What Can the IDF Do about Hamas Tunnels?
If the Israel Defense Forces conduct a ground campaign in Gaza, the threat of Hamas tunnels will be one of the most significant challenges to contend with. Many miles of these tunnels crisscross below the surface of Gaza, some as deep as 230 feet underground. Collectively, they offer Hamas fighters the means to protect themselves against the Israeli offensive, maneuver undetected below the surface, and launch attacks before returning to the security of the tunnels.
But what can Israeli forces do about the tunnels when they encounter them? Is it feasible to seal them? Can they be destroyed with bunker-buster munitions or other explosives? Are there other ways to render them unusable? The answers to these questions are complicated, and to explore them, John Spencer welcomes Dr. Daphne Richemond-Barak back to the Urban Warfare Project Podcast for this special episode. She is a professor at the Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy, and Strategy at Reichman University, the author of the book Underground Warfare, and the creator of the International Working Group on Subterranean Warfare.

What Can the IDF Do about Hamas Tunnels?
If the Israel Defense Forces conduct a ground campaign in Gaza, the threat of Hamas tunnels will be one of the most significant challenges to contend with. Many miles of these tunnels crisscross below the surface of Gaza, some as deep as 230 feet underground. Collectively, they offer Hamas fighters the means to protect themselves against the Israeli offensive, maneuver undetected below the surface, and launch attacks before returning to the security of the tunnels.
But what can Israeli forces do about the tunnels when they encounter them? Is it feasible to seal them? Can they be destroyed with bunker-buster munitions or other explosives? Are there other ways to render them unusable? The answers to these questions are complicated, and to explore them, John Spencer welcomes Dr. Daphne Richemond-Barak back to the Urban Warfare Project Podcast for this special episode. The Times’s initial accounts attributed the claim of Israeli responsibility to Palestinian officials, and noted that the Israeli military said it was investigating the blast. However, the early versions of the coverage — and the prominence it received in a headline, news alert and social media channels — relied too heavily on claims by Hamas, and did not make clear that those claims could not immediately be verified. The report left readers with an incorrect impression about what was known and how credible the account was.quote:

The Times continued to update its coverage as more information became available, reporting the disputed claims of responsibility and noting that the death toll might be lower than initially reported. Within two hours, the headline and other text at the top of the website reflected the scope of the explosion and the dispute over responsibility.
Given the sensitive nature of the news during a widening conflict, and the prominent promotion it received, Times editors should have taken more care with the initial presentation, and been more explicit about what information could be verified. Newsroom leaders continue to examine procedures around the biggest breaking news events — including for the use of the largest headlines in the digital report — to determine what additional safeguards may be warranted.

Mocht dit een oorlog tussen Isreal+US vs Hamas+Hezbolla+Iran worden. Wat gaat Europa dan doen?
Na het zien van dat filmpje weet ik niet of we zo achter Israël moeten staan zoals we nu doen.
Dit is veel te gevaarlijk. In het fimpje hebben ze het er ook over dat Turkije mee kan gaan doen. Als dat gebeurt en Rusland en China doen ook mee gaat het helemaal loos.
Of ben ik nu te pessimistisch?

Tldl; Soldaten in de tunnels sturen is een slecht idee, maar zal waarschijnlijk wel gaan gebeuren (ivm gegijzelden). Evacuatie zodat airstrikes gericht op de tunnels meer ruimte krijgen, maar sommige zitten erg diep. Vernietiging van de tunnels is belangrijk om toekomstig gebruik te voorkomen. Twee componenten bommen bestaande uit twee vloeistoffen die ter plekke gemixt kunnen worden gaan waarschijnlijk veel gebruikt worden. De gegijzelde mensen zitten in de tunnels. Uitroken en gas gebruiken ligt in Israël uiterst gevoelig, om hopelijk duidelijke redenen.quote:
