9/16/2003 - GANCI AIR BASE, Kyrgyzstan (AFPN) -- Boom operator Airman Charles Converse noted something different about the Dutch F-16 that slowly moved into place for a quick gas-and-go high above Afghanistan on Sept. 11. The pilot was proudly displaying the Stars and Stripes above the windscreen in his cockpit. The Dutch had not only put a flag in the aircraft; they put an American in it, too.
Maj. Beau Rogers, a U.S. exchange pilot with the Royal Netherlands air force since May, has been flying sorties out of here supporting Operation Enduring Freedom for two weeks. Stationed at Leeuwarden Air Base, one of three F-16 air bases in the Netherlands, Rogers rotates with Dutch pilots in the OEF area of responsibility.
The exchange program gives U.S. and Dutch pilots a chance to train together with tactics used in combat and then actually fly combat missions together. The two-to-three yearlong program has a Dutch counterpart who flies with a squadron in the United States. The end result is a more cohesive coalition, familiar with each others tactics and procedures, according to Rogers.
These guys are true professionals, Rogers said. Their professionalism is equal to their ability in the air.
Rogers, a graduate of the Air Force weapons school at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., passes on his experience in the cockpit as an instructor pilot at the European F-16 weapons school. The school is composed of air forces from Norway, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands.
Their weapons school is similar to ours, Rogers said. They go hard for six months just like we do at Nellis. They dont have the same resources, but the training is superb.
Rogers had a chance to see the results of this training in action in recent missions. Together with Denmark, the Netherlands provides fighter support to troops on the ground in Afghanistan. In late August, approximately 40 Taliban and al-Qaida troops were killed when forward-air controllers called for support from F-16s here.
Its impressive that Denmark and the Netherlands are the only ones flying F-16s in the AOR. Thats a significant contribution to the war on terror, Rogers said.
Rogers will return to Holland soon and pass on lessons he learned here. He said his time with the Dutch air force has made him aware that America is not alone in the war on terrorism.
A lot of people consider the war against terrorism as Americas War, he said. But when you look at the amount of resources other countries put forth, both personnel and equipment, relative to the size of an air force like that of the (Royal Netherlands air force), it says, very strongly, that they think this is a worthy endeavor. Im proud to be part of this coalition.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- U.S. warplanes supporting Afghan ground forces pummeled Taliban positions in southern Afghanistan, killing at least 11 rebels in three days of fighting, military officials said in a statement Thursday.The fighting in the mountains of Kandahar and Zabul provinces has been going on since the end of August, and more than 100 suspected Taliban have been killed, according to U.S. and Afghan officials. Four American soldiers have died during fighting in Afghanistan in recent weeks.
The fighting in Zabul and Kandahar is part of an operation dubbed "Mountain Viper" that has been going on for more than two weeks.
"Operation Mountain Viper continues to destroy the Taliban's ability to operate in the southern region of Afghanistan," the military said from Bagram Air Base, north of the capital, Kabul.
The U.S. military says it is inflicting heavy casualties on the rebels -- but the militia's ability to mount such stiff resistance over a sustained period has led to fears of a mounting security threat in Afghanistan, two years after U.S.-led forces ousted the Taliban.
Over the weekend, Taliban militants in eastern Paktia province began threatening residents that they would cut the nose of any Afghan caught listening to music, and any man who shaves his beard.
While in power, the hardline militia banned music, forced men to grow their beards, and barred women from working and girls from going to school. The insurgents have been increasingly bold in their threats to Afghans deemed to be in leagues with the coalition.
Last week, four Afghans working for a Danish charity were tied up and shot to death along the side of a road by suspected Taliban after having been warned several times to stop working with foreigners.
The U.S. Embassy in Kabul has warned U.S. citizens that they should consider themselves "targets of opportunity" for Taliban rebels, especially when traveling in the provinces of Kandahar and Oruzgan. Embassy official Sandy Ingram said the warning, issued Wednesday, "is based on specific intelligence."
At the end of August, the embassy warned that international peacekeepers, aid workers and other foreigners could be targeted.
In other violence Thursday, insurgents fired seven rockets at a coalition base in Deh Rawood, in central Uruzgan province. Coalition forces fired 81 mm mortars and machine guns at the suspected launch point. There were no reported casualties, and the military did not announce any arrests.
Suspected Taliban set off a bomb on Wednesday as a coalition convoy was traveling near the U.S. base in Kandahar, but there were no reported casualties, the military said in a statement from Bagram Air Base.
In the southeastern city of Ghazni late Wednesday, a bomb exploded outside the home of an Afghan security official, killing a policeman and wounding two others, a spokesman for the governor of Ghazni province, Ahmad Zia Massood, told The Associated Press.
He said he thought Taliban insurgents and their al-Qaida allies were responsible for the blast.
In the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad, a bomb exploded outside a market Thursday, damaging several shops but causing no casualties, said regional deputy intelligence chief Taza Gul Nooristani said. Nobody claimed responsibility and police were investigating, he said.
