People in the UK should be under no doubt that president Putin is directing his ire towards the UK through espionage, sabotage and cyber-attacks. This is especially true now, as Donald Trump finally appears to put the “boot in”: US missiles and heavy sanctions appear to be heading Moscow’s way any time soon.
Trump’s friendship with the Russian tyrant seems to have run its course, and even the American president now realises that Putin has no interest in peace and will keep marching west until stopped.
Putin may well reassess his stance with the US, now that the American president has confirmed that long range sophisticated missiles are on their way to Ukraine, which will bring Moscow and most strategic sites in Russia very much in range.
However, Putin can’t afford those 100 per cent sanctions Trump has at last threatened, so will likely hold off attacking the US, whilst doubling down attacks on the UK. We must heed these warnings and become more resilient to all these ‘Grey Zone’ type attacks.
GCHQ’s National Cyber Security Centre, for instance, has revealed that there is a malicious Russian intelligence cyber campaign targeting organisations, including those involved in the delivery of foreign assistance to Ukraine. GCHQ also points out that the Russian spy agency cyber unit, the GRU’s Unit 2616, has been involved in credential guessing, spear-phishing and exploiting Microsoft Exchange mailbox permissions. It has also targeted internet-connected cameras at Ukrainian border crossings and near military installations.
Some people in this country seem unable to grasp that we are directly in Putin’s crosshairs. The Russian tyrant believes Britain is the lynchpin to a co-ordinated European military conventional deterrence to his belligerent moves in Europe. And that, if we can be put off, Europe will return to being a mere speed bump for his aggressive expansion westwards.
He may have a point. This is why we must be resilient and face up to him; we know how ruthlessly he exploits weakness, but also how he backs off in the face of strength. This is why he is attacking the UK rather than the US. But it looks as though he has pushed Trump too far this time and may get a few US missiles visiting his palaces and mansions soon, unless he gets round to the peace negotiation table in the next 50 days.
We’re at the vanguard of the (for now) non-combatant resistance against the Putin regime’s unprovoked aggression against Ukraine. At present, they’ll avoid openly attacking the US because they’re still banking on Trump’s mercurial reflexes. So they’ll hit us harder instead. But this may change, depending on Trump’s latest whim. If he really decides he’s had enough of Putin’s “bulls***”, he may well go for the jugular.
Trouble is: who knows? In the meantime, we’re vulnerable. And I imagine recent reports to be proactive on not only cyber security but also security in general is a symptom of the Government’s attempts to raise general awareness to these very present threats.
The fact is this: we’re in what the MOD call a “pre-war” situation. Trump appears to have upped his game in missiles and sanctions. We must do the same in Europe and demonstrate a military show of force to get Putin to negotiate and secure a just peace for Ukraine. If we do not, “pre-war” could turn to “war” very quickly.

Rutte met z'n secundaire sancties op India, Brazilië, China, etc. Die man is echt zo'n spreekpop geworden. Ik vind het overigens wel grappig dat we nog steeds denken dat we een supermacht zijn als Europa. Niet zonder de VS.

Mijn grootste vraagtekens blijf ik enkel nog hebben wij Trump zijn sanctie-gevechtje met de EU. Als dat zo door blijft gaan, heeft dat toch ook gevolgen voor de band binnen de NAVO + voor Oekraine? alleen al vanwege het feit dat alles geld kost.
