In 1949, when the fighting was over, 150,000 still remained. Now the Arab exodus began on 30 November: the Arabs who left then were in no way refugees - they were emigres who left of their own volition.
But never mind, let’s ignore that. Let’s imagone that every single Arab who left was a refugee.
That still makes 450,000 Arab refugees, right?
No, wrong. In 1950, UNRWA officially recognised 1,100,000 Arab refugees. (The appellation “Palestinian” hadn’t yet been invented.)

Fero’s uncle, however, said his nephew was still alive and connected to a ventilator when he was taken. “They disconnected him from the machines and tossed him into a car,” he told the Kan public radio Wednesday morning.
Fero was not a soldier, but a 12th grader at a school in the Druze town.
The body is being held in the Jenin Refugee Camp, Haaretz reported, citing several Palestinian sources.
A senior Palestinian official told Haaretz that the suspects snatched the body, thinking Fero was an undercover Israeli soldier.

Lichaam is inmiddels terug nadat Isral met de Palestijnse Autoriteit heeft onderhandeld. Aanvankelijk werd er vanuit Jenin geist dat er Palestijnse gevangenen geruild werden voor het lichaam maar de Autoriteit vond de puinzooi zelf ook behoorlijk gnant worden en heeft het zonder meer teruggegeven aan de familie.

However, she stated that the Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees is not designed to address all of the difficulties and hardships suffered by hundreds of millions of people in developing countries. A threshold of some kind is required as sufficient grounds for persecution to provide a basis for refugee status, Shaked stated.
The minister made it clear that she condemns all forms of female genital mutilation but said that it was not reasonable for Israel to recognize all forms of a cultural practice with an impact on hundreds of millions of people as grounds for refugee status in Israel.
As a matter of principle, female genital mutilation is not one specific practice, she wrote. There are a number of different forms of the practice, and they need to be distinguished from one another, she said.
In practice, Shaked stated, some of them are similar or milder than ceremonial male circumcision. Only a portion of them have the potential to inflict sufficient serious harm that could be considered persecution.
Shaked’s decision states that there is a worrying trend in the Western world that seeks to blur any distinctions among various female genital mutilation practices and that also draws a parallel between female and male circumcision to ban Jews from practicing male ritual circumcision.
Israel signed the Geneva convention on refugees, but it was never ratified by the Knesset. In addition, the Israeli law on entry into the country explicitly states that those who enter Israel illegally should be expelled as quickly as possible. It is therefore argued that the interior minister should construe Israel’s obligations narrowly.
The Hotline for Refugees and Migrants condemned Shaked’s decision and said it was “shameful” that she would consider the decision the basis for what the organization claimed was “a final round of public relations before she leaves the ministry.”
In the specific case before the committee, Shaked stated that the committee was mistaken because it based its decision primarily on the high proportion of females in the West African country of Sierra Leone who are circumcised, mostly as children.
The practice has wide support in the country, Shaked claimed, and there is greater support for it among women than men, including women who have undergone it. In any event, she said, it would be unlikely that a woman seeking asylum in Israel from Sierra Leone would be forced to undergo it in her home country.

Border Police officer stabbed, wounded in West Bank; Palestinian attacker shot dead
After stabbing, suspect tussles with officer and tries to grab his gun before being shot at close range, the 9th Palestinian to be killed in West Bank violence in last four days
A Palestinian man stabbed and wounded a Border Police officer in the northern West Bank town of Hawara on Friday, before being shot dead by Israeli forces, police and medics said.
Border Police said in a statement that a team of officers was operating in the flashpoint Palestinian town when the suspect pulled a knife and managed to stab one of the officers, lightly injuring him.
Other officers then “neutralized” the attacker, the statement said.
Footage posted to social media showed a Border Police officer trying to apprehend the suspect as two other Palestinians were trying to pull him free.
An officer managed to pull the alleged stabber away from them in a headlock, but the suspect then briefly freed himself from his grasp and appeared to try and grab the officer’s automatic weapon.
The officer then allowed the weapon to fall to the ground as he pulled a handgun from a holster and fired four times point-blank, killing the suspect. He then retrieved his automatic weapon and appears to call for backup before the video clip ends.
Border Police said that the officer with stab wounds was subsequently evacuated for medical treatment, as was the officer who subdued the attacker. Both were lightly wounded.
Hawara is a frequent flashpoint with a highway running through the town being a main route for settlers traveling in the northern West Bank.
A later police statement said that the incident started when the Palestinian tried to enter a vehicle with an Israeli couple in. While trying to break through the locked door, one of the occupants — an off-duty IDF officer — shot and apparently wounded the man with his handgun.
The attacker then ran at a nearby Border Police officer and stabbed him.
The dead attacker was not immediately identified, but he was the ninth Palestinian killed in West Bank violence in less than four days.

Netanyahu heeft trouwens wel meteen een gebaar gemaakt naar de Arabische gemeenschappen van 30 miljard NS. Verrassend positief en tegelijk een politieke lange neus omdat hij precies hetzelfde gebaar vanuit het vorige kabinet vanuit de oppositie torpedeerde.
