tribalfootball.com - January 3, 2005
Barcelona have been linked with Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.
A January move has been ruled out by Barcelona president Joan Laporta, with the club's budget not stretching far enough to compete for the England ace.
But Defoe is sure to attract a firm bid at the end of the season from Barca, particularly if his contract talks continue to drag on.
Speculation over the future of Defoe has been raised during the past 24 hours after it emerged he intends to ditch his current agents in the middle of negotiations over an improved deal.

The Daily Mail says Spurs and Norwich are the two Premiership clubs to show most interest in the England U21 ace, but Canaries boss Nigel Worthington has been scared off by Crewe's £2.5 million asking price.
Spurs technical chief Frank Arnesen has made personal checks on Ashton at Gresty Road and knows coach Martin Jol wants a fourth striker "who is happy to sit on the bench".

Tottenham are chasing Fulham midfielder Steed Malbranque.
The Frenchman has been tracked by Spurs football chief Frank Arnesen since the summer and is expected to attract a serious bid this month, says the News of the World.
Fulham boss Chris Coleman is adamant none of his players will be sold in January, though is believed to be unhappy with Malbranque's form this season.

quote:Man Utd V Spurs decision explained
An FA spokesman after the game absolved the linesman of any responsibility for the apparently mistaken decision not to award a goal to Spurs after a shot from the halfway line crossed the goal line by at least a metre.
"The shot came in from an unusual distance and as such caught the linesman out of position forcing him race back towards the goal as the play developed", explained the spokesman, "As he ran, the United scarf he was wearing under his shirt came loose and fluttered up into his face obscuring his view and preventing him from making the call. It was just one of those things."
In response to further questions from the Press the spokesman explained "If they don't already have a United tattoo most officials on game day try to wear a scarf or a replica shirt under their regulation kit to show their support for the worlds greatest club. The linesman in this case had chosen to wear a United scarf, a common choice that is in keeping with FA guidelines. The root cause of the problem lies not with the linesman but with the players and management of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club who broke one the most important unwritten rules of the English FA: They placed a shot on target at Old Trafford. Martin Jol is new to this country and perhaps he's not yet familiar with some of our finer traditions. If he doesn't yet understand that for the greater good of the game visiting teams, by tradition, are not expected to try to score at Old Trafford then our officials are in a position to help Mr Jol make that cultural adjustment."
Chuckling to himself the FA spokesman added "The goal had to be disallowed to avoid us descending down a slippery slope that would be bad for the national game. It's a fine line the officials have to walk. If they award a goal this week, next week someone might expect to get a penalty or demand that Van Nistelrooy be booked for diving. Can you imagine? That would just never do. No no no. Shocking, just the thought of it."

CARROLL "WAS PETTING LOVEABLE DOG"
Manchester Red Devils Manager Sir Alex Ferguson tonight quashed speculation that a refereeing decision had been given in United's favour during their 0-0 draw with Tottenham. Speaking in a post match press conference, Ferguson claimed that reports that a late shot by Pedro Mendes had clearly crossed the line were "misjudged" and "gay".
"What we clearly have seen tonight is a victory for the forces of evil", the ebullient Scot claimed. "Roy was doing nothing more than comforting a lost and confused animal. If any of you were put in a professional situation as a goalkeeper that demanded expert canine handling, I doubt that you would even be able to stay conscious, let alone act with the bravery and accuracy that Roy summoned. That the referee did not award us a penalty for his actions was astounding".
Carroll affirmed his managers words, adding, "I didn't even see a shot. If there was one, it was done in pretty bad taste. That dog could have got hurt."
United have long prided themselves on the clubs attitude to the animal kingdom, even awarding a position on the playing staff to champion flat runner Ruud Van Nistelrooy, a member of the equine race. In the end, United will reflect on an evening that, had it not been yet again for the disgraceful bias of Premiership officials against the Manchester Red Devils PLC, fans of the Trafford based franchise would have been rewarded with penalty based goals, fuelling their inexorable rise towards yet another richly deserved Premiership Pennant.

tribalfootball.com - January 6, 2005
Tottenham are set to move for Chelsea fullback Glen Johnson.
The Sun says Spurs coach Martin Jol has targeted the England defender to strengthen his defence after losing Stephen Carr at the start of the season to Newcastle United.
Johnson, 20, was Roman Abramovich's first purchase as Chelsea owner when he paid West Ham £6million 18 months ago.
But he has fallen out of favour with boss Jose Mourinho and lost his place to Paulo Ferreira, Chelsea's summer signing from Porto.

English teams could be ready to rival Barcelona in the race to sign Lazio's Goran Pandev.
The forward has emerged as Lazio's most saleable asset - despite being half-owned by Internazionale.
Barcelona have already been credited with an interest, but both Tottenham and Liverpool will have scouts present at the Rome derby against Roma to watch the Macedonian in action.
The Italian media has even somewhat spuriously suggested that Lazio could drop the player from the starting line-up to stave off interest.
Pandev confirmed that Barca had been in contact with his agent, and admitted that he would be hard pushed to turn down such a big club.
"It is true that Barca are interested," said Pandev.
"The Catalan club's director of sport Txiki Beguiristain has already made contact with my representative Sabatino Donati.
"Lazio has put an ¤8 million price tag on me which is a big price.
"If Barca offer you something then you just can't refuse, but the decision is Lazio and Inter's."
