Israel needs to begin preparations for the possible impact of a major tsunami, the deputy head of the National Security Council emphasized during a meeting with emergency agencies and multiple government ministries on Wednesday.

Tsunamis have struck Israel in the past, and experts warn they will occur again. While it is impossible to predict when and where the next tsunami will hit or the extent of flooding it may cause, the likelihood increases during periods of heightened seismic activity, such as the recent tremors in Greece.

In the Santorini Islands, thousands of small earthquakes recorded in recent days have raised concerns that a major earthquake could be imminent, potentially triggering a tsunami in the Mediterranean.

Fortunately, Israel is part of a regional tsunami warning system, which can issue alerts as soon as a tsunami wave is detected. The country also has tsunami sensors installed at various locations along the coast.

Understanding the tsunami threat
Tsunamis are a series of very long waves, typically caused by an earthquake. When these waves reach shallow waters, they can rise significantly and strike the shore with tremendous force.

Tsunami waves can continue to arrive for hours, and the first wave is not necessarily the largest or the most destructive.

Flooding on land can last from a few hours to several days. In the event of a tsunami warning, coastal residents should follow evacuation routes mapped out by local authorities. Cities such as Haifa have developed evacuation plans with clear signage directing residents to safe locations. Officials advise residents to evacuate on foot rather than by car to keep roads clear for emergency responders.

The latest satellite-based radar measurements of the surface of the island group seems to show that some inflation has affected the volcanic complex since the start of the seismic crisis about 10 days ago. Michalis Foumelis, associate professor at the Department of Geology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, reported to a local newspaper that "for some time now we have detected some signs of change in the volcano compared to its previous state of calm."
The findings are not yet very conclusive and the observed deformation is still relatively weak, but could mean that magma has intruded at shallower levels, raising thus the chance of a new (probably small) volcanic eruption in or near Santorini.
"We were waiting for the other IMPIS networks to confirm that there was something and in turn we contacted the competent authorities, informed them and everything that is now underway began", Foumelis added.

Little change in the seismic activity between Santorini, Amorgos and Anafi islands has occurred in the past 24 hours. The strongest quake had a magnitude of 5.2 and occurred 30 km NE of Santorini, closer to Amorgos than Santorini. Additionally, the networks detected 14 quakes between magnitude 4 and 5, as well as 48 quakes between magnitude 3 and 4 (plus many more smaller events).

Earthquakes continue, slowly decreasing trend

There's no significant change it seems: earthquakes continue to be frequent, but also a slowly decreasing trend over the past 24 hours.The last event above magnitude 5 was yesterday morning, since then, "only" 10 quakes higher than magnitude 4 have occurred. The trend of decrease is best seen when looking at the combined energy over time.

Schools on Santorini to remain closed until at least Feb 14
Greek authorities decided to keep schools on Santorini and the nearby islands of Anafi, Ios, and Amorgos closed until at least 14 February, as a precaution in case of stronger quakes.
No significant change in the earthquake activity has occurred today, although one can observe a weak decrease in intensity overall compared to a few days ago.

The Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization (OASP) of the Infrastructure Ministry said that the seismicity remains stable and has NO relation to volcanic activity, neither with the volcano of Santorini itself, nor the nearby submarine volcano Kolumbo. Certainly, that's what inhabitants of the affected islands fear most.
