Mirror concert accident: injured Hong Kong dancer Mo Lee has ‘woken up’ and needs ‘everyone’s prayers and encouragement’, father says

A dancer critically injured more than 10 days ago at a concert of Hong Kong boy band Mirror has regained consciousness, according to his father, who is urging supporters to pray for the performer’s recovery.

Pastor Derek Li Shing-lam on Sunday said his son Mo Lee Kai-yin, 27, was able to have some simple communication with people following two major operations and that the accident, in which a giant video screen had crashed onto the stage hitting performers, had dealt his family a blow emotionally.

“Kai-yin has woken up … and needs everyone’s prayers and encouragement so that he will recover as soon as possible with God’s grace and possibly return to the stage,” Li said.

He also called for prayers for two other hurt dancers – Chang Tsz-fung and Zisac Law Tak-chi – and people left traumatised by the accident.

Lee had been a key performer of the Canto-pop boy band’s dance crew, having appeared in many of 12-member Mirror’s shows and music videos.

He remains in intensive care at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and is in danger of becoming paralysed from the neck down after the four-by-four-metre screen impacted the third and fourth section of his cervical vertebrae, the Post learned. His head and lungs were also injured.

Following the July 28 accident on the fourth night of an intended series of 12 concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum, Lee has gone through two major operations. He was in an induced coma following surgery last week, according to sources.

“We are thankful for the professional advice and care of the medical team that gave Kai-yin hope during the crisis,” Li said. “Pray for two other dancers, Fung and Zisac, who were also injured at the concert and people who are emotionally affected so that they can get back to their normal lives.”

The pastor and his family had already emigrated to Toronto and urgently flew back to Hong Kong a week ago, obtaining a government exemption to visit Lee in hospital during their compulsory seven-day quarantine.

On Sunday morning, a prayer meeting was held at Siu Lek Yuen Evangelical Centre in Sha Tin, where Lee grew up.

His father called on an interdepartmental task force investigating the accident to propose measures for greater safety at performances.

Task force experts returned to the Coliseum on Sunday morning after revealing on Friday that a wire used to suspend the giant screen showed signs of metal fatigue.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department is leading the investigation.

Mirror dancer Lee Kai Yin, who was severely injured when a giant LED screen fell on him during a concert by the popular boy band on July 28, has spoken for the first time after being taken off the ventilator.

The dancer-choreographer, also known affectionately as Ah Mo, has been in intensive care since the accident and has undergone a number of operations.

However, his prognosis remains poor and he is reportedly likely to be paralysed from the neck down.

His father, Derek Li, a Baptist pastor who migrated to Canada with his wife, has been providing updates via social media since their return to Hong Kong to take care of their son.

In a post last Saturday, he revealed that his son had been taken off the critical list and was now listed as serious.

Speaking through his father, the 27-year-old said: “I have accepted that I will have to undergo treatment in hospital for a very long time and I will face the future calmly.”

The pastor also asked for continued prayers for his son as he still faces daunting challenges on his road to recovery.

The task force investigating the accident revealed last month that several factors were to blame, such as the use of a substandard wire cord, a weight error involving the screen, an incorrectly installed rope guard and a snapped screw.

According to an insider, who spoke to Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post, the declared weight of the LED screen was less than half of the actual 500kg. – The Straits Times/Asia News Network

"Despite being severely injured, [Mo] can leave the intensive care unit and no longer relies on a breathing apparatus," Li said.

Li said the neck brace Mo has been wearing is to support his cervical vertebrae.

"Although he can breathe by himself, he cannot control his coughing [after intubation] and surveillance is needed," Li said.

"And if he chokes when eating, it would be dangerous as it may cause lung inflammation."

Li said his son has a busy treatment schedule.

Mo's girlfriend, Natalie So Tsz-ching, shared a friend's post on her Instagram.

"No one would like to be mentioned every day for no reason. I only want to thank my friends who accompanied me in the past two months," she said.

So, popularly known as So Ching from the girl group Collar, has been helping take care of Lee since the horrible accident.

A giant screen fell to the stage during boy band Mirror's concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum on July 28, critically injuring Mo. Two other dancers were also hurt and hospitalized.

The injury leaves Mo at risk of being paralyzed from the neck down. Doctors have put his chances of a full recovery from the spinal injury at just 5 percent.

So also said she misses her boyfriend so much and that she wears his clothes every day, and that Mo once lost his temper with her.

"She has been trying her best to face every challenge, no matter how she feels - stressed and exhausted," So's friend said. "She takes care of everything Mo needs and has been accompanying him silently during the hard times."

The friend also called for a "reasonable explanation" of the incident and pushed for protection of dancers' safety and labor rights.
