict tussen de ijshockeyers en de NHL. In 1994 lag het seizoen al eens 103 dagen stil omdat er geen overeenstemming was tussen beide partijen. De laatste keer dat een sportcompetitie stillag in Amerika vanwege een arbeidsconflict was zeven jaar geleden. In de NBA gingen toen 464 basketbalwedstrijden in het seizoen 1997/1998 verloren.

Mochten de NHL en de NHLPA in het geheim toch nog tot een akkoord zijn gekomen, dan bestaat het seizoen 2004/2005 uit slechts 28 wedstrijden. Hierdoor kunnen de play-offs ongewijzigd blijven.

NEW YORK (February 16, 2005) - The National Hockey League announced today that, because a new collective bargaining agreement has not been realized, it no longer is practical to conduct an abbreviated 2004-05 season.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued the following statement:

"Every professional sports League owes its very existence to its fans. Everyone associated with the National Hockey League owes our fans an apology for being unable to accomplish what is necessary for our game and our fans. We are truly sorry.

"Five months ago, I stated that the National Hockey League could not function without an economic system that will bring our League into the 21st Century. I said that our 30 Clubs were united in their dedication to an economic system under which the teams and players, sharing common objectives and a commitment to our fans' satisfaction, would work together as partners.

"The time since then has been devoted to the pursuit of that goal. Today, I can tell you that our determination remains every bit as strong as it was in September to secure the partnership required to protect and ensure the future of the League ... for the benefit of the Clubs, the Players, and our devoted fans.

"When I stood before you in September, I said NHL teams would not play again until our economic problems had been solved. As I stand before you today, it is my sad duty to announce that because that solution has not yet been attained, it no longer is practical to conduct even an abbreviated season. Accordingly, I have no choice but to announce the formal cancellation of play for 2004-05.

"We profoundly regret the suffering this has caused our fans, our business partners and the thousands of people who depend on our industry for their livelihoods. We will continue to explore and pursue all available options in order to achieve a successful resolution to this dispute and to get the best game in the world back where it belongs -- on the ice, in front of the best fans in the world.

"As I also said in September, what we must do now is not about the present or the short-term needs of this season. Rather, it is about the future of our League and 30 teams.

"The National Hockey League was formed in 1917, and it has played a season through to a championship in every year but 1919. Through the decades and the generations we have faced a variety of crises and challenges -- some of which seemed catastrophic at the time. The League persevered through all those adversities and the League will persevere through this one, as well -- to emerge with a framework for the future, one that is fair to everyone -- where our players are fairly paid, receiving what we can afford -- no more, no less.

"This is a sad, regrettable day that all of us wish could have been avoided."

P.S. Nederlands eredivisie ijshockey is gewoon leuk. Toen een paar jaar geleden Den Bosch in de eredivisie speelde en een jaar later in de eerste divisie ging ik zeker een keer of 6 kijken, zeker omdat ik veel spelers kende of mee gespeeld heb.

Dutch treat for Lithuania

Lithuania seemed destined to conquer the Dutch. Three goals in the second period gave them an advantage as they went into the final period, but Mark Bultje scored the equalizer that set up an exciting tie.


Dainius Zubrus starred on behalf of the Lithuanians. The NHL-forward was a constant danger for the Dutch defense. He found his match in Dutch goaltender Phil Groeneveld. The Dutch-Canadian made some incredible saves in the match, to help his team secure a point. He got a lot of help from his defenders, with Leo van den Thillart having an especially great night.

Team Lithuania proved more than a match for the Dutch. Their slick skating, good puckhandling and well executed counter-attacks caused a lot of panicky situations in front of the Dutch net. At the other end the Dutch forwards worked hard and created several chances too. One of these was converted by Lamonte Polet, who took advantage of a rebound to put the Dutch ahead after just ten minutes.

Another rebound pulled Lithuania back into the game with the second period only just begun. A blast from the blue-line provided Rolandas Aliukonis with a rebound for his first goal of the tournament. A wonderful goal by Darius Lelenas handed Lithuania the initiative. Het sent the defense packing with a great move, faked the netminder out of position and scored while falling down.

The lead was wiped out by Doug Stienstra. Yet again being at the right spot for a rebound was the key. Leo van den Thillart fired the shot and Stienstra was ready to pounce. The opposition struck a killer blow just before the end of the second period. With the Dutch on the powerplay, Darius Pliskauskas made a great move from his own end and finished in style.

Nerijus Dauksevicius had a great night in net for Lithuania, but five minutes after the second intermission a clever shot by Mark Bultje bounced into the net to put the teams level again. Even though Lithuania got some chances in the final minutes to grab the points, they failed to capitalize. Phil Groeneveld again made some vital stops and Dainius Zubrus saw his shot hit the post.

The tie means the first point for Lithuania in the tournament, while the Dutch go to four points. The tournament continues on Thursday with three more matches.

After the game both coaches were happy with the result. The Lithuanian head coach Dmitrij Medevedev knew it was going to be a tough match: ‘We knew the quality of the Dutch team, this is the third time we meet on a World Championship. Also we lost to them in Poland last autumn. So we can be happy with the point.’

Dutch coach Doug Mason was a proud coach: ‘Of course I am happy, Lithuania impressed me in the match against France. We played very energetic and very hard today. There were a lot of one on one duels which took a lot of energy. I also want to make a special remark about Leo van den Thillart. He did a great job against Dainius Zubrus. Zubrus is a class player so we decided to put two men on him during the whole match. Of course this caused some disorganization but we had to respect the quality of Zubrus.’

Medvedev agrees with his colleague: ‘Zubrus is very important for this team. Not only his technical qualities but he also can help improve all other players. We hope that we also will see his scoring abilities this tournament.’
