Het nieuws komt na een turbulent jaar waarin vijf landen, waaronder Nederland, besloten niet mee te doen omdat Israël niet werd geboycot.
Canada is het eerste nieuwe land dat zich aansluit bij het Eurovisie Songfestival sinds Australië in 2015. Later dit jaar zal de publieke omroep CBC/Radio-Canada bekendmaken hoe hun artiest wordt gekozen.
Vorige week werd al bekend dat CBC/Radio-Canada lid was geworden van de EBU, het samenwerkingsverband van publieke omroepen dat het songfestival organiseert. Sindsdien hing het nieuws al in de lucht.

Het Eurovisie Songfestival is populair in Canada. Bij de vorige editie hoorde Canada bij de drie niet-deelnemende landen ('Rest of the World') die de meeste stemmen uitbrachten. Nederland zat daar ook bij. Canada's bekendste zangeres en superster Céline Dion, geboren in Quebec, was in 1988 winnaar van het Eurovisie Songfestival. Dat was overigens wel als vertegenwoordiger van Zwitserland, dat haar had gevraagd.
Het is nog onbekend of Nederland in 2027 weer zal deelnemen aan de 71e editie van het liedjesfestijn. De deur staat open voor een terugkeer, zei songfestivaldirecteur Martin Green dit jaar in Wenen bij de uitgedunde editie.

Dat zeg ik. "European State" is niet juridisch gedefinieerd. In principe kan ook een Aziatisch of Zuid-Amerikaans land lid worden al de lidstaten deze Europeaans genoeg achten.quote:
Cyprus is in principe ook geen Europees land volgens strikte begrippen, maar is wel lid van de EU.
Als de EU ervoor kiest om Canada lid te laten worden, kan de rechter weinig doen om dit te stoppen.

Daar staat alleen dat ze de waarxen moeten respecteren uit artikel 2.quote:

Canada is gewoon in alles een goed en 'Europees'/Westers land.
Wel gek overigens, daar niet van.
