PSV kon bij de loting op Rangers FC/Servette FC of Sporting Braga/Backa Topola stuiten. Deze clubs spelen ook nog een derde voorronde. De Eindhovenaren volgen - als nummer twee van de Eredivisie van vorig seizoen - de League Route, het pad voor clubs die geen kampioen werden.
Vorig seizoen moest PSV het in de laatste voorronde afleggen tegen Rangers FC, dat toen werd geleid door Giovanni van Bronckhorst. De Eredivisionist speelde in Schotland met 2-2 gelijk, maar verloor een week later in eigen huis met 0-1. Bij Rangers spelen tegenwoordig onder anderen Cyriel Dessers, Sam Lammers en Danilo.
PSV moet eerst nog Sturm Graz over twee wedstrijden verslaan. Dinsdag wacht de heenwedstrijd in Eindhoven. Op 15 augustus staat de return in Oostenrijk op het programma.
Bij de kampioenenroute werd het Antwerp FC van trainer Mark van Bommel gekoppeld aan AEK en Dinamo Zagreb. Vanwege de ongeplaatste status kon de Belgische ploeg ook clubs als Young Boys, FC Kopenhagen en Galatasaray loten.
De play-offs van de Champions League worden gespeeld op 22 en 23 augustus en op 29 en 30 augustus. Op 31 augustus vindt de loting voor de groepsfase plaats.
