Murderer freed from jail to fight in Ukraine returns home after just three months
A man from Vladivostok who was sentenced to 24 years in prison for rape and murder in 2022 is back at liberty again just three months after being granted early release from jail to fight in Ukraine, Telegram channel VL.ru reported on Tuesday.

Georgy Povilayko, who raped and murdered mother-of-two Anna Koshulko in a car park as she was getting ready to leave for work in August 2021, was found guilty of murder, rape, sexual assault, car theft and using violence against the authorities the following year.

In October, however, Povilayko signed a contract with the Russian Defence Ministry and secured himself an early release to fight in Ukraine.

The victim’s husband, Alexander Koshulko, told Novaya Europe that he had only learnt of Povilayko’s release online, and that he had immediately called on the authorities to return him to jail last year.

While on trial, Povilayko appealed for leniency on the grounds that had a young child to support, though it subsequently emerged that he owed almost 1.5 million rubles (¤15,575) in unpaid alimony payments.
Wat kan hier nu mis mee gaan lol. En wat een middelvinger naar de familie en kennissen van het slachtoffer zeg. 3 maanden aan het front en hij is op vrije voeten.

CIA tries to recruit spies in Russia via social media
The US Central Intelligence Agency has released a new Russian-language video in which it tries to convince Russian intelligence officers to defect to the United States and work as double agents.

Source: European Pravda with reference to the CIA on Twitter (X)

Details: A video by US intelligence officers posted on social media tries to appeal to patriotic Russians who work in the intelligence community and may feel betrayed by the corruption in the elite and poorly supplied Russian Armed Forces.

The fictional protagonist of the video is a 35-year-old man, an employee of the Russian Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), who considers himself a patriot who loves Russia and once served as a paratrooper.

"Do I have the courage to stand up to this betrayal?" he asks, before saying that the real enemy is inside Russia in the form of the corrupt leadership and the elite.

"The top leadership has sold the country for palaces and yachts, while our soldiers chew rotten potatoes and shoot with prehistoric weapons. Our people are forced to pay bribes just to find a job," the man said.

The "Russian intelligence officer" says his patriotism pushed him to act and cooperate with the CIA, and the final shot of the video shows him contacting the CIA by mobile phone.

"Those around you may not want to hear the truth. But we do. You are not powerless," the recruitment video says.

CIA Director William Burns said in July that some Russians' discontent with the war in Ukraine was creating a rare opportunity for spy recruitment and that the CIA was not going to miss it.

The CIA launched a campaign to persuade those dissatisfied with the war in Ukraine and the lives of Russian citizens to share classified information.

Nadezhdin’s campaign team surpasses the 100,000 signatures required for candidacy
The team of liberal politician Boris Nadezhdin announced on Tuesday that it had successfully collected the 100,000 signatures required to advance his candidacy in Russia’s March presidential election to the next stage.

Unprecedented scenes of Russians patiently waiting in line in major cities across Russia over the weekend have boosted Nadezhdin’s profile enormously, with opinion leaders, including politicians Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Maxim Katz voicing their support for the outlier.

By midday Tuesday, Nadezhdin’s candidacy had received 101,607 signatures of support from Russian citizens, though Nadezhdin has told campaign staff to continue collecting signatures until they reach 150,000. Once collected, the signatures must be submitted to the Central Election Committee (CEC) for verification.

“We have already collected 101,000 signatures, but they’re not perfect. We need to submit 105,000 flawless signatures to the CEC that they can’t possibly find fault with, which is why we need to collect as many as possible,” Nadezhdin wrote on his Telegram channel on Tuesday.

Sources in Nadezhdin’s team confirmed to independent media outlets Meduza and Dozhd that the signatures they currently have are insufficient as many won’t meet the stringent criteria of the CEC, and are likely to be rejected as “defective”.

Nadezhdin has dubbed himself a principled opponent of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose politics he blames for “dragging Russia back to the past”. A staunch critic of the war in Ukraine, Nadezhdin argues in his manifesto that: “Not a single one of its aims has been met, and won’t be without huge damage to the economy and an irreparable blow to Russian demographics.”

We Did a Little Magic’ – How Ukrainian Partisans Seduced Russian Soldiers Then Poisoned Them
Partisans in Mariupol told Kyiv Post that Russian soldiers fell for a ruse involving some unpleasant vodka and a fake social media account for an "imaginary charming woman."

Partisans in occupied Mariupol have told Kyiv Post how they created an “imaginary charming woman” on a social media site to obtain information about Russian troops which they then used to poison them.

Using the fake profile on the Russian social network Vkontakte (VK), the partisans learned that vodka was particularly sought after by Moscow’s soldiers as a ban on them buying it had been imposed in the city.

“They are so eager to meet women that their VK is like Tinder,” a partisan told Kyiv Post on condition of anonymity.

Another partisan posing as a vodka seller was then dispatched for the next stage of the operation.

“We did a little magic with a syringe,” a partisan told Kyiv Post on condition of anonymity, describing how they poisoned the drink.

According to the partisans, three Russian soldiers were killed and more than a dozen others taken ill.

They added that the person who bought the vodka from the partisan supplier had been “thrown into a pit” in order to find out who sold it to them but they were confident they would not be traced, in part because of the winter weather.

“Winter. Hoods. Hats. Scarves - you won't recognize the person afterwards,” they said. “Black clothes and all that.

“In summer, it's almost impossible, but now is our time for such actions.”

As for the fake social media account, “the phone they used is already at the bottom of the Kalmius River.”

Kyiv Post could not independently verify the account but partisans are highly active in occupied areas of Ukraine and several similar stories have surfaced since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Oscar nomination for ’20 Days in Mariupol’ is a first for the 178-year-old Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — “20 Days in Mariupol,” Mstyslav Chernov’s harrowing chronicle of the besieged Ukrainian city and the international journalists who remained there after Russia’s invasion, has been nominated for best documentary at the Academy Awards, handing The Associated Press its first Oscar nomination in the 178-year-old news organization’s history.

The film, a co-production between the AP and PBS’ “Frontline,” was shot during the first three weeks of the war in Ukraine, in early 2022. Chernov, a Ukrainian journalist and filmmaker, arrived in Mariupol one hour before Russia began bombarding the port city. With him were photographer Evgeniy Maloletka and field producer Vasilisa Stepanenko.

The images and stories they captured — the death of a 4-year-old girl, freshly dug mass graves, the bombing of a maternity hospital — unflinchingly documented the grim, relentless realities of the unfolding siege.

“Despite extremely challenging and deeply personal circumstances, AP’s Mariupol team offered the world an essential window into the Russia-Ukraine war as it was beginning to unfold,” AP Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Julie Pace said in a statement. “That the academy has chosen to recognize ’20 Days in Mariupol’ is a testament to the power of eyewitness journalism and the bravery of the journalists on the ground. We are incredibly proud of Mstyslav Chernov, Evgeniy Maloletka, Vasilisa Stepanenko and the entire ‘20 Days in Mariupol’ team.”

The work of Chernov, Maloletka, Stepanenko and Lori Hinnant last year won the Pulitzer Prize for public service and featured prominently in a Pulitzer for breaking news photography. Since the Sundance Film Festival premiere of “20 Days in Mariupol” a year ago, Chernov’s film has been hailed as one of the most important nonfiction films of the year. It’s also been nominated by the BAFTAs, the Producers Guild and the Directors Guild for best documentary, and the Academy also shortlisted it for best international film.

Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine is nearing the two-year mark. Fighting through the winter is mired along a 1,500-kilometer (930-mile) front line. In recent months, Russian aerial attacks have sharply increased civilian casualties.

The war in Ukraine and other conflicts, including the war between Israel and Hamas, have been particularly dangerous for journalists. In December, the International Federation of Journalists said 94 journalists were killed around the world in 2023 and almost 400 were imprisoned.
