Carlisle United fans could be forgiven for hoping that the new season brings nothing more than mid-table mediocrity. The Cumbrians lived up to their perennial 'strugglers' tag once again last season, involved in a relegation scrap for the fifth time in six years. However, manager Roddy Collins has enjoyed a full pre-season with his squad this time around.
That was something he was denied last season - and he is confident his team can be the division's surprise package. Collins believes his three summer signings could turn his Carlisle side into promotion contenders this season. He has captured Steve Livingstone from Grimsby and Bury's Chris Billy, while Paul Simpson has joined his home town club after leaving Rochdale.
"We've added more experience to the side which can only benefit us," Collins told BBC Radio Cumbria. "There's a very strong look about the squad at the moment and you can sense the confidence in the dressing-room."
The Cumbrians manager also feels veteran midfielder Paul Simpson could be the final piece in the Carlisle jigsaw. The former Wolves, Derby and Manchester City midfielder has joined his hometown club on a one-year deal.
"He's great to have around in the dressing-room," Collins said. "Paul can pass on a lot of what I want to say to the younger players. "And he's still a great player who will provide us with something else."
The fact that Carlisle United are not fancied to be amongst the promotion contenders this season doesn't worry Collins. "What other people think doesn't bother me," he insisted. "We have a good young side here and the addition of one or two experienced heads will only make us stronger. I'm encouraged by what I've seen. The players have worked hard this summer and impressed me with their commitment. We may surprise a few people."
Striker Richie Foran could be the key to Carlisle's chances of mounting a promotion push. By his own standards Foran disappointed last year after a prolific first season in English football. and Collins has told Foran that he expects an improvement this time around.
Much is expected of talented youngster Adam Rundle, who showed flashes of brilliance last season, while captain Peter Murphy will also play a big part. The Carlisle squad will not lack experience this season.
Steve Livingstone, Chris Billy and Paul Simpson have played over 1,000 games between them - and will help along the club's promosing youngsters. Paul Raven's experience in defence proved crucial to the club's Football League survival last year and he should play a key role again. The likes of Brendan McGill and Ryan Baldacchino will feel they can only improve after an indifferent 2002/03.
Coming from fighting stock - boxer Steve Collins is his brother - the Carlisle boss loves a challenge, and he will relish the chance to prove the bookmakers wrong. Recent history suggests that United will once again struggle. But Collins has assembled a squad with a nice balance between youth and experience which could prove to be the division's surprise package.

A good start is essential - but if Carlisle can chalk up a few wins early on they could be serious contenders.

Carlisle boss Roddy Collins will be without Brendan McGill and Des Byrne.
McGill suffered a rib injury in the pre-season friendly against Stockport and will miss the next three weeks.

Byrne has badly twisted ankle ligaments and will not be able to train for at least a month.

Collins could hand debuts to Chris Billy, Steve Livingstone and Paul Simpson, who at 37, has joined his hometown club.

York player-boss Chris Brass is awaiting clearance from the FA to see whether wing-back Dave Merris will be available.

Merris has joined from Harrogate Town after the two clubs negotiated a deal for the left-sided defender.

Centre-back Richard Hope has been included in a fully-fit squad after signing a one-month deal on Thursday.

Striker Jon Parkin is still sweating on his appeal against a three-match ban picked up for his dismissal against Livingston, but could miss out anyway with a niggling injury.

Summer recruits Mark Ovendale, Stephen Downes, Darren Dunning, Mitch Ward, Liam George, Chris Porter and Aron Wilford are in contention to make their debuts.

York's joy did not last long as the hosts levelled immediately when Paul Raven rose highest to power home a header from a Paul Simpson free-kick.

City restored their lead after Lee Nogan controlled a Bullock header and fired home from the edge of the penalty area on 13 minutes.

Just after the half hour, Brass was given his marching orders with Carlisle striker Steve Livingstone in an incident that also saw York's Darren Dunning and Carlisle's Chris Billy booked.

The home side pushed for an equaliser but York held on for the points.

Walsall defender Ian Roper is doubtful for the Carling Cup clash with Carlisle after sustaining an injury in the win against West Brom.
The 26-year-old sustained a back injury during Saturday's 4-1 victory over the Baggies.

Midfielder Jamie Lawrence is still out of contention after suffering a chipped bone in his foot during a pre-season friendly.

Carlisle manager Roddy Collins is expected to field an unchanged side for the difficult trip to Walsall in the Carling Cup.

Des Byrne is the club's only major absentee and he is still a few weeks away from full fitness after suffering ankle ligament damage.

A gusty effort by a second-string Carlisle side was not enough to halt Walsall, who progressed to the second round of the Carling Cup.

After a fairly even opening half-hour it was Carlisle who surprisingly took the lead in the 32nd minute when Craig Russell left the Walsall defence flat-footed and lobbed James Walker.

Their lead was short-lived though as the hero from the weekend, Paul Merson, quickly got the Saddlers back on level terms as he beat the defence to drill the ball into the bottom right-hand corner.

Carlisle were unlucky not to take the lead inside the opening minutes of the second half but Brian Wake's 20-yard drive came back off the underside of the bar.

They were made to pay almost immediately when Jorge Leitao was set up by Merson and the striker chipped keeper Matt Glennon to make it 2-1.

Merson forced another save from Glennon in the 75th minute then Russell and Ryan Baldacchino both had efforts go wide as Carlisle pressed for the elusive equaliser.

Collins continues striker search

Carlisle United manager Roddy Collins will step up his attempts to sign a striker in the next 48 hours.
"If we are to progress this football we need to get a new player in quick" Collins told BBC Radio Cumbria.

Mark Birch has admitted his disappointment at leaving Carlisle United after three seasons at Brunton Park.
The defender, who joined the Cumbrians for £10,000 in 2000, has signed a three-year deal with Scottish Third Division side Gretna for an undisclosed fee.

"I'm gutted to leave because I've had a great time here," he told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"Even the bad times have been good but sometimes in football you have to move on and I'm now looking forward to a new challenge."

Collins was in charge as the club narrowly avoided relegation last season.

Carlisle-born Paul Simpson is relishing the challenge of trying to revive the fortunes of his hometown club.

Simpson has been put in temporary charge of the Cumbrians following the dismissal of Roddy Collins.

And if he gets his way, the former Manchester City winger will be occupying the Brunton Park hot-seat on a permanent basis.

The 37-year-old, whose first game at the helm brought Carlisle their first point of the season on Saturday, had his initial taste of management at Rochdale last season and is eager for a second bite at the cherry.

Simpson told BBC Sport: "My intention was to stay in management or coaching, but I had no offers.

"The only offer I had was from Roddy Collins for a playing contract and I came with that intention.

"But football changes all the time and it changed when Roddy left and the chairman asked me if I was interested. I said I definitely was.

"It's a club I have always followed because Carlisle is my home town. That gave me a buzz to come to Carlisle as a player and now even more of a buzz because of the chance of being the manager.

"I have been put in caretaker charge for the next month or two just to show the directors that I can do something with the side and try and turn the situation round. I'm happy with that."

Simpson, who has also played for Oxford, Derby, Wolves and Blackpool, had 12 months as player-boss at Rochdale.

He guided the Spotland club to the fifth-round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history and scored 11 goals from midfield.

But Dale under-achieved in the league and Simpson stood down, unhappy at proposed changes which he felt would have undermined his plans for the future.

It was a difficult learning curve but Simpson, who completed coaching and academic qualifications over the summer, believes the experiences have stood him in good stead as he looks to kick-start a Carlisle side which has finished out of the bottom three only once in the last six years.

"With not getting any offers I had the whole of the summer and part of pre-season to really let everything go through my head and work out where it went wrong," Simpson said.

"I learned a hell of a lot and I also did my pro licence course in the summer, which really taught me how to sit back and analyse everything that went on last season and look at ways of making it better.

"I will try to introduce those things to make things better for the players here."

He added: "I think we have got a decent squad. Roddy Collins worked hard at bringing players in, but they just need to be picked up.

"There are a lot of long faces at the club and in the first few weeks I will be trying to lift everybody, to get everybody to enjoy walking into the club and working hard and hopefully the results will reflect that."

And despite surviving relegation by the skin of their teeth in recent times, Simpson is confident Carlisle are a club of huge potential.

"Carlisle has that potential. If we get a run of results we could get 8,000 here and people have said it could nudge 10,000. If we are getting that we should be doing all right."

He has made three senior appearances for Carlisle, as a substitute.

Meanwhile, caretaker-boss Paul Simpson has released trialists Patrick Ada and Eugene Mbahu.

Club asks for debt extension

Bosses at Carlisle United football club have asked for more time to pay off massive debts.
The Division Three club owes creditors more than £400,000, which it was due to pay back by the end of August.

But directors say they have discovered even more debts and need extra time arrange payments to its creditors.

The club has already been given a three month extension, which ran out at the end of last month.

It now wants until the end of October to repay.

New debts

In a statement, the club said it expected to be able to make an interim payment to creditors in the near future.

The statement added: "The club has asked for a small extension.

"New debts were discovered since the first extension was granted, however the directors are now confident that the list of creditors is complete.

Carlisle caretaker boss Paul Simpson has no new injury worries ahead of his side's trip to Darlington.
Defender Paul Raven looks set to return from a thigh injury which ruled him out of the goalless draw against Cambridge.

Simpson could also pick himself after shaking off a thigh problem, as he looks to guide Carlisle to their first win of the season at the 27,500 all-seater Reynolds Arena.

Michael Price, who joined the club from Leicester in the summer, is standing by to make his debut.

Bottom club Carlisle crashed to their sixth home defeat of the season in what was little more than a stroll for Scunthorpe.

The craft of veteran midfielder Peter Beagrie and the probing of classy Steve MacLean gave the Carlisle defence a torrid time.

The surprise was that Scunthorpe went in just one goal ahead at the interval - a 23rd-minute strike by Steve Torpey after the chance was set-up by Terry Barwick and MacLean.

Ian Kilford and Wayne Graves had chances to add to the visitors' advantage and Carlisle keeper Peter Keen beat away MacLean's effort after good work by Torpey.

MacLean scored Scunthorpe's second in the 51st minute after taking Beagrie's pass in his stride and cutting inside past two weak challenges to cleverly beat Keen for his ninth goal of the season.

Scunthorpe, beaten only twice on their travels this season, went further ahead after 64 minutes with a superb solo effort by defender Kevin Sharp.

His angled volley from 25 yards left Keen grasping at thin air as it flew in at the far post.

Beagrie - denied a spectacular free-kick goal by Keen's diving stop - got his reward in the 83rd minute, netting from the penalty spot after on-loan debutant Shaun Smith had fouled Graves in the area.

The home side grabbed some small consolation in the 87th minute when substitute Craig Farrell profited from an error by Sam Russell.

The visiting keeper flapped at a Smith corner and the ball dropped to the Carlisle striker who side-footed home from 12 yards.

Administration to end for Carlisle

Carlisle United expect to come out administration on Thursday.

The club, who are ten points adrift at the foot of Division Three, hope to see their Creditors' Voluntary Agreement lifted following a meeting in Leeds on Tuesday.

"In twelve months we have paid £1.4m in debts," club director Alan Steel told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"Once we're out of the CVA we can concentrate on getting players in and start winning some games. There's great reason for optimisim."

The move means control will pass back to the club from administrators Haines Watts, who have been handling the finances since June last year.

To that end, manager Paul Simpson will be free to strengthen his squad having previously had to apply to the Football League for special dispensation under the terms of the CVA.

The club have twice been granted extensions to deadlines to clear their debts.

Simpson seeks LDV spark

Boss Paul Simpson is looking for Carlisle's LDV Vans Trophy success over Huddersfield to spark an upturn of fortunes.
Carlisle are 10 points adrift at the bottom of Division Three, but the Trophy has often brought the best out of the Cumbrians who reached their third final last season.

Simpson said: "We keep saying the next game could be the one that turns it round for us.

"Hopefully, this will be the start."

Carlisle won the Trophy in 1997 and also reached the final in 1995.

After reaching the northern area quarter-finals with their 2-0 success over Huddersfield, Simpson is looking for the cup to provide a platform for a league revival. "Any win is important, but we have to build on it," he said.

"The attitude of the players was different class. They set about it from the first whistle and that's what we've got to do.

"We've got another cup game on Saturday and we've got to do the same again.

"Nobody expects us to go there and win, but we will give it our best shot."

Carlisle's trip to Oldham in the first-round of the FA Cup would be a tough one at the best of times.

But typical for a club down on its luck, Simpson's plans have been disrupted by illness, injury and suspension.

With a bug sweeping through Brunton Park, Simpson made the ground a no-go area of Wednesday.

"I've told everyone to stay away and hopefully that will help clear it up and we'll get them back tomorrow.

"It's not ideal but there's nothing you can do about it. It's just one of those things," he said.

On-loan Hartlepool defender Paul Arnison has already been ruled out by his parent club, but Hull have given permission for full-back Shaun Smith to face the Latics.

Everton teenager Steven Schumacher, who scored one of the goals against Huddersfield, can also play.

Some light at the end of the tunnel then for Simpson.

And the former Wolves and Manchester City winger remains upbeat about his prospects of guiding his hometown club away from their annual relegation dogfight.

"I believe we can turn it round," he said. "We knew it would not suddenly change overnight.

"The under-lying problems are still there but it's something we will keep working at.

"I can now bring players in and I just hope I can get players who want to come in and fight for us.

"We are watching players again this week and hoping to get some more in before we play Mansfield in our next league game."
