In May, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) responded to an appeal from the Ukrainian Parliament with a written declaration urging recognition of the deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944 as genocide against the Crimean Tatar people. The PACE document condemns human rights violations against the Crimean Tatars by the Soviet Union and Russia and calls on all partners to recognize the deportation as genocide against this people.

It flew over 350 km over four regions of the neighbouring country, which is an ally of Russia.

The Belarusian monitoring group Belaruski Gayun reported on this.

This is the second such incident in the last two days.

On Saturday morning, Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, said that on the night of 13 July, Russia had attacked Ukraine with 5 Shahed-131/136 drones. Four of them were shot down by mobile AA fire teams in the Donetsk and Kharkiv regions. The fifth drone left Ukrainian airspace in the direction of the Gomel region of Belarus.

According to the monitoring group Belaruski Gayun, at around 3:00 a.m., a Russian Shahed drone crossed the Belarusian-Ukrainian border near the village of Loyew in the Gomel region and continued its movement north.

Next, the Shahed drone flew over Gomel and Zhlobin and entered the Mogilev region and then the Minsk region, getting as close as possible to the Belarusian capital.

Throughout Takhistov’s communications with the undercover employee, Takhistov repeatedly referred to his RMVE ideology and his desire to advance that ideology through violent means. In May, Takhistov informed the undercover employee that he was planning to travel to Ukraine in July to join the Russian Volunteer Corps, explaining that he chose this organization because it was openly National Socialist and, more importantly, specialized in assassinations, attacks on power grids and other infrastructure sabotage.

Takhistov discussed infrastructure sabotage, specifically how to damage an electrical substation using Mylar balloons or Molotov cocktails, which Takhistov explained how to make. Takhistov told the undercover employee that, while Takhistov was in the Ukraine, the undercover employee needed to carry out at least one event of serious activism.

On two occasions in June and July, at Takhistov’s direction, Takhistov and the undercover employee drove to two different electrical substations in North Brunswick and New Brunswick, New Jersey. During these visits, Takhistov instructed the undercover employee on numerous aspects of how to conduct an attack on an electrical substation.

On July 5, during one of these meetings, Takhistov directed the undercover employee to take several photographs of the electrical substations so that Takhistov could send them to his Russian friend for additional advice on how to best sabotage the stations.

Takhistov was arrested Wednesday afternoon at Newark Liberty International Airport where he was planning to travel to Paris on his way to Ukraine.

Takhistov is charged with one count of soliciting another individual to engage in criminal conduct that involved destroying a public service enterprise group circuit breaker and substation. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $125,000 fine.

The FBI is investigating the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Vera Varshavsky for the District of New Jersey and Trial Attorney James Donnelly of the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section are prosecuting the case.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview published on May 25 that Russia's losses during the offensive were eight times higher than those suffered by Ukraine's Armed Forces.

The Ukrainian cope cage-covered Nissan SUV rumbled down a dirt road, chased by a First-Person View (FPV) drone zipping through the sky with an angry buzz. At first glance, this seemed like a video seen many times on social media. Both sides use these light, fast, highly maneuverable flying munitions as fearsome attack weapons.

The driver, however, was in no danger. He was motoring through a training ground’s obstacle course designed to help teach new Ukrainian FPV pilots how to fly over, around, and through objects, avoid electronic warfare countermeasures, and hit moving targets.

It’s one thing to have drones. It is something else altogether to reliably guide them to dynamic targets across a chaotic and bloody battlefield. While the many videos of attacks on tanks, trucks, and troops like the one below make it look easy, it’s not.

“We have a constant need to train our pilots and operators. The world of unmanned systems is constantly changing and the enemy comes up with certain methods or can prevent us from completing our tasks,” said one of the soldiers, who goes by callsign Teenager. “We have the opportunity to constantly train and improve our skills.”

As he speaks, the video cuts to an FPV drone flying through a net-covered tube obstacle. It’s one of the many hurdles new pilots have to navigate as they become familiar with flying and experienced pilots have to use to refresh their skills.

For rookies, just getting to that stage takes time.

“There are training grounds for practicing motor skills, there are targets that can always be hit, there are…tools so that pilots can prepare and learn to work not just in hothouse conditions, but in conditions as close as possible to combat,” Teenager explained.

This training teaches pilots to make kills that look right out of a dystopian movie, including strikes through open windows, doors and tank hatches.

The program is about more than just learning how to fly and fight. Successful FPV operations require munitions mated to the drone and a constant need for parts. Among other skills, the new operators learn to use a FlyingBear high-speed 3-D printer to fashion needed pieces.

As FPV drones have become a weapon of choice in this war, the demand for people to fly them is intense and about to become more so.

The Ukraine Defense Contact Group’s Drone Coalition signed a memorandum of understanding on Wednesday at the NATO Summit pledging to provide one million FPV drones to Ukraine. So far, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Latvia, New Zealand, and Sweden have promised $49 million to rapidly procure them. More funds are expected as well.

Latvia is providing a drone testing training range for industry and the military to continuously improve drone technology. The U.K. has launched an industry competition on behalf of the Drone Coalition to develop and procure FPV drones. To date, that effort has received 265 bids, which are currently being evaluated. The first contracts are expected to be signed in August.

The coalition, however, will give Ukraine more than just FPV drones.

“At the same time, coalition members are working to provide other types of drones like reconnaissance, strike drones, AI-upgraded drones, as well as counter-drone capabilities. Through the Drone Coalition, we will be seeking joint procurement initiatives to utilize and expand national industrial capacities.”

Thanks to a major recruiting effort by the Ukrainian Ground Forces Command, there is a steady stream of people interested in flying FPV drones to kill Russian fighters.

They come from the military as well as the civilian world, said Teenager.

Gamers make up a good portion of that cadre.

“Maybe if yesterday you were grieving for Mom, today you are a great find for the Army and a great danger for the enemy,” he said.

Thanks to Luxembourg and Denmark’s contributions to the IT Coalition, Ukraine received network equipment and auxiliary licenses worth over �2 million.

The Ministry of Defense reported that this equipment will strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Defense’s data centers and the Armed Forces cyber defense.

How Belarus came up with "tension" on the border with Ukraine

Ukraine is getting additional air defense batteries, but needs a lot missiles to keep them shooting around the clock

.In fits and starts in recent months, Ukraine’s allies have finally responded to Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenky’s increasingly urgent pleas for more long-range air defense systems.

Now a shortage of missiles, not launchers and their supporting radars, is about to become Ukraine’s biggest air defense problem.

In April, Germany pledged a third Patriot battery. Two months later in June, Italy pledged a SAMP/T battery—its second. And at the NATO summit in Washington, D.C. this week, alliance leaders including U.S. Pres. Joe Biden confirmed the United States and Romania would donate additional Patriot batteries—respectively, their second and first. Meanwhile, The Netherlands has offered up enough launchers for Ukraine to form a seventh Patriot battery.

“The United States and our allies and partners remain committed to providing Ukraine with additional air defense capabilities to defend itself against Russia's continued aggression,” the Pentagon stated.

Once all the newly promised systems arrive, the Ukrainian air force should have at least nine of the best Western-made air defense batteries: seven Patriots and two SAMP/Ts. The air force also has around a dozen ex-Soviet batteries—S-300s, mostly, but also at least one S-200.

In theory, it’s just enough batteries to protect all of Ukraine. In practice, the Ukrainians don’t have nearly enough missiles to keep the batteries in action around the clock.

The S-200 ranges 190 miles. The Patriots and SAMP/Ts—as far as 90 miles. The best S-300s can hit targets 75 miles away. While the Ukrainian air force and army also operate hundreds of shorter-range air defense systems, it’s these longer-range air defenses that represent Ukraine’s best defense against nearly daily Russian missile raids.

Those raids are escalating. Between March and June, the Russians fired 446 missiles at Ukrainian cities—dozens more than they fired over the same period last year. A cruise missile strike on Kyiv on June 8 damaged a children’s hospital, killing two adults and injuring 16 people, including seven children.

Assuming the Ukrainian air force deploys its best Western-made air defenses to safeguard its biggest cities, keeps the S-200 where it apparently is—in the south, where it can threaten Russian air force jets over the Black Sea—and doles out the S-300s to cover the front line as well as smaller cities, nearly all of Ukraine’s 233,000 square miles and 38 million people should soon be under the protection of at least one long-range air defense battery.

Yes, the nine Western-made batteries—seven Patriots and two SAMP/Ts—are well short of the 25 Patriot batteries or equivalents that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky has asked for. And the Ukrainians will need extra batteries to replace combat losses, of course.

But the recent NATO pledges go a long way toward building the basic air-defense architecture Ukraine needs to fend off Russian raids and secure its population, industry and energy infrastructure.

What that architecture lacks is an adequate supply of missiles. Ukraine’s allies have spent billions of dollars on missiles for the Ukrainian air defense batteries, but the supply almost certainly falls well short of the need.

Consider how busy Ukraine’s first Patriot battery was just in the first few weeks of operation last year. The German-donated battery arrived in Ukraine in May 2023, shot down its first Russian missile around May 11 and then, over the next six weeks, downed another 19 missiles—plus six attack drones, one surveillance drone, three helicopters and three fighter-bombers.

That’s five kills a week for one battery. Assuming some missiles miss—say, half—a single Ukrainian Patriot battery could fire 10 missiles a week without breaking a sweat. Ukraine is about to have eight more batteries in the same class as that initial German Patriot. They could conceivably fire 80 missiles a week—or nearly 500 a year—and only shoot down slightly more than a fifth of the incoming Russian missiles.

Guess how many Patriot missiles U.S. defense firm Lockheed Martin produces every year. That’s right: 500 as of December. Ukraine’s allies can send older missiles from their own stockpiles, but it’s the policy of many of them—the United States, in particular—to buy a new missile for every old missile it gives away.

Given the total absence of any slack in the supply of Patriot missiles, it should come as no surprise that the Biden administration has put in place a new policy: from now on, all newly built Patriot missiles go straight to Ukraine instead of any other customers.

“We’re going to re-prioritize the deliveries of these exports, so that those missiles rolling off the production line will now be provided to Ukraine,” White House national security communications adviser John Kirby told reporters late last month.

Between Patriot missiles and missiles for SAMP/Ts, the United States and its European allies can produce barely enough missiles to keep Ukraine’s air defense batters in action at the current firing rate.

But those batteries are already firing far too infrequently to shoot down all the incoming Russian missiles. To have a shot at hitting all the Russian munitions, the Ukrainians might need more than 2,000 long-range air defense missiles every year. Potentially four times as many as they’re currently getting.

However, while full-fledged models of anti-aircraft drones are still being tested, Ukrainian engineers have already adapted common FPV copters for these tasks.

Having worked out the tactics of detection and interception, the Ukrainian military began to use these drones successfully and on a large scale, which brought the first results on the battlefield and in the rear in early summer.

Obviously, such a set of additional armor will not protect against a direct hit by an artillery shell or a GMLRS rocket with a shrapnel warhead.

At the same time, the motive for such modernization could be the need to protect against attacks by numerous Ukrainian bombers and FPV drones operating behind the invaders’ lines at a distance of up to 30-40 kilometers.

The armor panels can protect against fragments and explosions of free-falling munition used by multirotor drones. At the same time, the radar and antennas of the system remained uncovered.

It is not known for certain whether this modernization is the decision of the manufacturer or an improvisation of the Russian military on the ground. However, this is not the first attempt to protect the Tor SAMs.

At the end of 2023, a photo of a Russian anti-aircraft system covered with sandbags was posted online. The latter, according to the crew, were supposed to protect against hits to the side and vertical attacks.

Strikes to the upper hemisphere with loitering munitions and FPV drones are currently one of the most common causes of those system losses.

In particular, in recent months, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have used specialized strike drones to hit three such installations (1, 2, 3).

The independent Russian news site Verstka published the results of a study it has done into the practice of honoring convicted criminals as “war heroes.” After examining local and national news reports, including figures published by Mediazona and the BBC Russian Service, it has identified 58 regions that have commemorated the memory of 408 former prisoners who were released to fight in President Vladimir Putin’s so-called “special military operation.”

Murderers, rapists, drug dealers, armed robbers and others convicted of violent crimes are remembered in individual memorial plaques placed on schools and residential buildings, school information stands, memory corners and desks dedicated to individual “heroes,” lanes and city streets have been renamed and are decorated with their portraits, museum exhibitions and sports competitions are organized in their honor, trees are planted, and their names are added to memorials erected to the dead from past conflicts including those of the “Great Patriotic War.”

Verstka also analyzed the crimes committed by those released to the war. There were 128 convictions for murder, attempted murder and grievous bodily harm resulting in someone’s death. The next most frequent crimes were those involving illegal drugs – 110 cases. The balance involved “banditry,” armed robbery or thefts involving violence, sexual assaults, rape and serious assault. Also, the future “heroes” committed 88 thefts, 24 robberies and 46 robberies. In addition, the authorities immortalized those convicted of beatings, threats to kill, banditry, and in two cases, rape and sexual assault.

In some cases, the “heroes” had been convicted for several different serious crimes and more than half were “repeat offenders,” with several having been convicted for multiple murders and manslaughter.

The practice of releasing prisoners to fight began in the summer of 2022 under the auspices of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s Wagner PMC, and before the end of that year the first reports appeared in the Russian media of memorials being erected for those killed.

An investigation by the Russian news site Mediazona, working with BBC Russia in June, reported that of the nearly 50,000 Wagner fighters dispatched to fight in Ukraine around 20,000 died with nearly 18,000 of those, almost 90 percent, being released convicts.

In early 2023 the Russian Ministry of Defense took over responsibility for recruiting prisoners for the front. A BBC Russian Service investigation concluded that criminals recruited by the ministry died on average within eight weeks of arriving in Ukraine compared with Wagner convict “volunteers” surviving a mere four weeks longer.

According to Verstka in 2023 more than 190 serious criminal cases were opened against former Wagner fighters who returned from the war in Ukraine and had received a presidential pardon. More than a third of these were those previously convicted for murder, sexual or violent crimes and then killed or raped again on their return, some literally within days or even hours of coming home.

While it may be considered natural for communities to honor their citizens who died serving their country, no matter how dishonorable the war in which they fought might seem, it is beyond the comprehension of many that violent criminals would be held up as paragons, as is currently happening in parts of Russia.

According to data from open sources, the Bundeswehr currently has two types of combat aircraft in service: the MRCA PA-200 Tornado multi-purpose combat aircraft and the Eurofighter, DW said.

Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, said earlier that Ukraine and Sweden were negotiating the supply of Saab JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.

Hungary, which currently helms the Council of the European Union's rotating presidency, plans to host a foreign affairs summit in Budapest on Aug. 28-29.

"If there's a formal foreign affairs council, organized by the high representative (Borrell) the same day, the ministers won't be able to go to Budapest," one diplomat told Politico.

The snub is a response to Orban's supposed "Ukraine peace missions" that included trips to Kyiv, Beijing, and, to the outrage of leaders across the EU, a visit to Moscow and a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Orban also met with Donald Trump, a presumptive Republican nominee for the upcoming U.S. presidential election who recently narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.

Brussels stressed that the Hungarian prime minister did not represent the bloc in any way, and Hungary's envoy in Brussels was lambasted over his country's "rogue diplomacy."

According to one of Politico's sources, the boycott of Hungary's summit means to "send a clear signal that Hungary does not speak for the EU."

Hungary is widely seen as the most Kremlin-friendly country within the EU, and its past conduct has sparked ire among its European partners on multiple occasions. Budapest has repeatedly obstructed sanctions against Russia, Ukraine's accession talks, and aid for Ukraine.

Even before the outbreak of the full-scale invasion, relations between Brussels and Budapest had been strained as the EU accused Orban of democratic backsliding and deteriorating rule of law.

The story of Urgen is a bit different. The Indian Express had earlier reported that he was duped by agents who promised him the job of a security guard in Russia, but took him instead to the frontlines of the battle with Ukraine.

Desperate to bring him back, his family approached Rabi Pradhan, the chairperson of the board of administrators of Kalimpong Municipality for help. Subsequently, Pradhan reached out to the Ministry of External Affairs and got a reply that the matter had been taken up with the Indian Embassy in Moscow “for necessary assistance”.

Speaking to The Indian Express from Kalimpong, Pradhan said he is in constant contact with Urgen via WhatsApp. “It has been six months since Urgen got there. We are not sure whether he will return alive… He sent me a video message last night,” Pradhan said.

In the video message sent Thursday, Urgen said: “Since March, I have been stuck in the Russia-Ukraine war. There were 15 non-Russians here, but 13 have been killed. Only the two of us, myself and a man from Sri Lanka, are alive. I am in touch with the Kalimpong Municipality chairman… He told me that Modi was in Russia and he had a talk with the Russian President. I am happy that I am alive and I want to go back to my country… I appeal to authorities to please release me and other Indians…”

In earlier conversations with Pradhan, Urgen highlighted his plight. “I am alright. I saw the news you guys have sent me, thank you… Let us see what happens next, what fate has planned for me… I am not sure if my name will be included for evacuation… Though Modi ji has spoken about our situation, we are not sure what steps the Russian government will take… If our names will be included or not… Whatever messages you guys get, please do send them to me…,” Urgen told Pradhan.

During one conversation, Urgen spoke about the Army camp he was in: “For now, we have been brought to the rest area for the next 10-12 days, but the rest area is also in the forest… There are shops nearby and we are allowed to visit the shops in the evening from where we can call home…. In the camp, we have WiFi, but we are not given the password, so we cannot call from the camp…”

He also told Pradhan that according to what he heard, he would be allowed to leave after a one-year contract is fulfilled. “I volunteered to have my contract cancelled, but they said this could not be done,” Urgen said.

Urgen is an ex-serviceman who left home on January 18, this year. He was taken to Delhi and then to Russia by agents who promised him a job as a security guard.

His wife Ambika said, “We have two children. I just want my husband to return alive.”

Gagandeep said the conditions on the frontline are “horrific”. “I was not on the frontline as I suffered a knee injury. All other Indian youths in my unit are already on the frontline. They all told me that the situation is very serious there,” he said.

“One youth from Uttar Pradesh was on the frontline. He came back only last night and explained the horrific conditions… They (the Russian military) have been sending maximum force to the frontline,” Gagandeep said.

He said that during Modi’s visit to Moscow, he had hoped he would be sent back home. “But now we have been asked to go to the frontline. I request the Indian government to talk to Russia and arrange our return to India,” he said.

These events include theatre productions, stand-up comedy shows, ballets, or film screenings. Unfortunately, for the men involved, these encounters never materialise. These fabricated events are often priced around �35 for a pair of tickets, and the victims, referred to by the scammers as "marks," are pressured to pay using cryptocurrencies.

The scammers promote cryptocurrencies for their untraceable nature, starkly contrasting traditional fiat currencies. Once the victims have paid using cryptocurrency, the scammers inevitably back out of the date. They then feign sympathy and suggest the men request a refund, a process they know is impossible on their fabricated website.

This triggers the second phase of the scam, which is managed through a customer support channel on Telegram. Arthur reveals that this channel is likely operated by the same scammer using another fake profile.

The system on this channel deceptively instructs the men to purchase two additional tickets as a deposit for their supposed refund on the initial purchase. This creates a scenario where the victim can theoretically lose unlimited money, depending on their gullibility.

As Arthur elaborates, the scammers will allege mistakes in the refund form, manipulating the men into further payments. They pressure the victim into sending additional payments, typically doubling the amount each time, to rectify the supposed mistake.

A Deceptive Fundraising Campaign
Dating apps have become a breeding ground for scams. Dishonest individuals use these platforms to prey on unsuspecting victims, tricking them into sharing sensitive details, but some perpetrators face justice.

A recent case involving Mai Watanabe, a Japanese woman who swindled over $1 million from men on dating apps, highlights the potential dangers. Watanabe was sentenced to nine years in jail earlier this year."

According to Arthur, despite typically profiting around �100 per scam, the Monetary Army has reportedly swindled one victim out of a staggering �19,000. While some of the earnings are allegedly directed towards the Ukrainian army, most fund the scammers' salaries.

Unlike Watanabe, many dating app scammers manage to evade capture and amass significant sums of money through their illicit activities. Arthur himself claims to make roughly �1,600 a month from this illegal activity.

Desperate for resources in the war that has dragged on for nearly two and a half years, the Ukrainian army is likely accepting any donations it can secure, regardless of their origin.

Escalating tensions saw both Russia and Ukraine launch drone attacks on Saturday. One such Ukrainian strike ignited a fire at a Russian oil depot, while Russian shelling tragically claimed the lives of four people in Ukraine, according to officials.

Governor Oleh Syniehubov reported two additional fatalities and 22 injuries in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region on Saturday afternoon. An oil depot in the Tsimlyansky district of Rostov Region, far from the border, was set ablaze in the early hours of the morning. This attack marks the latest long-range strike by Kyiv's forces.

According to the UN there were about 37mn people in Ukraine at the beginning of this year, but by 2100, the country's population will be reduced to 15.3mn people.

The UN also predicts that the global peak in populations will come early, in 2084 of namely 10.3bn people, but by 2100, the number of people will decrease slightly to 10.2bn.

Ukraine’s population fell behind that of Poland for the first time after a cut price electronic census revealed the number of citizens had dropped by some 5mn people to 37.289mn in 2020 since the last census in 2000. Eurostat also estimated the actual population size to be 37.98mn in 20218 and another study in 2023 found the population had fallen again to 29mn souls, sparking concerns over the future of the country’s demographic future, according to a study from the Ukrainian Institute of the Future, Ukraine Business News reported.

And the crisis is accelerating. Ukraine's birth rate plummeted to 300-year low with just 187,000 births recorded in 2023 (including in Russian-occupied territories), according to according to Ukraine’s Institute of Demography and Social Studies -- the lowest annual figure in recorded history over the last 300 years, exacerbating an already dire population catastrophe facilitated by economic turmoil and war.

The demographic curve shows that Ukraine’s population has been in an uninterrupted decline since 1991, and took an even sharper downward step in 2014 following the 2014 Revolution of Dignity.

Ukraine’s demographic crisis is being catalysed by the war with Russia, but as bne IntelliNews reported, it is part of a wider demographic crisis in Emerging Europe that will take population levels back to the early 20th century in the coming decade. By contrast, a UN study found the populations in Central Asia are booming and are all expected to grow in the next few decades.

Russia's is also famously facing a population shrinkage, but thanks to the relative prosperity in the noughties plus a pro-birth government policies as featured by bne IntelliNews’ Putin’s babies, Russian fertility rates recovered to 1.8 in 2023 – one of the highest in Europe – from record lows in the middle of the decade when the fertility rate fell to a record low 1.5. However, since then fertility rates have recovered a bit further thanks to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing focus on stemming the population decline and fertility rates were 1.826 births per woman as of 2021 – one of the highest rates in Europe. According to United Nations statistics, the fertility of Russia's Muslims stands at 2.3, much higher than the overall national fertility rate.

The Russians hid their self-propelled gun among the trees in the forest belt.

However, the Ukrainian Shark drone detected the position of the Russian invaders and adjusted the strike of the Defense Forces’ firepower against them.

The foundation reported that the Giatsint-S self-propelled gun had been destroyed by the soldiers of the 44th Separate Artillery Brigade “Hetman Danylo Apostol”.

It is likely that the Russian 152-mm self-propelled gun was hit by a high-precision munition.

Observers who monitor the course of hostilities in the Russian-Ukrainian war have found that the Russian Giatsint-S self-propelled gun had been discovered and destroyed near the village of Voskresenka in the Zaporizhzhia region.

“In the meantime, we thank everyone who donated to the Shark drones as part of the Eye for Eye project. It is you who are the sponsors of this beautiful bonfire,” the Come Back Alive Foundation emphasized.

The Ukrainian Shark drone detected the position of the Giatsint-S self-propelled gun of the Russian invaders and adjusted the firepower of the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

The UAV was purchased and handed over to the military aerial reconnaissance men at the expense of the first Eye for Eye project from the Come Back Alive Foundation and the OKKO filling station chain.

As part of this initiative, the organizers will hand over 25 systems to the Ukrainian military. They include 75 UAVs from Ukrspecsystems (50 main drones and 25 more to replace lost ones), 25 Torsus cross-country vehicles from Pulsar Expo equipped with control posts and 25 launchers.

Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi ordered an inspection of the 59th Separate Motorized Brigade "Yakiv Handziuk" due to the unit's recent losses, Ukraine's General Staff said on July 15.

The announcement came only a day after Azovstal defender and medic Kateryna Polishchuk, known under the nickname Ptashka ("bird"), called on Syrskyi and President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate the unit over the alleged misconduct of its commander, Bohdan Shevchuk.

"Since thousands of soldiers remain in the combat zone under Shevchuk's leadership, I ask you, Commander-in-Chief, to pay heed and conduct an internal investigation," Polishchuk wrote in a Facebook post on July 14, accusing Shevchuk of "criminal orders, negligence, actions that resulted in the deaths of a large number of troops," as well as careerism, removal of dissenting commanders, and other transgressions.

The General Staff's statement did not explicitly name Polishchuk nor Shevchuk and did not mention specific circumstances that led to the start of the investigation.

The 59th Brigade is deployed near Krasnohorivka in Donetsk Oblast, a front-line town under heavy pressure by Russian forces.

Lieutenant Colonel Bohdan Krotevych, one of the Azov Brigade's commanders, said on June 23 that he filed an official complaint to the State Bureau of Investigation calling for an investigation of one of the generals.

According to Ukrainska Pravda's undisclosed sources, the general in question was Sodol.

A Belfast conflict photographer has spoken of his experience in a Russian ambush whilst reporting on the war in Ukraine.

Conall Kearney had been commissioned by Ukrainian government funded United24 to join a unit on what was intended to be a simple reconnaissance mission along the frontline.

The attack in May this year lasted 14 hours with Mr Kearney sustaining numerous injuries.

Speaking to BBC News NI, he said he is "lucky to be alive".

Mr Kearney said he had always been interested in how the story of war and conflict is documented.

His job has seen him travel the world but his first forays into conflict photography were a lot closer to home, documenting "various riots and parades" in Belfast.

He later moved to Berlin and began to cover various protests and riots.

The photographer also reported on the Hong Kong 'Umbrella Revolution', as well as the 2022 Lebanon Election.

"It is like an addiction. You chase this buzz," Mr Kearney said.

"You've still got this genuine interest in the topic, but there is a thrill, especially when a situation is completely crazy and you come out unscathed with great photos.

"It's definitely something you chase too much at times."

Mr Kearney first visited Ukraine in 2018 and said he "instantly fell in love with the country".

When war broke out five years later, he described it as a "no brainer" that he had to go.

"It was a direct train from Berlin to the Ukrainian border; within a week I was on the Russian border."

Mr Kearney was one of last journalists in Bakhmut, a Ukrainian city captured by Russian forces in February 2023.

He saw both the peak of the battle and the Russian military entering the city.

He also witnessed the Russian advance in the Avdiivka region, as well as the siege of Kharkiv.

In May, Mr Kearney and a colleague joined the Kayfariki unit, a Ukrainian military group made up of left-wing FC Arsenal Kyiv fans.

For safety reasons, he withheld specific details of the location, though confirmed it occurred in the Donbas region.

Unbeknownst to the Ukrainian forces, Russia had identified the unit's location and had planned an attack.

It was not until the early hours of the final day that this plan was put into action.

Mr Kearney said his unit was bombarded for three hours.

"Once this ended, a convoy of tanks drove into our town. All hell broke loose."

This initiated 14 hours of back and forth gunfire, artillery and drones.

Mr Kearney estimated there were roughly 70 Russian soldiers, compared to the eight Ukrainian fighters.

He recalled that the Russians were so close he could hear them strategising.

Asking the commander what the plan should be, he was met with the response: "Dying is not part of the plan.

We’re going to escape, but it’s probably not going to work."

Outnumbered, injured, and quickly running out of ammunition, their situation was untenable.

"I accepted I was dead," said Mr Kearney.

When he asked how one of the injured soldiers felt, the only reply was: "I don’t feel anything, we’re already dead.

"Everybody was injured," said the photographer. "We could hear the Russians screaming for our blood.

"There was a point where the commander was like 'this is probably it'. When you hear something like that, I think back over my life and think 'I had a good run'."

'Beyond a miracle'
"Once night came we just sprinted out the back," said Mr Kearney.

He described how the unit ran three kilometres, facing Russian gunfire the entire time.

"How they didn’t hit any of us is beyond a miracle."

Eventually, the group escaped beyond the reach of the Russian guns and were rescued by Ukrainian troops.

They survived with zero casualties.

"I’m definitely one of the lucky ones," the photographer explained.

The Belfast man has already been back to Ukraine to catch up with the unit, which is now back on the frontline.

"I met them all. They were in pretty good spirits," he said.

During the ambush, Mr Kearney heard his comrades constantly repeating a phrase he could not understand.

"When it finally got translated, I found out it was that the guys saying 'I love you' to each other."

On July 15, Russia withdrew the last patrol ship of the Black Sea Fleet from the occupied Crimea, reported Dmytro Pletenchuk, spokesman for the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

"The last patrol ship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet is leaving our Crimea right now. Remember this day," he wrote.

As of June 17, Pletenchuk stated that a third of the Black Sea Fleet's ships had been disabled. He also said the Defense Forces were destroying some of them even after repairs.

Two allies of Russia's fired Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu are reported to have died mysteriously within a day of each other.

Last week, Magomed Khandayev, a 61-year-old Russian Defense Ministry official, and 52-year-old businessman Igor Kotelnikov were found dead. These were the latest in a series of mysterious deaths involving prominent Russian figures since Russian President Vladimir Putin's forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

Eva Merkacheva, a member of Russia's human rights council, said in a column for Moskovsky Komsomolets on July 12 that Kotelnikov died in a pretrial detention center in Moscow on July 8 after feeling unwell. He had been charged with bribing senior Russian Defense Ministry officials.

The cause of his death remains unclear, but Merkacheva added that Russian human rights activists say that the cell where the businessman was being held is typically overcrowded.

The cells are "small, hot in warm weather, cold in the winter. In addition, some detainees sit there all day," Merkacheva wrote.

"They were unable to save him—the 52-year-old man died, his heart stopped," she added.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Defense Ministry for comment by email.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, said that FSB investigators allegedly hoped to obtain testimony from Kotelnikov against former Russian Deputy Defense Minister Timur Ivanov, who was arrested on corruption charges in April.

Ivanov was arrested on suspicion of taking bribes, Russia's Investigative Committee said on April 23. He had held the post of Russian deputy defense minister since May 2016. His role involved asset management, overseeing the construction of ministry facilities, providing medical support for Russia's military, and managing troop housing.

VChK-OGPU said employees with Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) repeatedly visited Kotelnikov in the pretrial detention center "forcing him to admit guilt, to testify against Timur Ivanov and a number of other officials of the Ministry of Defense."

"However, Kotelnikov refused. Then the administration of the pretrial detention center began to pressure him. He was sent to the punishment cell, where he became ill. Two days later, doctors concluded that Kotelnikov could not be kept in solitary confinement due to chronic illnesses," the outlet said, adding that he was found dead the next morning. Newsweek couldn't independently verify these details.

A number of high-ranking military officials have been arrested since April, including Yuri Kuznetsov, the head of the Russian Defense Ministry's personnel department. Meanwhile, Shoigu was replaced as defense minister after holding the position for 12 years, in a surprise shake-up of the department.

Russian state-run agencies reported the death of Khandayev on July 9. He had served as head of the state examination department of Russia's Defense Ministry since June 2023. The cause of his death or where he died has not been disclosed.

Russian newspaper Kommersant reported that Khandayev was a direct subordinate to Ivanov. The independent Russian news outlet The Moscow Times said that it is unclear if Khandayev was able to testify in Ivanov's case.

Sources in the Kremlin government told the publication that the recent push to "clean up" the Defense Ministry was launched by the FSB on Putin's orders.

Ambush near Sudzha
A month ago, not far from this spot in the neighboring Kursk region, Ukrainian troops defeated a large convoy of Russian vehicles near the border.

“Malibu” attack drones of the 53rd Brigade and “Wings to Hell” of the 103rd Brigade Attack Drones Units defeated a convoy of 15 trucks with FPV drones, hitting the lead vehicle and the green flag vehicle, and then began to finish off the disorganized occupiers.

The drone operators conducted reconnaissance and coordination with the help of an operational reconnaissance drone Shark, which monitored the situation around them throughout the attack.

Some vehicles and Russian soldiers managed to escape the ambush, avoiding drone strikes, but most of the convoy was destroyed.

In verschillende Nederlandse gemeenten is onrust ontstaan omdat Defensie zoekt naar meer ruimte om munitie op te slaan. Defensie wil naast de al bestaande munitiedepots ��n nieuwe grootschalig opslag, of twee kleinere opslagplaatsen. Daarvoor heeft het acht locaties op het oog, maar de gemeenten waarin die locaties liggen zien het stuk voor stuk niet zitten.

"Ik dacht eerst dat het een grapje was, ik keek echt in vertwijfeling naar mijn brievenbus", zegt Dorien Brussen uit Toldijk. Haar huis zou moeten worden gesloopt als de opslag in Hummelo komt. Ook omwonenden van andere mogelijke locaties vrezen dat zij hun huis moeten verlaten vanwege strenge veiligheidsregels rondom zo'n munitiedepot.

In totaal heeft defensie zeventig hectare nodig voor de grootschalige opslag. De locatie moet aan best wat eisen voldoen: zo moet er bij voorkeur een goede aansluiting op hoofdwegen, binnenvaart en spoorwegen zijn, moet er zo weinig mogelijk bebouwing in de omgeving zijn en kan de locatie bijvoorbeeld niet onder een laagvliegroute liggen. Op basis van onder meer die voorwaarden is defensie tot een achttal mogelijke locaties gekomen.

Secretaris-generaal van de NAVO Jens Stoltenberg zei eerder deze maand nog dat de wereld steeds gevaarlijker wordt. Dat vraagt wat van het bondgenootschap en ook van de Nederlandse defensie. Een van de belangrijkste redenen waarom de organisatie moet uitbreiden, is omdat andere NAVO-landen tegen de grenzen van hun opslagcapaciteit aanlopen.

Nederland is als kustland met grote havens een strategische locatie, mocht de munitie snel vervoerd moeten worden. Het kabinet wil begin volgend jaar beslissen waar de opslag komt.

De gemeenten waarin de mogelijke locaties gelegen zijn, zien de nood van de krijgsmacht, maar staan niet te springen om een depot in de eigen regio. De gemeente Buren geeft aan dat ze 'grote bezwaren' heeft, in Dalfsen zijn er 'grote vraagtekens' en in de gemeente Dinkelland is het college van B&W er 'op zijn zachtst gezegd niet blij mee' dat Weerselo als mogelijke locatie aangewezen is. Ook in de gemeenten Dronten, Zevenaar en Bronckhorst is het enthousiasme niet groot en beginnen bewoners zich te roeren.

Zone A
Als de opslag in Hummelo komt, moet niet alleen het huis van Dorien Brussen tegen de vlakte: in Hummelo en Toldijk zouden zo'n honderd huizen moeten wijken. Ook op de andere mogelijke locaties betekent de komst van een opslag dat bewoners moeten verhuizen.

Het huis van Brussen staat in 'zone A', dat is de zone die het dichtst tegen de mogelijke munitieopslag ligt. Defensie hanteert vier verschillende veiligheidszones rondom de depots. In zone A mag niet gewoond en gewerkt en worden en mag geen transport plaatsvinden, in zone B mag alleen niet gewoond worden en in zone C mogen geen gebouwen staan waar tijdens een groot deel van de dag veel personen aanwezig zijn, zoals een school of caf�.

In Toldijk voelt Brussen zich "in de steek gelaten". "We begrijpen heus dat defensie ruimte nodig heeft, maar de manier waarop het nu gaat is wel heel bijzonder."

Brussen is, naast haar werk in het onderwijs, secretaris van Toldieks Belang. Die bewonersvereniging gaat vanavond een petitie aanbieden aan de gemeente. "We hebben ook op allerlei plekken spandoeken opgehangen en geflyerd tijdens het dorpsfeest."

Toldieks Belang doet dus actief een beroep op de gemeente Bronckhorst, waar Hummelo en Toldijk onder vallen. Brussen: "We krijgen signalen dat het nog niet hoog genoeg op de agenda staat daar."

Burgemeester Marja van der Tas is het daar niet mee eens: "Wij hebben er alle begrip voor dat bewoners geschrokken zijn van het feit dat we nu een mogelijke locatie zijn."

De burgemeester vertelt dat ze de communicatie vanuit defensie richting het college van B&W in eerste instantie niet erg duidelijk vond: "Ze meldden ons pas erg laat dat er een informatiebijeenkomst vanuit defensie georganiseerd zou worden." Datzelfde gold voor de gemeente Dinkelland, zegt een woordvoerder daar.

Ruimte voor Defensie
Defensie is de komende tijd niet alleen op zoek naar een plek voor extra munitieopslag. Ook nieuwe ruimte voor oefenterreinen, laagvlieggebieden voor helikopters en landingsbanen zijn nodig. Dat is allemaal onderdeel van het Nationaal Programma Ruimte voor Defensie, het overkoepelende project waarbinnen defensie de mogelijkheden onderzoekt.

Naast de grootschalige munitiedepots zoekt de krijgsmacht ook nog kleinere opslagplaatsen voor munitie. Die moeten sneller vervoerd en gebruikt kunnen worden. Hiervoor wordt vooral gekeken naar de provincie Groningen, vanwege de goede toegang tot de Eemshaven. In Groningen is vooralsnog weinig tumult ontstaan naar aanleiding van de plannen.

The "plan for ending the war" of the head of the Hungarian government is reportedly on the desk of every EU prime minister. The political director stated that the results of the trips to Kyiv and Moscow made it clear that Ukraine and Russia are very "determined to fight."

"And without the intervention of external mediators, we will, unfortunately, see very violent destruction in the coming months," Balazs Orb�n added.

He emphasized that this is why Hungary started negotiations with China, Turkiye and former US President Trump.

"If Europe wants peace and wants to have a decisive say in settling the war and stopping the bloodshed, then a change of course must be developed and implemented now," Balazs Orb�n said.

"Hungary is the only country that can negotiate with each side," he stressed.

On July 5, Orb�n went to Moscow to see Vladimir Putin. After that, the Ukrainian president rejected the possibility of Hungary's mediation.

On July 8, Orb�n visited China where he met with the country's president, Xi Jinping. According to Orb�n, China is "a key force in creating conditions for peace in the Russo-Ukrainian war."

After meeting with Erdogan on the sidelines of the NATO summit, Orb�n said that Turkiye is "indispensable in the peace process."

On July 12, he met with Trump, who again promised to "solve the problem."

On July 11, Zelenskyy, commenting on Orb�n's meetings, said that not all leaders can conduct negotiations, as for this they need to have certain powers and strength.

The 47-year-old, who will also step down as leader of the liberal Reform Party, was the first female prime minister in Estonia's history. She was chosen by EU leaders to replace Josep Borrell as the bloc's top diplomat after the recent EU elections.

Kallas has always been a hawkish critic of what she calls neighboring Russia's expansionist aims, especially since Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Deputy Be�ta Jur�k from the Progres�vne Slovensko party proposed to add a resolution condemning the Russian attack on July 8 to the agenda of the parliament.

At this, the deputy from SMER-SD, Jana Vaľov�, asked if Jur�k was there, the journalists noted.

Only 41 legislators spoke in favor of the resolution, so it did not pass.

On the morning of July 8, the Russians launched a massive missile attack on Kyiv – the Okhmatdyt Children's Hospital, in particular, came under enemy fire.

On July 9, the SBU received new evidence that the Russian troops hit Okhmatdyt with an Kh-101 cruise missile on July 8.

On the same day, the rescue work at the hospital was completed – then the death of two people and 32 wounded was confirmed. On July 10, the death of a child who was in intensive care during the attack was reported – after the impact, the boy was transported to one of the Kyiv hospitals.

BRUSSEL (ANP) - De Europese Commissie geeft een ernstig en ongekend signaal af aan Hongarije dat het land te ver is gegaan met de recente reizen van premier Viktor Orb�n naar onder meer Rusland en China. De commissie zal daarom de komende tijd de vergaderingen boycotten die Hongarije als EU-voorzitter in Boedapest organiseert.

Voorlopig nemen alleen ambtenaren aan dergelijke vergaderingen deel en geen Eurocommissarissen. Dat heeft de woordvoerder van de Europese Commissie op X laten weten.

De recente reizen van de Hongaarse premier Viktor Orb�n naar Rusland en China zijn verkeerd gevallen bij de Europese Commissie, omdat Hongarije vanaf 1 juli tijdelijk EU-voorzitter is. Orb�n had daarom over dergelijke reizen moeten overleggen, vinden veel betrokken partijen in Brussel. In plaats daarvan heeft Orb�n moedwillig de suggestie gewekt dat Hongarije namens de EU op "vredesmissie" was om tot een internationale oplossing te komen voor de oorlog tussen Rusland en Oekra�ne, bijvoorbeeld doordat hij op sociale media over de reis berichtte met het logo van het EU-voorzitterschap. Maar de andere EU-landen en de Europese Commissie wisten daar niets van en willen ook Poetin niet in de kaart spelen.
De Europese Commissie brengt ook geen officieel bezoek meer aan Boedapest, aldus het bericht op X. Een officieel bezoek van de Europese Commissie is wel gebruikelijk als een EU-land voor een half jaar het tijdelijke EU-voorzitterschap op zich neemt. Hongarije is op 1 juli als tijdelijke voorzitter begonnen.

U.S. journalist and author Masha Gessen was convicted in absentia Monday by a Moscow court on charges of spreading false information about the military and was sentenced to eight years in prison.

The Moscow-born Gessen, a staff writer for The New Yorker and a columnist for The New York Times who lives in the U.S., is a prominent critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin and an award-winning writer.

Russian police put Gessen on a wanted list in December, and Russian media reported the case was based on statements they made about atrocities in the Ukrainian town of Bucha in an interview with a popular Russian online blogger.

In the interview, which has been viewed more than 6.5 million times on YouTube since September 2022, Gessen and blogger Yury Dud discussed atrocities in the Ukrainian town of Bucha earlier that year.

On Saturday, 51 Nobel laureates, including former Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov and Belarusian author Svetlana Alexievich, penned an open letter to religious leaders and various international bodies calling for a ceasefire to be observed in the 55 armed conflicts currently going on in the world for the duration of the Summer Olympics Games in Paris.

Russians are getting really fed up with the Ukrainian crew of that Yakovlev Yak-52 training plane that has been dogfighting with, and shooting down, Russian surveillance drones—World War I-style.

In three months, two aviators riding in a Yak-52—a front-seat pilot and a back-seat gunner—have taken out at least 12 Russian drones, if you believe the kill markings the crew has painted on the side of the 1970s-vintage plane.

“Isn’t it time to shoot him down?” one Russian blogger wrote.

A propeller-driven Yak-52 doesn’t paint a very big picture on the radar screens of Russia’s beleaguered long-range air defense batteries. And even if you damage a Yak-52 by, say, ramming it with a drone—the crew could probably still land the plane.

Earlier this month, another Russian blogger complained about the Yak-52 crew “firing at our UAVs like it’s a shooting gallery” over the city of Odesa in southern Ukraine.

It wasn’t a new problem. Apparently searching for an efficient method of eliminating $100,000 Russian drones without firing a $4-million Patriot missile or some other pricey air defense munition, back in April the Ukrainians began taking to the air in that Yak-52, maneuvering to within shotgun range of intruding drones—and blasting them out of the air.

It worked so well that, earlier this month, the Ukrainian intelligence directorate began training gunners to hunt Russian unmanned aerial vehicles from locally-made Aeroprakt A-22 sport planes. The Yakovlev crew’s successful hunts have inspired a whole new anti-drone tactic.

The Russians are losing patience as their losses pile up. “The Yak-52 flew over Odessa and with high efficiency shot down our reconnaissance UAVs for a week, causing laughter in some circles,” the blogger wrote. “This has not been funny to UAV operators and us for a long time.”

But it’s not clear what the Russian military can do about the Yak-52. Its patrol zone is at least 50 miles from the nearest Russian position. Yet the closest Russian air defense batteries are probably much farther away, as Ukrainian drone and missile raids continue to deplete their numbers and drive them farther from the front line.

In any event, a Yak-52 might be tough to detect. One 1976 study found that a Cessna 172—a propeller plane similar to a Yak-52 in size and shape—presents a radar cross-section of less than a square meter from certain angles. That’s a quarter the radar cross-section of a typical fighter jet.

The Russian operators of the very drones the Yak-52 crew has been hunting could try to ram the Ukrainian plane. It wouldn’t be unprecedented. On many occasions in Russia’s 28-month wider war on Ukraine, Russian and Ukrainian crews have downed enemy drones by running their own drones into them.

But it’s one thing for two drones each weighing just a few pounds to tangle in mid-air: either could destroy the other. But smash a 20-pound ZALA surveillance drone into a 1.5-ton Yak-52 and the damage might not be catastrophic.

Thousands of Ukrainian refugees who fled to the UK seeking sanctuary after Russia’s invasion have been placed at risk of homelessness and exploitation in the UK, according to the British Red Cross.

A report by the humanitarian organisation found that while overall the UK government’s schemes provided a lifeline to families seeking sanctuary, some Ukrainians faced weaknesses in safeguarding procedures and a lack of sufficient training and ongoing support for hosts.

Since the start of the Homes for Ukraine scheme in 2022, more than 9,000 out of about 200,000 families accommodated in the UK have been placed at risk of homelessness. This is often due to a breakdown of relationships with host families and difficulties in accessing the private housing market.

Ukrainians were found to be four times as likely as the general population to experience homelessness. Between February and mid-June 2024 there was a weekly average of 379 new arrivals from Ukraine.

Some particularly concerning examples identified in the British Red Cross report, titled Finding a Safe Home, include:
• One Ukrainian woman who applied to all 65 housing associations in Glasgow before finding somewhere to live.
• Some people who were made homeless at short notice by host families and who slept rough. One woman was asked to leave at midnight and slept on a beach with her belongings.
• One woman who was offered accommodation online that, on inspection by a voluntary organisation, had been set up for sexual exploitation with a lock on the outside of the door and video cameras in the bedroom.
• One woman who lived in six different places in the space of two years, returned to Ukraine when she couldn’t find accommodation here, and then came back to the UK when the war escalated.
• One family taking part in the family hosting scheme who had three generations of people sharing one bed.

The Red Cross is calling for better safeguarding arrangements for accommodation schemes, and for the government to build on positive practice from the Ukraine accommodation schemes and apply lessons learned to future refugee resettlement schemes.

The report also calls for more help for displaced people to access the private rented sector, an increase in affordable housing, and a national integration strategy that promotes more equal support for all displaced people.

Sal Copley, the executive director of communications and external affairs at the British Red Cross, said: “Over two years ago people in Ukraine had their lives turned upside down. They needed our support and compassion, and the UK became a place of safety for many thousands.

“However, that safety has not always offered the stability people need to rebuild their lives. Too many families have ended up sleeping rough or living in places where they have felt unsafe. This has had a damaging impact on mental health and wellbeing. We need to improve the support available for Ukrainians here in the UK and learn from the Ukraine schemes so we can create more effective safe routes in the future.”

A government spokesperson said: “The UK’s support for Ukraine is ironclad. Homes for Ukraine provides an important route for people seeking sanctuary. We will carefully consider the deeply concerning report and its findings.”

Ukraine’s Vector reconnaissance drones have started to be equipped with artificial intelligence sensors.

The German company Quantum-Systems, which manufactures these UAVs, reported this on its official website.

The update improves optical navigation, automatic object detection, and identification.

The company said that an updated AI Receptor sensor with artificial intelligence (AI) has been launched on Vector drones in Ukraine.

The new update package is based on Nvidia’s Jetson Orin chip and several sensors. This update enables optical navigation day and night and in low visibility conditions, as well as automated object recognition and identification using artificial intelligence.

Quantum-Systems explained that Receptor AI provides autonomous flight at night and in bad weather thanks to infrared visual navigation. The technology of object sensors has also been significantly improved.

It is noted that hardware and software updates now allow for better object detection, classification, identification, and tracking.

“We are implementing the upgrade without any weight changes and with the same range,” Daniel Kneifel, Director of Software Development at Quantum-Systems, says.

Mice and rat infestations in Russian dugouts have reached an all-time high so a “military-patriotic club” from Kazan is doing their bit for the war effort by sending cats to aid the Russians in their Ukraine invasion.

During the Tatarstan National Television (TNV) telethon “Join the Army of Victory!” on Monday, July 15 members of the Kazan-based “Legend” military-patriotic club (MPC) spoke about the rodent infestation in Russian dugouts and bunkers.

Vladimir Malygin head of the MPC together with his wife Elena and students Mark Dedkov and Igor Belov, accompanied by two of their feline allies Ryzhik and Fighter, talked about the problems facing Moscow’s troops in Russia’s Northeast Military District, particularly in the Donetsk region and its mission to send cats to the front line.

Malygin said: “Our fighters complained to me that mice were bothering them. Cats saved the Hermitage [museum in St Petersburg] from rats and mice during World War II, and I thought, why not send them cats as well.”

He said that Ryzhik and Fighter would soon be on their way as the next batch, the first having been sent last autumn.

Asked why Russian cats were needed as surely there were many Ukrainian strays, Malygin replied:

“A fighter told me that when he returns from a fight, his Russian cat runs towards him and purrs. He sees a mouse, catches it, and again runs to warm himself in the soldier’s arms.” He said this companionship was just as important as the killing of the rodents.

He went on to say that they needed to send cats from Tatarstan because “… local Donetsk cats stay away from the trenches and are running through the fields where there are many dead soldiers.”

By implication he was suggesting that it was easier for the cats to feed on the corpses of those killed in battle rather than by hunting mice.

The two schoolboy members of the MPC, Igor Belov and Mark Dedkov, were asked if they wanted to join the military when they were old enough. Belov said he would, “For me, the Motherland is my family, my loved ones. Everything I have.”

Dedkov was less certain and said: “I haven’t decided yet what I would like to become, but for me the Motherland is my parents, grandparents, our country Russia.”

The head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov has recently raised the bounty for volunteers for President Vladimir Putin’s so-called “special military operation” in Ukraine to 1.5 million Rubles ($170,000) – it’s not certain whether the cats will be rewarded for their service.

A KyivPost report in December highlighted the growing problem of rodents in trenches that had been occupied for long periods by Russian forces. Not only were mice eating food, which was often in short supply, and damaging clothing and equipment, but were also responsible for outbreaks of “mouse fever” – hemorrhagic fever.

The Azov One NGO, with the support of the Prytula Foundation, has transferred a batch of armored vehicles to the 12th “Azov” Special Forces Brigade.

Serhiy Prytula reported on this.

The donors transferred 15 FV432 armored personnel carriers and 2 FV434 armored repair and recovery vehicles worth UAH 77 million to the soldiers.

The funds were raised by the rear service and fundraising department of the Azov One. With the support of Prytula Foundation’s specialists, they were purchased and brought from the UK to Ukraine.

“Azov One” turned to us for help because we have expertise in purchasing armored vehicles. Together with volunteers, we found the necessary equipment in warehouses in the UK, obtained an export license, and brought it to Ukraine,” Prytula said.

The FV432 is a tracked armored personnel carrier developed in the 1960s for the British Army.

The vehicle is lightly armored, with a circumferential hull thickness of 13 mm, which should provide protection against shrapnel and small arms. The maximum speed reaches 60 km/h.

The vehicle’s crew consists of three people. The landing compartment has five seats on both sides and can accommodate ten soldiers.

The vehicle is armed with a machine gun that can be operated from inside the vehicle or from an open hatch.

The FV432 is a member of the FV430 family of vehicles and is equipped to evacuate and field-repair armored vehicles.

Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) claimed on July 16 that it had hacked nearly 100 Russian websites that support the Kremlin's war effort, taking them offline and replacing their homepages with a picture of a bloody pig's head.

The intelligence agency said the operation was carried out on July 15 with the help of "the volunteer hacker community."

"The cyberattack was aimed at destroying internal information of companies that serve Russian public sector clients involved in the war against Ukraine," it said in a post on Telegram.

"Today we signed two important agreements, among other agreements in the defence industry. A new ammunition plant will be built in Ukraine; the [relevant] agreement was signed by Sellier & Bellot [a Czech firearms ammunition manufacturer – ed.] and Ukroboronservis [Ukrainian Defence Service, a Ukrainian state company focused on the import and export of military products and services – ed]," Shmyhal announced.

The second agreement concerns the production of Colt CZ Group assault rifles in Ukraine.

"This is an agreement between Česk� Zbrojovka [a Czech armament manufacturer – ed.] and a Ukrainian company, which I will not name for security reasons," Shmyhal added.

According to Shmyhal, these agreements "show a high level of interest in cooperation with our defence industry".

It is not a secret that Russia is looking at the way Ukraine defends itself using military aid supplies from its Western partners. Russia sees that and is engulfed with envy and despair. However, Russia also has friends. Iran supplied kamikaze drones to Russia, while North Korea provided artillery ammunition, missiles and, possibly, other weapons. There are signs that Russia is also receiving aid from China. However, it is not enough, because losses are just too great.

Russia has stepped up its worldwide search for Soviet weapons and other military equipment, writes Ukrainian military and political analyst Oleksandr Kovalenko. This is somewhat reminiscent of the efforts of the US and other Ukrainian allies – they were looking into old Soviet weapon supplies in other countries and tried to bring them to Ukraine. Ukrainian and Russian forces are very familiar with Soviet weapons, have parts for them and can push them into service relatively quickly.

The Sudanese Armed Forces have a bunch of equipment that would be of interest to Russia. Aforementioned T-55 and T-72 tanks serve alongside BRDM-2 Caiman from Belarus, a bunch of different BMPs and BTRs, while the Sudanese artillerymen are firing the D-30 quite regularly. Russia might also be interested in Sudan’s Mi-8s, although these are fairly common and Russia probably have plenty of them for now.

Kovalenko points out that the situation of the Russian military industry is actually not as good as Russia’s media would like to claim. “Approximately 90% of the equipment that Russia is sending to fight in Ukraine is not new, but refurbished old Soviet equipment from warehouses and storage facilities. In the third year of the war in Ukraine, the stock of Soviet equipment there has decreased significantly,” Kovalenko added.

Sudan is probably not the only country that Russia is looking into for old Soviet armoured machines. Sadly, Russia has been increasing its influence in Africa and there are a lot of Soviet weapons in these countries.

The Ukrainian company Wild Hornets has presented a Queen Hornets multifunctional unmanned platform, which can carry up to 9.5 kilograms and is made of 65% Ukrainian components.

The news was published on the company’s website.

The Queen Hornets is a multifunctional 15-inch FPV drone designed for heavy cargo delivery. At the same time, it is faster and quieter than conventional multi-rotor bombers.

“At the beginning of 2024, Kyrylo Veres, commander of the K-2 battalion, asked us to create an affordable FPV bomber that would carry up to six kilograms of payload and cost the same as a few regular kamikaze drones. We set out to bring this idea to life,” the developers say.

Three months of work, hundreds of tests, two dozen broken units, and then the launch of the pre-production batch. Then, successful combat tests at the front and the start of serial production.

The Queen Hornets is a multifunctional platform that can be used as a bomber, kamikaze, transport drone, or remote miner of logistic routes.

Militarnyi previously reported that the Ukrainian military started using a new model of a heavy FPV attack drone capable of carrying a 5-kilogram warhead.

On July 16, two Shahed drones launched by Russian forces flew into Belarusian territory. One of them has traveled more than 300 kilometers.

"A drone-kamikaze of the Shahed type, which entered Belarus at 8:40 AM heading towards Narowla, has likely reached Mogilev by now. It was intercepted at 09:15 by an Su-30 fighter from the Baranovichi airbase, and at 09:10 by a Mi-24 helicopter from the Machulishchy airbase," reported Belarusian monitoring channel.

Analysts report that the drone was circling over Belarus and has flown over 300 km in total. This marks the fourth drone-kamikaze to enter Belarusian airspace since July 11, and the second on July 16 alone.

Earlier, on the night of July 16, another Shahed entered Belarus near the village of Bila Soroka, within the territory of the Polissya Radiation and Ecological Reserve, moving north towards Khoyniki. The drone then turned southeast, bypassed Bragin, and headed towards the town of Komarin.

At 5 AM, it left Belarusian airspace and turned to Ukrainian territory for the second time in the night.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported on Tuesday that from the evening of July 15 through July 16, the air defense "destroyed two Shahed UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicle] used for strikes, while two other Shahed drones were lost in Belarusian airspace."
