Barca confirm interest in Kanoute

Barcelona have revealed they are considering a move for Tottenham's in-form striker Fredi Kanoute.

The La Liga leaders have been linked with Manchester City's Nicolas Anelka, but are now eyeing the 27-year-old.

Sporting director Txiki Begiristain said: "Kanoute is an option for the technical staff and coach to study, but nothing has been determined."

He told the Daily Star: "Kanoute is a good player and has a European passport which is a point in his favour."

But Begiristain admitted: "We have still not spoken with Tottenham about him."

Spurs boss Martin Jol, who is being linked with a renewed move Nottingham Forest midfield man Andy Reid, is unlikely to welcome any approach.

Jol asserted recently that he was intent on keeping Kanoute, Jermain Defoe and Robbie Keane at the club.

Kanoute joined Tottenham from West Ham in August 2003 in a £3.5m deal.

"I am very happy that I have three strikers of such quality," said Jol.

Despite being linked with Reid, Jol warned he may not move in the January market.

He said: "The way we improve is a big player - and if it's not on because it's too expensive or crazy money we don't do it and we have another crack with young players.

"If we buy someone else it's a replacement, so it's a problem if they start on the bench. No player wants that.

"With signing another striker, I can't go to a player and say `Come sit on the bench'.

"We are looking at two or three players in the Championship, - I had a look at a very good young player last week."

Crewe have accepted Norwich's bid for England Under-21 striker Dean Ashton.

The 21-year-old has scored 17 league goals for the Championship side this season and has been interesting a number of Premiership clubs.

Crewe boss Dario Gradi said he will go for talks with the Premiership strugglers after a written offer, thought to be around £2m, was accepted.

"The ball is in his court, and he might have even signed for them by the end of the day," Gradi told Crewe's website.

If the move does not go through, however, Gradi confirmed Ashton will remain in his side for their FA Cup third-round tie at Coventry on Saturday.

Ashton has also been linked with Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham and Birmingham.

Southampton have reportedly mounted another attempt to sign AS Roma's Egyptian striker Mido.

But the Saints could face opposition from Tottenham for the former Ajax hitman, who joined Roma for £3.9m from Marseilles last September.

On his own website, Mido claims he has had offers from both Premiership teams.

The 21-year-old said: "At Southampton, I'll get my chance to play in a short period, while at Spurs I'll have a big chance to play."

Despite his tender years, the highly-rated Mido has played for several clubs, and fallen out with his national coach.

Mido started his career at Egyptian club El Zamelek before moving to Ghent in Belgium.

He then joined Ajax where he scored 21 goals in 40 first team appearances before moving to Marseilles and notching seven goals in 22 first team outings.

Mido then incurred the wrath of Egyptian national team coach Marco Tardelli when he pulled out of an African Cup of Nations qualifying match claiming a groin injury, only to appear in a friendly for Roma 24 hours later.

Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe held talks with Mido last summer.

But at the time Marseille were reluctant to let him go until they had signed a replacement for Dider Drogba, who had joined Chelsea.

Zaterdag wacht het duel met Chelsea. Het zou mooi zijn als we de goede reeks een passend vervolg kunnen geven. Het is wel jammer dat Arsenal zou kunnen profiteren als we een goed resultaat neerzetten.

"In a 4-5-1 Van der Vaart, as second striker, and Sneijder would do well, while Van Bommel is versatile."

Tottenham boss Martin Jol has been named Barclay's Manager of the Month for December.

Jol's award follows a fine run of form which saw Spurs collect 13 out of 15 points on offer in the month.

Spurs' run saw them rise six places in the Premiership table to a position where they can eye a possible European football finish.

Jol has transformed Spurs since taking over following the departure of former France head coach Jacques Santini.
