Wayne Rooney has hired a private tutor to help him study for his GCSE exams in English and maths. The footballer is having regular lessons after training sessions in a bid to catch up on his education. The 22-year-old never saw the need to take any GCSEs while a teenage prodigy at Everton - but he now hopes to pass his exams next year.

He is also turning his hand to music after his girlfriend Coleen gave him a £2,500 guitar for his birthday. She sent it to Oasis star Noel Gallagher to sign - but he returned it decked out in Manchester City colours. Early in his United career his manager Alex Ferguson encouraged the football sensation to learn an instrument to tame his fiery temper. Sir Alex calmed his own temper on the field by taking piano lessons when he was a young player.

A source said: "Wayne has had a lot of advice from his United manager Sir Alex Ferguson about how to fill his time away from football. Fergie said he should do something constructive. Wayne's girlfriend Coleen has also been encouraging him to get his head in the books. She did well at school and left with 10 GCSEs. If all goes to plan he will sit his GCSEs next summer in maths and English."

Rooney has also taken an interest in vintage wine.

Ik vond hem gisteren erg tegenvallen in de finale eigenlijk. Misschien is het ook wel goed voor Rooney dat hij een keer geen groot toernooi in de zomer meespeelt en compleet uit kan rusten. Wayne Rooney, the Manchester United and England footballer, and his bride Coleen McLoughlin, both 22, will tie the knot this week. The choice of venue and other details have been kept secret, but some details have leaked out. The cost of the wedding is estimated to be in the region of £5m.

Here is an A-Z guide to the couple and their big day:

A is for Alder Hey. The couple have asked guests not to buy presents but to make donations to the children's hospital in Liverpool.

B is for Butterflies. Guests will be given a box containing a butterfly to release at the wedding.

C is for Curlers. Coleen was seen using them to get her hair into shape before the big day.

D is for the Delfino restaurant, located on the harbour in Portofino, where the couple dined on Monday.

E is for Elise Lindsay, the Sheffield-based personal trainer hired by the bride.

F is for Five million pounds. This is what the wedding will reportedly cost from start to finish.

G is for Georgina Chapman. The British-born designer owns the Marchesa designer label which has designed the wedding gown. Costing up to £200,000, the dress is thought to include pearls and crystals.

H is for Hen party. There was a pre-hen trip to Miami. Later there was a £50,000 lunch, dinner and pampering session at the five-star Lowry Hotel in Manchester for 24 guests, including the two mothers.

I is for Ibiza where Wayne Rooney had his stag do. The footballer hired a luxury villa and told his friends to leave their wallets behind with the bill thought to have been about £250,000.

J is for Jets. Five private planes have been hired to ferry guests from London and Manchester to the wedding venue near Portofino. The cost is thought to be around £200,000.

K is for Karl Lagerfeld. The style guru who heads Chanel fashion house has reportedly designed several of the outfits and accessories Coleen has chosen for her honeymoon.

L is for La Cervara. This is the 700-year-old former abbey where the wedding and reception will reportedly be held.

M is for Masked ball, which is planned as part of the reception party.

N is for New York City. The bride made six trips with her mother to the city for wedding dress fittings. She is reported to have flown first class, at a cost of £8,000 a time.

O is for OK! The couple have reportedly signed a £2.5 million exclusive with the celebrity magazine.

P is for Portofino which will host the wedding. Located in the province of Genoa, on the Italian Riviera, its small harbour is considered to be among the most beautiful of Mediterranean ports.

Q is for Quadrilatero d'Oro, the famous designer mecca in Milan, where Rooney bought his wedding tuxedo.

R is for Rings. The couple have commissioned bespoke bands valued at £100,000 from a bespoke jeweller in New York.

S is for Shore Club Hotel, the exclusive Miami hotel where Coleen had her pre-hen stay, estimated to have cost £60,000.

T is for Tan. The bride has taken six friends to a five star hotel in the Canary Islands to top up her tan.

U is for Unashamedly. This wedding is unashamedly flash and flamboyant.

V is for Villa Durazzo. A 16th Century fortress believed to be another possible venue for the wedding.

W is for Westlife. Coleen is a fan of the Irish boy band, and it is thought the performance fee will be £400,000.

X is for eXchanging vows. Coleen and Wayne are both staunch Catholics. Coleen has chosen to fly her local parish priest out from Croxteth, Liverpool, to oversee the ceremony.

Y is for Yacht. A luxury vessel has been hired to host a lunch for the 64 guests.

Z is for Zoom lenses. Photographers from around the world will be trying to snap the event. A 100 strong security team has been employed to protect the venue.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is set to miss the start of the Premier League season on 17 August after picking up a virus. The 22-year-old contracted the mystery virus on United's pre-season tour of Nigeria and has not trained since.

"I doubt Wayne will be fit for the start of the season," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. "It's a virus he picked up in Nigeria and it's not a nice one. He's not been back in training yet."
