Bronquote:Ukraine: Public to Choose Eurovision 2023 Jurors
UA:PBC, the Ukrainian national broadcaster, has announced that the public will be able to choose the Ukrainian jurors for Eurovision 2023. From next year, any member of the public will be able to nominate themselves as a member of the Ukrainian jury for the Eurovision Song Contest. Mykola Chernotytskyi, chairman of the board of UA:PBC, explained the process:
“The public has expressed dissatisfaction with this year’s jury. From next year, we will launch an open call for jury members. All citizens who wish will be able to offer their candidacy, which, in their opinion, shows experience in this area. We will vote on the website and agree on the candidacies with the EBU. In the end, a professional jury will be formed to vote for the Eurovision finalists next year.”
According to Mykola Chernotytskyi, it was difficult to form a team during the war. No one influenced the choice of jury members, judges were chosen based on their experience.
This year’s jury vote caused a great deal of outrage on Ukrainian social media. Ukrainian social media users did not like the fact that the national jury did not give points to Poland and Lithuania. Hateful comments even reached Kateryna Pavlenko, who was this year’s Ukrainian spokesperson and who had nothing to do with the jury’s decision.
Vadym Lysytsia, chairperson of the Ukrainian jury for Eurovision 2022, apologised to the Polish people at an online press conference. Mykola Chernotytskyi added that as the head of the UA:PBC he was sorry that Poland did not receive high scores, but as an official he had no right to interfere in the work of the jury.
